Did Joe Lieberman Endorse McCain Because They Are Both White?

user-pic

Bob Cesca answers the question in his Goddamn Awesome Blog.

While I have you, let me link to Bill Kristol's column today challenging Peggy Noonan's argument that our politics has been vulgarized. (Of course it has but by Peggy's party not ours). Anyway, Kristol doesn't like Noonan because she is a rightwinger who can write and he knows that the Tmes would kill to steal her from the WSJ and dump the embarrassing (for Sulzberger) Kristol.

Anyway, Kristol argues that American politics is no more vulgar than it ever was. And you know what proves it? "Joe Wurzelbacher, a k a Joe the Plumber. He's the latest ordinary American to do a star turn in our vulgar democratic circus. He seems like a sensible man to me." (Indeed. Joe's #1 cause is getting rid of social security!. Right up Kristol's alley. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Bill and Joe are kindred souls in so many ways. I look at Joe, and I just see Kristol and David Brooks and think what great buds they would all be!

MJ, dude! Why bother reading that garbage. Kristol shouldn't get one click.

He's a has been LOSER.

I know. But it's fun commenting on him, knowing that these jerks read everything that is written about them. But you are right (at least, I don't pay for the privilege).

Let's hope the Repubs keeping using Joe the Plumber. He's the archetypical conservative: He's is ignorant and thin-skinned. Notice his pigue at America having to "apologize." We all know a conscience and high moral standards are for sissies.

Yes.
This has been another installment of simple answers to simple questions.

Congratulations Mr. Rosenberg and DrDick. This truly was one of the stupidest questions I have ever seen posed.

Lieberman endorsed McCain long before Obama was even the nominee. In fact, he endorsed McCain before any caucus or primary took place.

Whatever his misguided reasons for endorsing McCain, it was not based on race. Lieberman had plenty of white Democrats to choose from at that point.

But, once again, congratulations.

MJ - can you please stop post racist comments like this?

MiddleClassBill,

what is racist about MJ's comment?

What is it with Plummers and the Republican Party. I guess we can start talking about G. Gordon Liddy. Afterall he was a plummer too!

Many other (white) republicans and coservatives have been endorsing Obama over McCain, and for the same rationales as Powell gave. Powell is the only AA among them. Limbaugh & Will are simply privileged White males who are essentially racist.

On the other hand, I am no fan of Powell, who is a republican suck-up and pretty much wrong on everything since his role (and big political break) in the military attempted My Lai coverup.

TNR, of all places had a good debunking of the Powell mythos a few years ago.

I posted this on the Times web site in response to Kristol's article. Increasingly, it strikes me that that the most offensively dismissive of the elites are those conservatives who assume that all of us ordinary Americans are ignorant rubes like Joe Sixpack and Joe the Plumber. The American people are smarter that. And that's why Obama and Biden are leading in the polls.

Did it ever cross the mind of this champion of the common man that we ordinary people prefer Obama to McCain not because we are misguided but because we see quite clearly that Obama is the better candidate? If Kristol were not the elitist he denies he is, he'd realize that we ordinary people are not all like Joe the Plumber, Joe Sixpack, or other such figments of elite Republican imagination. Some of us are actually well informed. And some of us can see what Kristol from his lofty perch apparently cannot: that Obama demonstrates both greater intelligence and better self-control than McCain and that Palin is not even close to being Biden's equal in knowledge, experience, and readiness to lead.

The common man seems certain to choose Obama-Biden over McCain-Palin. So Kristol is right: there is wisdom among the American populace. But Kristol is not with the American people. He is simultaneously above us in presuming that we share the ignorance of Joe Sixpack and beneath us in adopting that ignorance as his own.

The whole use of terms like "Joe Sixpack" or "Joe The Plumber" are so condescending, so utterly Republican.
So typical of these people.

user-pic

MJ - how about the term "geezer"? Is that condescending? I'm sure you'd never use a word like that...
