The Liberty Bell was known as the "Independence Bell" or the "Old Yankee's Bell" until 1837, when it was adopted by the American Anti-Slavery Society as a symbol of the abolitionist movement.
During the 19th century, the bell tolled at the death of Alexander Hamilton (1804), Lafayette's return to Philadelphia (1824), the deaths of Adams and Jefferson (1826), Washington's 100th birthday celebration (1832) and the deaths of Lafayette (1834), John Marshall (1835) and William Henry Harrison (1841).
The inscription on the Liberty Bell reads as follows: "And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof."The source of the inscription is Leviticus 25:10, which reads "And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family."
The world needs this as much as we do. We're taking back Democracy today. The world hesitates.
I recall a story related by Madeleine Albright that a senior European diplomat once told her that Europe was not mad at America for electing George W Bush; it was mad that we re-elected him.
Don't get too excited, the polls in 2000 and 2004 had the Peruvian Shaman vote going big time for Gore and Kerry.
Also, too.....The video's a little shakey, but I swear that was David Freddoso and Andy Martin, known in Peru as Jose the Shaman, doing their magic on behalf of McCain.
Hugo Chavez doesn't hate America, he hates Bush. Saddam Hussein didn't hate America, he hated the Bush family.
Chuch bells will ring around the world when we relegate that family and anyone connected to them, like McCain, to the dust bin of History by electing Obama.
I was born and raised in Northern Ireland.
I moved to England when I was 24 (2 years ago).
I've never been to America.
I booked today and tomorrow off work, so that I could sit glued to TPM, BBC News and CNN for 48 hours. I just wouldn't have been able to concentrate until I know how this thing goes, one way or the other.
To say that this election is the most significant in a generation is an understatement.
DrRaoul,
I slipped into Belfast, Ireland, on the USAT James Parker, January 9, 1944. We eventually moved to Nottingham, England, and stayed there till D-Day morning.
We seem to have moved around similarly. :-)
Agreed, this is a significant election, will we continue to be a rogue country or rejoin the community of Nations. The Bush/Cheney gang did serious damage to this country, internally and externally, and the sooner we set out to repair it the better.
By the way, I'll never forgive Tony Blair or Colin Powell, among others, for enabling the Bush gang.
JohnW1141,
To read the thoughts of a veteran of WW2 is truly humbling. My grandparents often spoke of the GIs that passed through Belfast in those days, and had a great respect and admiration for your nation's armed forces. This election surely means much more to yourself than to many of us.
It is this same respect and admiration of America, passed down to us from our parents and grandparents, that makes the last 8 years all the harder to stomach.
I grew up in a deeply divided society. I'll spare you a history lesson on the Northern Ireland troubles, but it was ultimately Bill Clinton who got our 2 communities to sit down together, with the common goal of consigning violence and inequality to the past. Tens of thousands of people lining the streets of Derry and Belfast, Catholic and Protestant, to listen to Clinton speak is something I and my countrymen will never forget. He sowed the seeds of peace in our nation.
This is why I have such an interest in US politics. My country will always have a special relationship with yours. Through the good times and the bad.
The day of the first debate between McCain and Obama, I was running through the streets of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia trying to get back to my hotel in time to see it. I would normally have taken a cab, but it was only about 5 blocks and I could not find a cab anywhere. As I arrived at the hotel, I noticed that the usual 6 or 7 cabs that line up in front were not there either. When I asked the doorman at the Sheraton where everone was, he informed me the entire city was watching the debate. That was the day I knew this was "other world" stuff!
So, 8 out of 10 shamans in Peru prefer Barack Obama? Sounds like these guys half a world away have a better grip on the state of their part of the world than the good citizens of several of our (mostly southern) states.
Our solid blue west coast, the beautiful upper midwest, several mountain states and upper east coast are going to do the job for the man of the year, man of the century. C'mon Florida!
I don't know any other demographic where BHO leads by 60% but these men have it nailed. Gobama!

"Peruvian Shaman Vex Voodoo Economics" ?
Geez... Are the stars ALL in alignment? Are the crystals vibrating to the Age of Aquarius? Do we ALL feel good now?
You folks are ridiculous.
Enjoy it. In 70 some odd days, Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Franks/Rangle will be accountable. Except for Obama, they've all been there before... and tossed out because of corruption. Yessiree, real change... back to the corrupt Democratic party of old!
Better than the old corrupt Republican Party
Who when they come to power, ALWAYS, always rob the treasury.
We The People are tired of BORROW AND SPEND aka STEAL AND SPEND
Why do you think they lost to FDR and it took 40 or more years to regain control again? How about NIXON and Watergate?
Hypocritical, Liars and Crooks all of them including Democrats,
no doubt at all the whole world is watching this one and that bells will be ringing all over the world when Barack Obama wins.
We are stepping back from a precipice.
