A Wonderful Story About Early Obama Voters in Ohio

user-pic

I'm not going to paraphrase this. If you are interested in having the cockles of your heart (whatever those are) warmed, read this.

It is a great story.

So great in fact, that minus the details of the jacket and the Jewish ladies, I heard the exact same thing a week ago, particularly:

NASCAR fan went into polling booth with intention of voting McCain, but changed his mind because he wanted to be able to someday tell his grandchildren that he helped make history by voting the first African-American into office.

The only real difference is that the voter in the story I overheard was from Virginia, not Ohio.

Not to say that in a country as large as ours there can't be two NASCAR fans, who planned to vote McCain, but changed at the last minute for the exact same reason, but the similarities here force me to question the credibility of the article's author. I suppose it's never really a good idea to believe everything you read on the blogs, no?

I suppose it's never really a good idea to believe everything you read on the blogs, no?

Especially ones by MJ Rovenberg :) But never fear, once it's debunked and he looks like an ass for once again putting a silly unfactual arguments or staories out there, the post will magically disappear without a trace.

user-pic

dijamo,

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

user-pic

Rovenberg Jr., zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz when you can't defend the indefensible is pretty sad :) But I'm sure Daddy Rovenberg is beaming with pride that you've learned his non-substantive rebuttal techniques!

user-pic

I just learned, from clever internet sleuthing, that Djamo is not an African American woman but a white guy who posts under an avatar or something. I'm not 100% sure but 90%.

I knew it was too weird that any African-American would be so consistently hostile, not just to Obama but to African-American in general. I thought that just like there are self-hating Jews, there are self-hating African Americans (like Keyes). Well, maybe there are but Djamo isn't one of them.

Very clever. Fool me one, Djamo. Even twice. But no more. I feel like an idiot for falling for her weird game. Racism in this country is so messed up.

user-pic

Care to provide details of your stunning expose to the class Matlock? It took hours of makeup to go to the TPM-Aholics Obama fundraiser to keep up the facade of being an African American woman.

And while you're at it, find any comment that was denigrating Obama as a black man or black people in general. My criticisms are towards race-baiting folks like you who think the only way to understand being black in America is to read the Autobiography of Malcolm X and any black Hillary supporter must be self loathing and not know who Kanye West is. Funny how that thread where you threw those insults my way has been "disappeared" as is your M.O. whenever you get spanked and have no retort except insults.

user-pic

Is MJ joking, DJ?

If not, that last comment of his was TOTALLY weird.

user-pic

Wrong. She's participated in person at a New York City fundraiser for Obama organized by some of the main supporters of Obama on this website:

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/07/july-19-online-qa-and-fundrais.php

There were a multitude of posts on this very site about their little get together after the fact, talking about meeting others, including dijamo. (And another member here that you like to think of as a Hillary supporter, bslev, was there, too, donating to the Obama cause. His union lawyer group, BTW, also held a fundraiser for Obama a month or so ago, one that raised $100K.)

Your reaction to your commenters doesn't reflect too well on the credibility of most of your research. Shows a tendency to like conspiracy theories and to pre-judge people you don't know. The kind of predilection that are not too helpful in the diplomatic field, I hear, especially, I would think Israeli/Palestininan relations. Not so helpful in Congress or as a lobbyist, either.

What's clear from your more frequent comments like this is that you like to label people based on a very few words, don't really try to understand what they are saying, put them in boxes, and don't listen anymore. You decide based on very flimsy background that you have others all figured out. Pretty bad reflection on you, as bad as Krauthammer or any of your other bete noires. Certainly not the qualities of someone supposed to be in the communications or peace-promoting business.

You can't even listen or keep peace on a piddling little blog thread; you show incredible irrational prejudices towards some commenters and not to others, based on the flimsiest of reasons. (You like JohnW114 simply because he fought in the Euro theatre in WWII, apparently.) You respond to legitmate criticism with nasty or flippant insults.

How the hell do you expect anyone trust what you say about the Mideast? From what I've seen of your behavior here for a couple years, looks to me like you might be someone who would blow it to kingdom come simply by opening your mouth.

user-pic

art,

that's all there is to me, being a WWII vet?

user-pic

John,

Absolutely not, I always look for your comments. Was saying that M.J. seems to like you for that and not really for any other reason. Instead of agreeing or disagreeing with the things you say, he tells you things like you're his hero. Has always looked to me like you're a token to him.

user-pic

I haven't really followed much of what MJ Rosenberg has written in the past (I usually just read the entries on EC/Muckraker/talk), but you're absolutely right that his assertion that dijamo is a white guy (based on "clever internet sleuthing") definitely casts aspersions on his ability to do research in general, and "internet sleuthing" in particular.

What next? Has he learned that dijamo's sister Mina is really a Bengal tiger?

(For the record—just to save MJ some time—I really am a white guy.)

user-pic

First, everything artappraiser said. Eloquent and true.

Calling a black woman a self-hater over what she thinks, or a hater of black people (and the provocation was minor, dude) is gross, racist, and illiberal in the extreme. It's not an argument.

user-pic

MJ, so not cool.

As a woman, and a feminist, who supported Obama from the beginning and was subjected to "traitor to my gender" questions in the primary, I know how utterly ridiculous it is to suggest that anybody who looks a certain way fits so neatly into boxes that others like to build for them.

Usually, I enjoy that your posts have a bias that borders on hysteria. I get tired of commentators who play it safe to be accepted in the mainstream.

But if you're going to be incendiary, you have to expect criticism. To launch a completely inappropriate attack on somebody that disagrees with you, no matter how personal that disagreement gets, is just out of line. You're the one with the soapbox here.

We're all on edge these days and emotions have been getting the best of the best of us. I sincerely hope that you'll realize that you crossed the line. An apology is warranted here. Please be big enough to offer it.

user-pic

Beginning to look like an urban legend.

user-pic

BTW, the cockles of your heart are located directly below the mussels.

user-pic

They are what keep you alive, alive-O.

user-pic

Exactly!

user-pic

Quinn - he's a total asshat. No matter what the topic, he throws an insult about how I'm not really black or I am black but am self-loathing. He cannot conceive of anyone black not being totally gaga for Obama. All black people must be exactly alike and only vote for the black candidate. Just like all Jewish people must be exactly alike and only vote for the Jewish candidate. That's why MJ voted Lieberman in the primary instead of Obama.

There is nothing in the world more amusing than a faux enlightened bigoted white person telling a black person they are not black enough. But the funniest thing is that he then goes back and *poof* deletes the thread as if it never happened. He's a cowardly asshat at that.

user-pic

dijamo,

I disagree, I think your obsession with MJ is quite amusing. Are you an obsessive/compulsive?

You have reduced yourself to an MJ Groupie, and I think that's sad.

Ya cudda been a contenduh!

user-pic

Hate to break it to you Rovenberg Jr, but you're the groupie sycophant rushing to defend MJ at every opportunity no matter how asshattishly wrong he is. Hence the nickname I've bestowed upon you :) I comment on the Reader's blogs all the time. I've commented on Rovenberg's posts since February maybe 5 or 6 times. Each time I comment on the substance of the post and he throws personal insults regarding race my way. Who's the one with the obsession? Thanks. Back to brown nosing for you Jr.

user-pic

I don't see you on any other author on TPM, of course that doesn't mean you aren't there, but you seem to appear strictly on MJ's commentary and every time you come here its simply to be critical of MJ.

This reminds me of the Bill Clinton years and the incessant attacks on him by the right wing. As a self defined Liberal, I had my problems with Clinton, but I defended him from the right wing attacks. Its deja vu all over again; I don't always agree with MJ, but I do take his side when I see people like you who come here with what appears to be the sole purpose of attacking him.

Here's a question for you; Do you stay away from MJ's writings when you agree with what he says?

user-pic

Ahhh, there was that one day hell froze over:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/28/obamas_speech_showed_exactly_h/

Or a few actually – there was another post about Obama speaking to AIPAC that I can’t find. And one on Hillary's concession speech too. So sorry, I am not a groupie who just comes into his thread to hurl insults. I have been critical of his unbalanced right wing smear style attacks ont he Clintons and Clinton supporters. And when I do criticize, I tend to go for substance and he goes straight for personal attacks. That's generally a sign that someone is unable to defend their argument.

That said I rarely comment on the Café featured Contributor pages, but since MJ’s been such a sweetheart to me calling me PUMA and throwing racial insults for having the temerity to be critical of him, I pop in every now and then to see just how awful his piece is. And when it's a really crappy post I'll let him know. And will continue to do so in the future unless he is demanding a GWBish criticism free zone in his threads and demonizing those who differ in opinions (another right wing tactic). He of course is welcome to continue the personal attacks and I will continue to remind him what an absolute bigoted ignorant ass he is.

For what it’s worth I gave Theda Skocpol more hell for that white feminists speaking up for Obama piece than I ever did to MJ and for her campaign finance piece, and she never once responded with personal attacks in the vein of MJ. I think they call that professionalism (and disagreeing without being disagreeable.)

And in regard to your comment above for artappraiser, I think they refer to that as poetic justice. It sucks to be pigeonholed into someone’s little box because of one characteristic, no matter how important that one charateristic is to your identity. Perhaps in the future you can learn to think for yourself instead of blindly defending MJ at every criticism and refrain from stereotyping and trying to define other people.

user-pic

dijamo,

here's an example of me thinking for myself, something I just posted on another thread.

"I was watching Obama work a rope line and I saw two elderly black people there, a man and a woman,
who seemed to be elated, and rightfully so,
and I thought to myself; Obama should win if only for people like this, people who suffered because of race all their lives; and now for maybe the first time in their lives, seeing Obama, all the shit they had to live through might be fading into oblivion.

If Obama wins, the day after the election these two people will awaken to a different world than the one they've known all their lives."

AS to your saying:

Perhaps in the future you can learn to think for yourself instead of blindly defending MJ at every criticism and refrain from stereotyping and trying to define other people.

I deny I blindly defend MJ at every criticism, but I do admit to acting like Pavlov's Dog whenever I see you here doing your thing. Check the second post on this thread. Maybe you're as Pavlovian as I am.

But, hey listen, don't feel singled out, I do the same thing on other threads when I see a recurring poster who's mission seems to be only to attack.

By the way, I read only the featured posts, there are only so many hours in a day.

user-pic

Respectfully, this ain't worthy of you, dude.

user-pic

Hey, John - DJ's always on my threads, and that's been for a good half year. I know the "if a tree falls in the woods and I didn't notice it" argument is enticing, but let's just say it quickly unravels if you acknowledge that other people also exist.

And damn, I'd be 100% sure before I outed someone as being a different color or sex or nationality, and frankly, it would have to have some serious relevance to the matter at hand. But just to let you all sleep well, I checked out Dijamo, and she really seems to know who hosted Soul Train, what flavors MadDog comes in and the mechanics of doing the Moonwalk, so on that alone I'd say she's 90% assured of being black.

user-pic

Though she may be transgender - I've got my peeps tracking down all these "assaciousness" comments, and baby's got a little too much back, if you know what I mean. But I'll keep you posted. "Dijamo" is an acrostic for "Mad Joi", and I'm sure you know what that means in club circles.

user-pic

Ooh Ooh! I know this:

1. Don Cornelius
2. This is a toughie. Do I get any lifelines? I'm going to play it safe and go with Grape.
3. Socks, Crisco and a freshly waxed kitchen floor.

Can I get my black card renewed?

Thanks!

xoxo Dijamo

user-pic

#1 Check. #2 My favorite was always grapefruit, so kinda the same. Check. #3 Left out the sliding howling cat, but considering your affinity towards those leetle screeching beasties, Check.

user-pic

Dij; As you know, I don't usually wander the brightly-lit streets of the Cafe up here, but I gotta say I was a bit taken aback by that. That's just weird. Does he mean you had to support Obama during the Primary too?

All I can say, MJ, is (if you weren't joking) maybe think about backing away from that line of witty comeback/insult. I'm a big fan of insults and all, including personal ones, but if you weren't joking... I'd try finding slightly gentler grounds for insult. If it helps, I can tell you my Dad was a Jew, my family worked the Northern end of the Underground Railway, I've worked for and with lefty governments for 20 years now, I've got a huge nose (but am staggeringly handsome nonetheless), I'm a former hockey goon, and I've got family in Arkansas. Just as a tip, you might want to start any insults at the latter end of that chain, and go fairly slow on working your way up to the front.

Wow. Think I'll dive back into the murk of the Readers blogs.

user-pic

Staggeringly handsome, endearingly insane AND modest. Such a rare combination :)

user-pic

Eh, he does it all the time, he's like the token troll on the contributor roster ever since Larry Johnson left (I gotta say, no one could compete with Larry on the insult thing and drawing trolls like flies because of that.) Don't judge all the front pagers by him. Ask bslev, he'll tell ya, he learned the hard way.

user-pic

MJ, this is the only second time since January that I have commented on one of your threads. AA is absolutely correct; I used to eagerly await your posts and I respected what I believed you were trying to do even when I questioned your abrasive approach and sometimes some of your concrete positions. I now know that, with people like you at the helm of progressive Middle East organizations in Washington, it is no wonder that Senator Obama has had no choice but to stake out a Middle East policy portfolio that is no different than those of the AIPACs of the world that you oh so love to hate. Moreover, I submit that, judging by what you have done here, you have absolutely no idea what Senator Obama's campaign is supposed to be all about.

Dijamo, I am truly sorry and embarassed that you have been subjected to one of the most heinous pieces of hate I have ever read at the Cafe. For what it is worth, I met you on July 19th, and you were as lovely in person as you appear in the photograph of yourself that you have selected for your Cafe avatar. And what an example you have set for all posters at the Cafe (including yours truly) by the measured and dignified response to MJ's mean-spirited and filthy attack.

I believe that MJ owes dijamo and the entire Cafe community a sincere and heartfelt apology, and I also believe that, absent apology, it is difficult to understand how management can justify MJ's continued role as a featured contributor on this website.

Very truly yours,

Bruce S. Levine

I believe that MJ owes dijamo and the entire Cafe community a sincere and heartfelt apology, and I also believe that, absent apology, it is difficult to understand how management can justify MJ's continued role as a featured contributor on this website.

Absolutely. Although my impression of dijamo is that his insults will be like water off a duck's back, his accusations are still indefensible.

user-pic

Bruce, your opinion means a lot to me, so I thank you for your comment. MJ's opinion on the other hand means diddly squat. His rants reflect far worse on him than on me which is why this thread will self desturct in 3, 2,... I have no desire to see him gone, but egads some journalistic standards would be nice. If you make an error in a post, don't just make it disappear into the ether. If you have the gall to attack someone personally, don't just delete the thread because you realize it makes you look like an ass. Imagine if the NYT when they made an error repossessed every paper and pretended it never happened. It's a cowardly act.

user-pic

Own up MJ

Don't be a chicken.
