AIPAC Goes To War With Obama Over Award To Former Irish President

user-pic

It reminds me of when your spouse stops talking to you for leaving your shoes in the living room when she's really mad because you forgot your anniversary.

AIPAC is blasting President Obama for presenting a White House freedom medal to Mary Robinson, former Irish President. It claims she is anti-Israel and quotes the late Congressman Tom Lantos (known for championing human rights except when the violator was Israel) as saying she is a bigot.

All this over a medal -- a medal! -- simultaneously being presented to civil rights leader, Joseph Lowery (close friend and supporter of former Representative and pro-Palestinian activist Cynthia McKinney), Bishop Desmond Tutu (long time critic of the occupation) and the great gay rights activist Harvey Milk (a Jew who shunned Judaism).

The administration says that it is honoring Robinson for her human rights work, especially her leadership on women's issues. I guess it never occurred to the White House to scour the record of every White House award recipient to make sure he or she was okay on Israel (or gay marriage, or immigration, or evolution, or choice).

The Jewish right does not apply this standard to themselves.

Binyamin Netanyahu, Malcolm Hoenlein, and Joe Lieberman, among others, heaped praise on Pastor John Hagee last month at a Washington, DC Christians United for Israel confab (Lieberman says Hagee is a modern day Moses). They are utterly indifferent to his vicious anti-Catholicism and gay bashing. In fact, by them, if you are pro-Israel, that's that. End of story. The flip side of that is that those who criticize Israel are rotten people.

Anyway, this is not something about Mary. It is about the fear in certain quarters that Obama is dead serious about pushing hard for an Israeli-Palestinian agreement. And that is good news.

The issue raised by the AIPAC complaint is not entirely specious. I have long hated the idea that a major bridge in the Washington area is named after arch-racist Woodrow Wilson. Those who would defend the naming would say that he is not being honored for his white supremacist views but in spite of them. I don't agree. I wouldn't name a slug after Woodrow Wilson.

But that is not how it works. People are honored for their diplomacy, their acting, their athletic skills without regard to everything they said on other issues. I don't agree with Robinson on Israel but so what. She has a long history as a peace activist and humanitarian She despises the occupation and has little use for Zionism. But that is not what she is being honored for. One is, after all, entitled to like or dislike any country one chooses. Including, in fact, our own.

If AIPAC isn't busy this summer, it might want to investigate what Ty Cobb is doing in the Baseball Hall Of Fame. Sure he was the best baseball player in history but he was also a racist and an anti-semite. Even worse, he probably would be anti-Israel too. Throw the bum out.

Here is the Ha'aretz report and the AIPAC statement.

Meanwhile ADL makes clear its opposition to Obama on Mideast.

AIPAC and the Dynamic Duo Abe Foxman and Alan Dershowtiz have super powers beyond mere mortals. We must bow to them. They can detect any scent of anti-semitism up to five light years away. But their super powers fail in detecting the prejudices in their own hearts.

Time to get out the kryptonite.

Israel should just hold their own medal ceremonies for Human Rights and Dignity.

They don't have time. As soon as an Israeli PM or FM is sworn in, the Israeli police open a corruption file. Isn't that a Bona Fide Occupation Qualification for public office now the Land of the People Who Chose Themselves?

BTW, this who bruhaha only proves that the Irish version of AIPAC is seriously under-performing.

Any chance that ordinary folks, like you and me - might start to question why America needs to listen to screaming, complaining AIPAC, on every issue, on every day, at every hour?

AIPAC is NOT an elected entity - it is LOBBY GROUP!

AIPAC's supporters are just a tiny fraction of the total electorate throughout 50 states

AIPAC holds a massively disproportionate influence in both Houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives, through the giving of 'donations'

AIPAC is bad for Democracy.

Orly Taitz is one of the people behind the birthers against obama. see her in youTube. she is in israel when she did this interview. she is a maldovan a la FM lieberman. she has been reported as saying that arabs should be exterminated.

she has connections to AIPAC and netanyahu. see here and here.

all of this is part of the process of delegitimizing. i have always thought that once obama started to get serious about I-P, the right wing likud and their USA counterparts will come out swinging. there will be more of these types of allegations against obama as the peace process moves from just talk to actual implementation.

I think the Ty Cobb statement got my attention more than anything else. Maybe he was the greatest in the pre-modern era, but certainly not greater than Ted Williams & Willie Mays, and that doesn't even consider pitchers.

AIPAC is another stupid one-issue organization. A medal to a former Irish president is so indirectly related to Israel it makes you think they've lost their mind. And if they're claiming she's an anti-Semite, isn't that usually a matter for the ADL. But then the ADL regularly comments on Israel/foreign policy so the whole thing has become confused. I feel like the ADL was once a reputable organization that was focused on the Klan and Buchananism, kind of like the Jews' NAACP or SPLC, but now they're just a kneejerk defender of anything they perceive to be pro-Israel.

I'm surprised MJ left out that Robinson was UNHCR. I'm sure in the course of her tenure she said something about Gaza or the West Bank that pissed them off. I remember her involvement well from the Kosova operation and she seemed very professional and dedicated to me.

Arrogance in these powerful one issue lobby groups. Did anyone else draw a parallel between the NRA saying it would rate the Sotomayor vote? I'd say that's a pretty pernicious influence on the Congress too, no?

“When you allow somebody with allegiance to other nations to become president, that’s extremely dangerous,” Taitz told Tablet in a phone interview from her car.

"When you allow a lobby group with allegiance to other nations to become disproportionately influential in the US legislature and in determining American foreign policy, that is extremely dangerous."

Which comment do you think is more valid; which is already proven and which alleged situation makes a mockery of democratic institutions and endangers all of us, now?

user-pic

I don't understand your point or the connection.

user-pic

Imagine if she had led a human rights conference attended mostly by white supremacists whose purpose was to espouse the vile hatred of Mexico and Mexicans. Do you think she would have been granted the medal?
