Noted at "the Crossroads of History"

1. When was the last time a president said that universities were part of the solution?

2. Republicans sit on their hands as Obama chastises government's having lined the pockets of the rich.

3. Good fact: 55 police are on the streets tonight in Minneapolis because the stimulus averted their layoffs. We could use more of that.

4. Republicans do rise to cheer entrepreneurs.

5. They're slower to rise to applaud Obama's dig at companies investing public funds in private jets for their CEOs.

6. "In a time of crisis, we cannot afford to govern out of anger." "It's not about helping banks, it's about helping people."

7. The economy will recover "slowly but surely."

8. "Reform our outdated and outworn regulatory system." Republicans rise for that. What have they been waiting for?

9. "Government...catalyzed private enterprise." Sounds like socialism to me.

10. Three crucial areas: energy, health care, education.

11. Reinvent the automobile. (And a nod to "clean coal.")

12. "This is America. We don't do what's easy. We do what's necessary to move this country forward." We'll see.

13. Sen. Lugar ekes out a few perfunctory claps for "quality, affordable health care for every American," but the Republicans don't seem to think they can afford to stay in their seats as Obama declares that health care shouldn't be postponed.

14. Pelosi doesn't applaud for charter schools.

15. Quitting high school is "not just quitting on yourself, it's quitting on your country."

16. Service will get you a college education.

17. He's identified $2 trillion worth of programs that can be cut over the next decade. That's a lot. Among them: no-bid contracts; "reform our defense budget" (not much cheering for that); end Medicare abuse; end tax breaks for corporations that shift jobs overseas; end tax breaks for the wealthiest two percent; a tax cut for 95 percent of working families.

18. Comprehensive health care reform helps save Medicare.

19. Tax-free funds for everyone--not clear to me what he means.

20. "No longer will we hide" the price of war.

21. "Living our values...makes us stronger....The United States of America does not torture."

22. "A new era of engagement has begun." That means diplomacy and alliances. "All elements of our national power." That means force in its place, and not beyond its place.

23. "Build common ground." His peroration remains "post-partisan." He consolidates the esteem in which he is held.

I still can't quite believe that we have a professor-in-chief. He gives a plain speaking style an excellent name. The tonal difference between the president's speech and that of Bobby Jindal is rather shocking in that respect.

my biggest hope for obama's term in office is that he re-shapes americans' conception of 'presidential'. we are in desperate need of seeing underachieving anti-intellectual low-brow bullies as decidedly unfit to be president ever again. if obama can deliver on effective policy (something i am unconcinvinced of) he can be the guy to help us get over our battered spouse syndrome.

Obama's problem is going to come when he tries to actually cut the budget of those two trillion dollars. For instance, cutting out that warplane that doesn't work is going to be portrayed as eliminating 100,000 jobs. Every item in there has a constituent senator or congressman that is going to resist. A program that is wasteful but is in someone's district is going to unite a whole lot of opposition. The Dems are just as bad as the repugnant ones in this regard.
