TPMCafe Chat Room

user-pic

A few days ago I spoke with a group of TPM regulars about the possibility of opening one or more chat rooms at TPMCafe for more real time discussions. An update after the jump ...

Andrew Golis and I discussed this today. And it actually builds on a project we're already at work on -- which is to build a live chat room that people use when we're covering live events. So like if there's a State of the Union address or some similar event we're covering you'd be able to discuss it in real time in a chat room at TPM.

The question came up about chat rooms at TPMCafe because very TPMCafe denizens at different points have set up TPM-aholic chat rooms off site. So, we thought, why not just have them at the site.

So here's where we are. We most likely are going to do this. But it'll probably be a good six weeks or so until we get it set up. The reason it'll take a while is because we're building a system in which you'll enter the chat room using your TPMCafe username and password. We're doing it this way because we think having 'stable identities' will keep the quality of the discussions high, limit disruption by drive by trolls and keep things in line since you'll be in the chat room with your existing TPM identity.

Anyway, that's where we are right now. The plans are still tentative; it's not set in stone. But I think we will do it as I've described. Please let us know in this thread whether this sounds like a good approach, what suggestions you might have or anything else you want to share.

Josh -- I really hope you do this, as it would simplify access. For example, is the current off-site chatroom Mibbet? Mebbit?? You see the problem. It would be lovely to have an in-house link.
Thanks.

user-pic

Speaking of in-house links... How about a special Red Phone Hotline in the Chat Room, direct to Josh? But we'd have to swear to only use it when we were really pissed off.

I'm sure Al would be happy to staff it when Josh needed sleep, and on weekends.

Oh yeah. And a no hitting rule.

user-pic

If you cannot hit, what the hell is the purpose of it? Hell I can just email to myself anyway.

user-pic

What is a "hitting" rule?

user-pic

Oh Belle, Q was making one of his strange metaphors. You know, when you put little tots in a room together, there is a 'no-hit' rule.

I think he is suffering from childhood trauma. I could see where he was hit all the time. hahahahaha

This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.children health

I do agree with all the ideas you have presented in your post. They’re very convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are very short for starters. Could you please extend them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.by healthy families and child health plus

What you've done is interesting. I'm sure the TPM addicts will love the new progress. A love couch for the addicts too, perhaps?

user-pic

Wonderful, Josh! Not only is it good idea. It builds on your already established user base. It's great to see you're paying attention to those paying attention to your site: Your TPM addicts!

Thank you for that! :-)

A chat room is certainly a welcome addition, if time-leeching. Are you still planning to have it open for events only, or at all times? (Add one vote for latter.)

A few points in no particular order:

* Using existing logins is the best option, go with that at all costs.

* Do the simplest thing possible: it is much better than the non-working fancy version.

* If at all possible, avoid Flash and Java (in that order of avoidance.)

* Try to ensure that the solution works for Linux-, BSD- and other UNIXy users. Standard web stuff is the simplest way to achieve this.

* Provide more than one channel or "room" but, say, a maximum of 5 or so. No private channels.

* Have bells & whistles like graphical emoticons etc., but for accessibility and convenience provide a plaintext option/setting (link detection and so on are still OK.)

* Seriously consider leaving out anything like inline picture display, sound file autoplay etc.

* Provide channel logs, in a daily blog post for example.

One -- possibly strange -- option would be to actually just run a private IRC server (also allowing e.g. Mibbit connections from the Web.)

user-pic

Karl, the initial idea was to have it just for live events. But we're now tentatively planning to have permanent room/s that would be at TPMCafe.

user-pic

Karl, why do you hate sound? One of the best parts of my visits to chat have been the music, some really, really interesting music.

user-pic

It wastes bandwidth and means a more elaborate implementation is needed because people have to be able to turn it off, control the volume etc. (having people forcibly listen to whatever is sent to the channel is not an option.)

If someone wants to share music, a video or a picture, they can provide a link that interested parties can then open. This way should allow everyone to follow their preference with minimum hassle to others. The links will of course also be there for posterity.

user-pic

Ack! (Thunk) It wasn't a dream? I hope Andrew is feeling better.

Hmmm, I think you gleaned the most important parts.

aside from that...

The extra goodies like easily linking youtubes and pics would be very nice, but I understand if there are bandwidth issues...

Oh! and free movie tickets and popcorn. Maybe an open bar.... (yeah, dream on)

Oh, and the ability to personal message and ignore in chat would be nice, too. I think you said those were problematic though?

Here's mibbet, if people want to play and collect thoughts:

Josh this is Good. OK? I wish we'd had it today when i was throwing up during the speech after Obama's.

BTW. Thanks already for what we have had here. kept me sane during a lot of scary times.

Best.

Easiest solution: IRC

Coolest solution: comment system with AJAX auto-refresh

user-pic

GREAT idea! I'm one of those who frequently visit the off-site chat room, and would love to have it here!

Private messaging would be a must!

Thanks for even considering it!

user-pic

Mostly, it's important that we be allowed to wear hats in there.

For God's sake man, where is your humanity?

user-pic

Josh,

Additionally, it would be nice to have easier access to popular blogger/reader posts, especially when the themes go beyond news of the day.

Maybe in addition to "Recent Archives" and "All Reader Posts" we could have links to recent highly recommended/commented on posts.

If they are easy for everybody to find than digging through the archives, popular conversations can continue after they are knocked off the front page by more recent posts (blogger section) or a brief lapse in recent recommends (reader posts section).

In addition to extending conversations, this would allow readers to extend research efforts and possibly even lead to new muckraking story breaks.

user-pic

This would be real nice, I love the full contact blog. Can we use our cam and have a table or maybe a bar layout so we can see what some of our pals really look like?

user-pic

The offsite chat room. So that's where the conspiracies take place. (o;

user-pic

If I may say, and tech+finances permitting, it would be nice to have a weekend-only chat room - dedicated to other things besides the usual wonkish-cum-insightful snark. That could be the TPM weekend/movies/games/you-know-that-thing-called-real-life section (basically, it would help me cope with my weekend TPM-removal syndrom).

Be prepared to face the worst of the worst right wingers in this chat room. I used to frequent an AOL created chat room called From the Left and it attracted the most hateful, close minded wingnuts one could imagine. One of their tactics was to send a TOS to AOL concerning a liberal they didn't like, then the liberal would lose AOL access. By the way, AOL's TOS committee was in India and you had to deal with them.

I eventually started my own chat room on AOL called From the Left, and doing this gave me control over those who came in. As the creator of the room, AOL armed me with a Lightning Bolt that I could use to expel from the room anyone who was too off the wall/disruptive. I allowed sensible debate by rational people on both sides, but the hateful, mindless, Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage types never lasted long before getting Bolted.

I would frequent a TPM Chat Room as long as it stayed relatively civil.

user-pic

I'd say a bunch of chat rooms, probably with links from different articles or different sections of the site to where the live discussion is going on. In addition to maintaining civility and non-tolling, the trick will be maintaining something sorta like a manageable number of things being talked about simultaneously (says the guy with two or three dozen browser tabs)

user-pic

I just need directions to the chat room opening night, pleeze.

{{{Wagging tail sends modem and router flying}}}

Cheezeburgers would be a bonuz, but obviously not required.

{{{USB hub joins modem and router}}}

Thank you and Al. Licks faces.

Anxiously awaiting a chat feature!
