Palin Theories

user-pic

The word most used to describe Palin's press conference yesterday was "breathless". She sped through her little speech like a student with too much Adderal in her system. Last night at a dinner party the theories ranged between two poles. On one side was the thought that the emails about to come out in one of the corruption lawsuits would be truly embarrassing. On the other pole is the theory that her speakers agent has told her how much money she could earn in the next 18 months if she wasn't tied to the Alaska Governor's mansion, and the thought of making a killing while she was still in her Andy Warhol "15 minutes" was too much for her and Todd to pass up.

Either way, despite the hopes of Bill Kristol, the whole resignation speech didn't do her a bit of good. She just seems like one more nutty, impulsive Republican governor. Mitt Romney is enjoying his breakfast this morning.

In watching the governor's speech yesterday you just had to realize that this was a woman who was near hysterical with fear about what was coming down the road. It was very obvious from her inability to stop hyperventilating, her extremely scattered comments, and her inability to actually say why she had not choice but to quit. This, from a woman who was proud of nothing so much as her reputation for not being a quitter.

She quit because not doing so would have caused her far more agony, embarrassment, and problems than quitting did, and that is a huge pile of agony, embarrassment and problems. Nothing short of a pending indictment or revelation of some extremely illegal activity could have done that.

The possibility of earning money on the fried chicken circuit could not possibly have caused the speech we saw.

One long shot possibility is that she got into trouble with some extremely vicious criminal groups, and her and her family were under some grave threats if she didn't resign. But, that is really a long shot.

Sometimes when something looks like, acts like, and sounds like a duck, it really is a duck.

I think the two issues are deeply intertwined. She may have resigned because the recent fundraiser for her defense fund barely netted $100K.

*IF* there is something major coming down the pike - would you really want to leave yourself at the mercy of fund raising to cover defense lawyers? If something comes out like the materials for her home were padded into the Wasilla Sports Complex bill, it should make people even less inclined to fund a defense ... so the war chest needed to be filled *before* indictments.

Her speech's two major themes were lashing out at ethics investigations and lamenting the costs associated with them. I think the reason to resign was indeed to secure money. But the reason money became more attractive than power was due to the need for money for the fight to keep her freedom.

user-pic

I agree, and I'd cast some of it in just a slightly different tone.

Money's always good. She's probably facing a criminal investigation and if she needs money for lawyers, fine. Maybe money can help her chase the ludicrous idea that she could be President as well, especially if she can keep the jailer at bay. Who knows? I hope she runs (Sanford too), it'll be great for Dems for the electorate to be reminded of her. The Talibangelicals may be strong enough to get her the nomination despite the wishes of the party's rationalists. Probably not, but one can't be sure.

user-pic

kgb999, I didn't know she had a legal fundraiser and only got 100K. That is not the amount of money I would have expected for all I hear about how many supporters she has. I wonder if she went on tour, just how many supporters would show up?

That is really well said, thanks. It was interesting how she kept saying/hyperventilating that she'd been thoroughly clear about her explanation and congratulating herself on her own supposed lucidity, when she was talking in circular riddles.

user-pic

I like the plays on "duck", very cute!

user-pic

I'm torn between the two theories. She did seem hysterical and out of control, which could mean she's got some serious trouble ahead--but I picture her as greedy, manipulative, and raring to pounce on the moment in the spotlight, too.

Money speaks volumes to those people. Forget the constituents. They've done their jobs at the voting booths; now they're just so much hamburger.

Either way, she's disgusting and not worthy of the fame and fortune she's bound to receive at the hands of her doting, gullible followers.

Sources say embezzlement scandal, federal indictments may soon break concerning use of Wasilla Sport Complex building materials for Palin's home...

user-pic

That has to be the odds on favorite for being the cause of all of the fear that emanated from Sarah yesterday as she gave that "speech". This is especially true given the widespread corruption that is Alaska politics. Alaskans don't seem to expect anything more from their politicians than that they not steal more than their share. In any case it won't be long at all before we will all know what the real problem was for Sarah.

user-pic

This is a little like the 6 blind men examining the elephant. We don't have the whole story yet, so we can't know what is going on. It is highly unlikely that Miss "I love the limelight" is leaving it for no good reason, and no good reason was given. There are any number of possibilities, maybe even some we haven't thought of yet. Time will tell. I have to admit, it is a little delicious trying to figure it out...sick and twisted, but delicious.

user-pic

The breathless thing is key by the way. Why was she in such a hurry? No time to write a coherent speech?

Something was frightening her.

user-pic

prison stripes?

user-pic

So it would appear...

user-pic

Oh and by the way, I say this with respect: I don't need (1) the editorial management or (20 you either actually linking to William Kristol, or Paul Wolfowitz, or Krauthammer or Douglas Feith or John Bolton, as examples.

In the unlikely even that I wanted to know or their deranged ravings, I could find the material -- the Washington Post under disastrous editorial chief Fred Hiatt runs the delusional material just about every day. This goes for Lyndon LaRouche as well; I am sure he has views on current events, and if I need to be aware of his latest delusions, I can run that down myself as well.

No offense meant; just a suggestion. Thanks and best,

O.T.

user-pic

If you don't need 'em, don't use 'em...some people like bein' able to shoot right to the links rather than havin' to take the time to find 'em on their own...saves time, ya know?

Just sayin'. *((ooooh, I'm gunna miss "Sarah-speak!" It's kinda fun!))*

user-pic

Stilli, I obviously respect your opinion and not everyone may agree with me, and yours may be the better view.

I LOVE LINKS! GREAT! *NOT* to Neocon maniacs, though. Their views are either known or predictable, and as I've been lackadaisically re-reading at the beach Sy Hersch's Chain of Command: From 9/11 to Abu Ghraib I'm reminded of their twisted delusions on every page.

user-pic

None the less, I much prefer links to to big ol' long excerpts...easier to ignore if you want, but there if you want...best of both worlds.

user-pic

I love links, I said that.

user-pic

Andrea Mitchell of NBC has sources telling her Palin is out of politics for good. If that doesn't sound like a skeleton about to pop from the closet, Keith Olbermann is the lovechild of Richard Nixon and Carol Channing.

user-pic

I miss the feeling of relief and happiness over Palin's resignation.

After months of liberal obsession and proclamations that she wasn't even fit to be a governor (let alone the VP), she just gave everyone exactly what they wanted.

Where's the joy?

user-pic

Probably held in reserve, pending the REAL reason why she's leaving.

user-pic

LOL! Your spot-on comment gives me joy, L. ;-)

user-pic

Sarah Palin may have had charisma as a candidate, but she is an idiot.

I don't know whether she really can just not articulate her idea on any given subject, or if she is just unknowledgable about so much.

Her resigning is one of the best things that could happen for the GOP; unfortunately, the GOP may come up with a popular alternative to Obama thereby killing any prospects of a third option for President.

user-pic

Huh? Are you actually suggesting the possibility of a third party candidate winning? If you are, I want some of whatever you're smokin'!

user-pic

I put my bets on an Alaska Independent Party candidate named Todd Palin.

user-pic

Well, I guess you're right. We need a second party before we can have a third party.

user-pic

How many times in the past has a governor who didn't have some sort of legal or medical trouble resign? Excepting any who might have taken another political position.

user-pic

Hmm, I heard breathless but not so much panic. There may be ethics/investigation issues, but I bet there's a book and tv deal in there somewhere.

Palin was never really set up for a major political career. She could spend the next years desperately trying to get qualified and resolve her small-state corruption problems, or she could just move comfortably into what she's really good at--making speeches. I bet she's opted for option #2.

user-pic

Sort of a "Checkers" speech, but one hopes without its inverted predictive value.

user-pic

No cloth coats in Wasilla!

user-pic

Can we please get an early start on sticking the fork in the Mitt Romney talk too? The man was responsible for scores upon scores of layoffs and outsourcing!!

On CalculatedRisk the other day, CR wrote that there has been ZERO (0.00) new jobs added to our economy over the last 10 years. Look at the figure below. With the job losses going on right now, we're sure to lose that additional 1.16 million jobs before December 2009. Let's tie this around Mitt's neck like a lead lifevest. Private Equity sucked the jobs & value out of our businesses by shipping jobs to Bangalore...

Employment Dec 1999: 130.53 million
Employment Jun 2009: 131.69 million

user-pic

Since when did reality affect republican voters? Jeb Bush anyone?

user-pic

Very curious. This is a woman who loves the limelight. I can't help but think of the VF article in which Purdom(?) mused:

It is, at the moment, a party in which the loudest and most singular voices, not burdened by responsibility, wield disproportionate power. She may decide that she does not need office in order to have great influence—any more than Rush Limbaugh does.

He said this before the resignation. Curious, indeed. (Sorry about the quote)

user-pic

Did it remind anyone other than me of Al Franken's "I quit" in the documentary on Air America. of couse, his was a joke; the idea of bailing at that time being preposterous. But not for the Witch of Wasilla.

user-pic

It's the money. If ambition for higher office or to gain sympathy for an embarassing revelation to come she would have played the evang card and said something about praying and God. She's going for the Oprah thing.

user-pic

Deep Thought: Palin's tired of looking at Russia.

user-pic

A supposed presidential “contender” doesn’t do an unscheduled rushed speed-talking gasping discombobulated rambling resignation on a late-Friday news dump holiday weekend unless she has to. And none of the reasons she would have to do so are good. So much for the possible talk show, brilliant political move, etc. theories.

I couldn’t get a handle on it at first and then I realized she sounded panicked. I suspect it’s sorta like the other presidential contender from S.C. “How could it have all gone so bad so quick? Why just yesterday they were kissing my butt.”

I smell indictments.

user-pic

You forget to mention her contract with the WNBA.

See:

http://notionscapital.wordpress.com/2009/07/04/great-decisions-2009/

user-pic

It should come as a relief to all of us that Sarah issued a clarifying statement today, explaining in detail exactly why she resigned yesterday and made such a rushed, near hysterical speech while doing so. Now we can stop speculating, she clearly told us she quit because....oops, phone rang...excuse me.

user-pic

Watch it, she's planning to sue everyone on this thread, including me:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/akmuckraker/huffington-post-blogger-s_b_225817.html

user-pic

I'm guessing the reason lies in the corruption probes. Or some personal trailer-park tragedy. Or she's carrying Bill Kristol's love child. Who knows? But if she's thinking of running for president, she's badly deluded. She'd make George Bush look like Albert Einstein.

user-pic

Sarah Palin is about as qualified to run for POTUS as Donald Duck. Why all the questions about what she might or might not do? Why do so many dance around this obvious truth? She fits the tabloid bill & very little else. Are we in for three & a half years of this nonsense?

user-pic

all these comments about investigations and other shoes dropping may have some merit-- but I think simplest explanations are best.

She was wildly popular when Alaska was flush with money- she could have her cake and eat it too. Now times are tough and she is learning that karma is a bitch. Turns out that all the people she walked on have long memories (the legislature), and with a down economy being Governor was suddenly hard work. To her credit, maybe, she realized that she was in way over her head and there was no way she could finish out her term looking like a successful leader.

For some odd reason, people are lining up to hand her money, so like many a beauty queen before her, she has perfected the art of skipping out for a better gig before the real work begins.

user-pic

I was wonder what it would take to get a change in the headlines?
I like Mike we here neighbors in the Valley he was a very nice guy, way more down to earth then you would think.
Sarah has everyone with there panties in a bunch and after all that it is all about...

user-pic

If she is considered the "best" of what this country has to offer as possible presidential candidates we may as well just throw in the towel, lock up the dogs, and turn off the lights.

She sounded like George W. Bush, bobbing and weaving through those interviews without a clue in the world as to what she was saying and no idea where to insert the period at the end of a sentence.

The bar was lowered in favor of Bush but she showed there was still more space available.

user-pic

JOSH.Please make it easier to post comments with the clips we have to rant about. Thanks!

Who wrote the sp wapo clip?
Is she paying for writers?
Did she ever have these opinions before?
Will the dam break?
Reminds us when gwb grabbed 200 million in 99 and the media acted like this was really a good thing. Never mentioning he was already sold (bought)
