Not an Academic Question
David has with unerring professorial precision raised a question that I think is at the heart of the Bush presidency: to what extent was Cheney reflecting Bush's wishes? The opening scene of Angler, where Cheney colludes with Bush to create the appearance of a true search for a vice-presidential nominee suggests, I think, that Bush didn't have any illusions about Cheney. To what degree was Cheney simply Bush's errand boy as opposed to an independent actor?

I've always disagreed with people who claimed that Bush was stupid. I've always felt they were wrong, he wasn't stupid, what people were mistaking for stupidity was Bush's not caring how people outside his social circle suffered as he pushed his ideology, and Bush met his soul mate in Cheney.
Many Republicans are now saying Bush/Cheney made "mistakes". This is just Republicans trying to ameliorate willful actions by the Bush gang. I can guarantee you, Bush/Cheney don't see anything they did as "mistakes."
Oh, one other thing, modern day Republicans didn't "lose their way", they did exactly what they wanted to do.
