Good Israelis To Max Blumenthal: Obama Must Save Us From Ourselves Plus A New York Rabbi's Racist Screed Against Obama

user-pic

My hero, Max Blumenthal, has a new video.

And this time, instead of racist American Jewish yahoos, he talks to real Israelis in Tel Aviv.

Check it out. I am not saying that these wonderful folks are representative of all Israelis. But they are (1) Israelis (2) not Americans who have just been indoctrinated in hate by their youth group or yeshiva (3) intelligent and (4) not drunk.

Imagine what life is like for these people as their country gallops off toward the crazy xenophobic religious right. We should empathize. After all, we know the feeling well.

On the other hand, here is that vicious racist screed against Obama by a mainstream reform rabbi in New York. Utter filth.

MJ, this whole thing is starting to make me nuts. I know I should learn to ignore it but... come on, all week, most of the posts on this site. These guys walking around Israel with video cameras. Can't we just table this until we get a public healthcare option or something?

Why is it making you nuts? Does the truth disturb you?

RE: "Good Israelis To Max Blumenthal: Obama Must Save Us From Ourselves"

BUT SEE: “Obama Breeds Climate of Hate Against Jews”, By Rabbi Dr. Morton H. Pomerantz, 06/10/09

(EXCERPT) Our new president did not tell a virulent anti-Semite to travel to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington to kill Jews, but he is most certainly creating a climate of hate against us.

It is no coincidence that we are witnessing this level of hatred toward Jews as President Barack Obama positions America against the Jewish state.
Just days ago Obama traveled to Cairo, Egypt. It was his second trip in a short time to visit Muslim countries. He sent a clear message by not visiting Israel.

But this was code.

In Cairo, Obama said things that pose a grave danger to Jews in Israel, in America and everywhere…

$30 BILLION FOR ISRAEL OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS

NO MONEY FOR BULLETPROOF VESTS FOR THE GUARDS AT THE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM!

AND I DON’T GIVE A TINKER'S DAMN THAT THE GUARDS ARE TECHNICALLY EMPLOYED BY THE DANISH-OWNED WACKENHUT* CORP THAT CONTRACTED WITH THE MUSEUM. I ASSUME THAT THE ‘COST SAVINGS’ WERE DIVVIED UP.

*THE EUROPEAN EQUIVALENT OF HALIBURTON/KBR/BLACKWATER!

PS. I DEMAND A CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION OF THE FAILURE TO PROVIDE THE GUARDS WITH BULLETPROOF VESTS!

Yes, thanks Max. I would like to see even more extensive interviews with some of these occupation protesters (and Uri Avnery- get him here!).
Still, as the demonstrators point out (kinda the point of the video), the "racist American Jewish yahoos" are more representative of Israeli society at this time, whereas the protesters are a tiny minority.

The Tel Aviv interviews present a polite alternative to the insults featured from drunken yahoos in Max's earlier video. So we can get a little sampling of the political spectrum on these issues. Thank you, Max, for placing your lens on the gentler side of Israeli opinions. And thanks for the update, MJ.

But MJ, your last sentence in this post is quite puzzling. Surely you are writing facetiously when you refer to Rabbi Pomerantz's statements as "utter filth," and a "vicious racist screed."

For instance: Dr. Pomerantz says this:
"Let’s start with the Israeli Arabs who can claim one of the highest standards of living in the Arab world. Indeed, they have more rights than Arabs in any Muslim country, their religious freedom is completely protected, and they even vote in free elections.

"Tell me what Muslim country matches Israel’s record in protecting its minorities?

"Even Arabs in the West Bank, during the time of Israeli control, saw their standard of living rise dramatically. Today, Arabs there are among the best educated in the world, thanks to Israel."

What about this?
Memo: Sounds to me like a point worthy of our talking.

"Today, Arabs there are among the best educated in the world, thanks to Israel.""

I got a rather different impression of Israel's role in that when I read Sari Nusseibeh's book a year ago.

And the rabbi's piece was ridiculously one-sided. Forget the I/P conflict. If you're going to drag in the 14 centuries of conflict between Islam and Christianity, as the good rabbi does, then have the decency to recognize that both sides were guilty of aggression and don't tell lies. Christians were busy persecuting each other and also the Jews (I say this as a believing Christian) before Mohammad even existed--yes, Islam conquered much of what was previously Christian territory, but Christians by their record before and after showed they'd have done the same thing if they'd had the ability to do so. And in the First Crusade, when the Crusaders took Jerusalem they slaughtered the Jews living there--which is odd, since the good rabbi tells us that the Muslim conquest forced people to convert or die. How were there any Jews present for the Crusaders to slaughter if the rabbi told the truth?

I don't quite get why a rabbi is whitewashing the record of medieval Christianity this way, unless it is part of a cynical political desire to unite Christians and Jews against the Muslims. Of course there is also the possibility that he doesn't know what he is talking about, but I doubt that--I think he's lying.

user-pic

Of course, the claim is silly. Even blacks under Jim Crow were mostly better educated than most blacks in Africa, so--to follow the logic--I guess they had nothing to complain about.

user-pic

"Indeed they have more rights than Arabs in any Muslim country..."

One observation: some Muslim countries are actually democratic, and if, say, Turkey or Lebanon are not ``perfect democracies'', neither is Israel.

Second observation: Arabs are actually discriminated against in Israel, and a number of rights in Israel is specifically tied to ethnicity and religion. You want to buy/lease property, or bring a spouse from abroad, your religion will determine if you can.

Third observation: right now, there is a major effort in Israel to increase the discrimination and remove a number of minority rights. But there is always Sudan to compare with -- bigotry of low expectations, or simply, bigotry?

I didn't find Rabbi Pomerantz's comments on Obama the least bit racist, and I'd like someone who did to point out where they were racist. On the other hand, I found the rabbi's comments to be idiotic and worse, he actually blamed Obama for the shooter's assault on the Holocaust Museum.

Here's what the rabbi said: "Obama’s clever construct comparing the mass genocide of six million Jews to the Palestinian struggle will not be lost on the estimated 100 million Muslims who tuned into to hear him.
"Perhaps it was not lost on James W. von Brunn, the 88-year-old white supremacist identified as the alleged attacker Wednesday at the Holocaust Museum. He apparently felt that he could easily take retribution against the Jews for the atrocities Obama implies they are guilty of."

If this idiot were my rabbi, I'd quit the congregation and demand back my contribution to the building fund.
