Obama Administration Codifies US-Cuba Moves: How about Third Cousins?

user-pic

The Obama administration today lightened travel and remittance restrictions for US-based relatives of Cuban citizens residing in Cuba.

The limit on relatives is noted at "second cousins."

Hooray! -- not.

OK -- it's some progress. But this is progress that the Cuban-American right wing wanted.

What I and other sensible national security strategists wanted was for President Obama to stand by his moral and ethical fiber that engagement is good, that people to people exchange makes sense, that the Cold War is over, and show some understanding today that Cuba is exporting not revolution and arms today -- but doctors.

I remember very well during the height of the Cold War how my father -- who was a US Air Force service man -- used to comment on all the things that the Soviet Union would do to constrain and control the lives of its citizens.

I remember well how he said everyone was required to carry "their papers" and how they couldn't travel without government permission.

It is outrageous and simply unacceptable that Barack Obama, the first ethnic mix of any sort who wonderfully defies categorization residing in the White House, is creating a class of opportunity and privilege for one class of ethnic Americans and perpetuating an anti-American, anti-human rights restriction by the US government on the movement of non-qualified US citizens.

The travel restrictions on Americans have always been wrong -- and have been more consistent with a totalitarian, Communist government than they have been with a traditional American democracy.

Obama and his team should find a way to step back and realize that while they have made progress on Cuba -- this is embarrassing progress, ridiculous progress -- that is anti-American in spirit and at its core.

Come on, punishing people for wanting to be free from Uncle Sam's hug is as American as apple pie. Probably more so.

Look at the bright side. Obama doesn't plan to invade Cuba.

you know we Americans are punished too by this Cuba policy. It is our freedom to travel, to visit, to see that is impinged by such an authoritarian policy. Obama is so good at the finesse, you not only do not think about change, but he has people talking about it as if change was now or had ever been any part of his agenda.

user-pic

Well, I did hear change was part of his election message. Whether it is part of his agenda is something future historians will tell us after reading his secret communication. Whether change will take place we are learning every day.

Sorry, but I can't stand hearing about "American values" that are honored only in the breach.

Here just below another one harps about "free trade". The US is one of the biggest subsider of its exports. Government procurement is almost sealed from foreign competition, while there is a whole government agency for helping American companies penetrate foreign markets. Punitive tarifs are imposed on a whim, whenever it is convenient, and well connected local industries are fiercely defended from competition. And still ignorant Americans believe their country stands for "free trade" (which by the way I am against but that is another issue) apart from some exceptions like Cuba.

What ever happend to free trade???!!!

Cuba has physicians!

Lots of them.

Relatively near to the US.

It is beyond crazy, that :
a) it would be cheaper for me to fly to Cuba to see a doctor, than it would for me to go to a doctor down the street.

b) I am not allowed to fly to Cuba to see a doctor because our government doesn't have any fidelity to truely free trade.

Racism > Free Trade

Steve,

That moral and ethical fiber you cite, so clear in campaign speeches, is clearly lacking in way too many of President Obama's actions. On warrantless wiretapping, preventive detention, banking reform, health care reform, war in the Middle East, Cuba and more, the Obama administration is emerging as Bush/Cheney lite, continuing policies that are not only anti-progressive, but anti-constitutional.

The eloquent constitutional scholar in the White House is AWOL when it comes time to translate pretty words into actions.

So let me get this straight - we are not quite 9 months into an Obama administration (which took office during a huge meltdown of the financial sector) - they haven't filled all of their appointments yet (because they have to worry about filibusters), and they're devoting all their resources to fixing the health care crisis - and you're ripping them for not yet having fixed our 40 year old Cuba policy?
