Why Does The Right Call Barack "Barry"?

user-pic

Have you noticed that rightists of all stripes (mostly white on white) love to call Obama "Barry." Go to any right wing website. If they are not calling him Hussein, they care calling him "Barry" or "Barry Hussein."

The source for "Barry" is Obama's admission than in high school he used the name Barry because it was more American than Barack. This is a pattern all minorities know well. In college, I knew a guy called "Irving Weiss" (real name). One fall, I returned to school, saw Irv, and called him by his name. He said, "I'm Jim now." And after awhile, that is what we called him.

A person has the right to be called by the name he or she chooses. To call Barack "Barry" is to suggest that he's a fake. He used to be "Barry." Now he's Barack. What is he hiding. It's also a little joke, the very idea of a black guy being called Barry! How pathetic.

Barama supporters of course never refer to him as Barry. We recognize the code.

Names matter.

In Israel last month, Ehud Barak referred to his political adversary Tzipi Livni as "Tzipporah" several times. Now her name is Tziporrah; in fact Tzipi is the nickname for Tziporrah. If anything Tzipporah is the more formal, adult, version of the name.

But everyone knew what Barak was doing. By calling Tzipi by a name she does not use, he was reminding voters that their well-known all-business Tzippi is just a "girl" named Tzipporah.

Feminists in Israel picked up on this immediately and then everyone else did too. The Tzipporah incident helped finish Ehud Barak.

I hope Americans are as sophisticated. If you hear some Republican calling Obama, Barry, understand that he or she are not thinking "Barry," they are thinking, other less acceptable labels coupled with "uppity."

I have been an Obama supporter since he started campaigning in Iowa during the primaries. In correspondence my friends, I often refer to him as Barry. I got this from Wonkette. Perhaps the wingnuts are using it is a disrespectful way (and they probably are, knowing the wingnuts), but that does not mean everyone is.

user-pic

i saw the dinner segment last night; i guess from now on we call him "steve barama."
kinda has an action-figure sound, though...

user-pic

"Barama supporters"?

The reason they call him Barry, his youthful nickname, is the same reason racists call black men "boy", it is a denial of respect, and a refusal to recognize that he is a man and an equal.

user-pic

This is silly. Politicians do not have any kind of inalienable right to be called whatever they want. I have called George Bush, "Georgie", "King George" and "Boy George". I sometimes call John McCain "Gigolo John". I refer to Dick Cheney sometimes as "that asshole".

You are disrespecting and infantilizing Obama with your endless kneejerk suggestions that he needs special protective treatment because he was black. Please stop mothering him, and give him the space to be a normal American politician, loved or respected by his supporters, mocked and derided by his enemies.

user-pic

Do you call him Barry? Does anyone who respects him?
Do you call Bush "Ira" or "Howard""
He doesn't need special treatment. He needs regular treatment.
I assume you think it's not disrespectful when the GOP calls us the "Democrat party."
Do you know these people at all? No? Lucky you.

user-pic

Personally, I call Obama, "Obama". And I strongly support and respect him. But if I were to lose respect for him, I hereby reserve the right to call him "Barry", "Butthead", "Barstool", "Barrycuda" or "Barrocky" if I so choose.

It is indeed disrespectful when the Republicans call us "The Democrat Party". It's actually childish. But guess what? Lots of Republicans don't respect the Democratic Party, and that is their right. People are free to be grossly disrespectful of their opponents and enemies in this country. It comes with the territory. Obama is going to face a lot worse than "Barry" from editorial cartoonists and talk radio loudmouths over the next four or eight years. There is no need to start whining about it. Whining is a sign of weakness.

My grandfather loved to call William H. Taft, "Fat Taft". That's the tough and blunt life of politics in America, and one American citizen expressing his contempt.

Maybe you want Obama to go up to some disrespectful redneck wingnut, slap him around a few times and say "Say my name, bitch?"

user-pic

And I do know a number of right-wingers. I've even got some in my own family.

user-pic

It is typical in white adolescent males. It usually starts around Junior High, in fact, and usually fades sometime after high school, or college for some. Still, others never shake the tendency to use nicknames to try to categorize and control others - especially those they fear or envy. I believe an appropriate term is emotional immaturity.

Guys like Joe the Plumber live on this sort of thing.

user-pic

I think it is just like calling him a member of the "Democrat" party. It is just a way to show disrespect. The Bush/Cheney/McCain administration gets disrespect the old fashioned way: They earn it!

user-pic

I'd like to give them credit for at least saying 'Barry' instead of their traditional 'boy,' or worse.

user-pic

As a Latina,I can tell you what a pain in the ass it is to have to "explain" your name over and over again to people who finds your mane "unique"or "different".
My Husband has the same problem and when we both worked in customer service we had customers asking very personal questions that had nothing to do with why they are calling. Since both of us are Americans we do not have any accent, but as soon as we say our name we get questions like, What nationality are you? What is the origin of your name? Where are you from? Question they would not ask if our name was John or Jennifer. Since customers cannot see us , you will finds some racist asshole who does not want to speak to us simply because of our name.

user-pic

They were probably just trying to make conversation (guilty). I'll have to remember to NOT do that going forward. **reminder to self: stick to the weather forecast**

user-pic

I completely agree with Dan K. I'm getting really tired of MJ's continuous stretches of his imagination.

I laughed out loud when I read "We recognize the code".

C'mon - the people who call him Barry do it because it conjures up thought of an inexperienced high school kid, which is what the right like to think Obama still is today.

There is no "code". People who can't stand Bush call him "Dubya" and people who can't stand Obama will call him "Barry".

It's just not a big deal.

Don't you guys have day jobs? (I'm currently unemployed so I can say that).

user-pic

Sure, Bill. It's a laugh riot when someone hears words that instill fear or revive notions of the horrific treatment of past generations.

Just because they don't qualify as "code" in your worldview doesn't mean these are not racist or intimidating constructions. Another person's fear and perceptions of racism aren't for any of us to judge.

Sensitivity and empathy, what you probably dismiss as "PC," ARE a big deal in a civilized society. That's part of what makes this election so important.

Toodles,
PJ

P.S., Having been unemployed as well this past year, I can tell you one thing for certain. Blogging your ignorance and insensitivity to the world won't get you a job. Take your unemployed ass to the library, Bill. Encounter a few books. It will do you a world of good.

user-pic

MiddleClassBill says;

There is no "code". People who can't stand Bush call him "Dubya" and people who can't stand Obama will call him "Barry".

No code, heh heh heh.

Reagan's "Welfare Queen in her Cadillac."

Wingnut "If Obama is elected he'll bring Al Sharpton to the White House."

"state's rights"

Willy Horton

Jesse Helms commercial showed a white fist crumbling up a job application, these words underneath: "You needed that job ... but they had to give it to a minority."

No code, heh heh heh.

user-pic

I think it's something altogether different - and nastier.

I've been "graced" with a few of the nasty e-mails that are circulating around. In one of them, the "Jihad Candidate" I believe, one of the points that "proved" Obama was anti-American and pro-Islam was the he stopped using his "American" name Barry and adopted the more sinister "Barack".
This resonates with a generation that remembers Cassisus Clay and Lew Alcindor (Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul Jabar for you youngsters.)

So by calling him "Barry," the speakers are reminding those who know "the real truth" that he is truly anti-American and likely a stealth agent of Islam intent on taking over the United States. Seriously.

BTW, I believe he was called Barry for his whole life until he got to college - and that his grandmother still uses that name. It's likely that college, on the mainland, was the first time he was seriously treated as a black, with all that carries. If so, then his reaction was apparently to say "Okay, you're right, I AM!")

user-pic

MJ,

The answer to your question is that it's all part of Josh's bitch slap theory of Republican politics. They use "Barry" in the mos derisive and disrespectful way and as a means of communicating with their own hateful kind the implication that Obama is a hypocrite because he is no longer called Barry. It's just that simple.

Any sort of school yard tactic like this isall part of the childish but supremely hateful approach of the Republicans. They know no other way. It is who they are: scumbags.

Don't worry though. Obama has now taken a slight lead in MO. If he holds that, the election is over. It's that simple. MO is the most reliable bellweather state bar none.

user-pic

Why do we call McCain every nasty name we can think up? Because it's fun!

user-pic

Grumpy McNasty, McShame, McSame, Lumpy McChuckleTrousers . . . (okay maybe not that last one)

user-pic

Perhaps you've seen some folks using a bad inflection when saying "Barry", but as Allen3 points out up above, there are Obama supporters who sometimes use his nickname and the meme may have actually started on Wonkette, a website that has made no secret of their favored candidate.

Also, though I'd have to look for the video and I'm not going to bother to do it now, but I can recall that sometime during the past month or so, Obama was telling a story about something his grandmother had said and in his anecdote, she called him "Barry".

I really don't know whether or not Barack still goes by or answers to Barry, but that's his perogative. James Earl embraced Jimmy, as does a couple of famous Republicans who use Tommy; Robert Dole was happy to be known as Bob, just like Thomas O'Neill went by Tip and John D. Rockefeller goes by Jay; Gerald Ford answered to both Gerald or Jerry and Ronald Reagan went by both his given name and Ronnie.

There may be some kind of attempt by a few to diminish Obama by referring to him by the unpresidential sounding Barry, but apparently his grandmother and his childhood friends use the nickname and just like his middle name, it is his and there's no reason for him or anyone to be ashamed.

user-pic

I've seen a few interviews with some of Obama's college and law school friends, and I believe some of them still call him Barry as well.

user-pic

I may be mistaken and again, I'm not going to look for the video, but I'm pretty certain that I've seen Michelle relate a story somewhere, where when she was quoting herself, she called him "Bare".

user-pic

the point isn't the disrespect that it shows. mj followed this post with a post where he repeatedly disrespects krauthammer with nicknames.

the point is the nicknames that the right use for obama are intended to call attention to his 'otherness' as something negative or sinister (if not evil or deserving of hatred).

sure, some of you may call obama, 'barry' out of affection. but just as black friends may call one another 'nigger'/'niggah' out of affection, when someone else does it, it means something completely different. and it isn't just the dropping of the 'r' at the end.

words have no meaning without context.

user-pic
If you hear some Republican calling Obama, Barry, understand that he or she are not thinking "Barry," they are thinking, other less acceptable labels coupled with "uppity."

Quite possibly your most inane post ever...and that's saying a lot. Sounds to me like you're putting the cart before the horse. I myself (not a Republican) have referred to Barry as "Barry." When he voted to revise FISA I called him "asshole." So what?

Names matter.

No, context matters. Given that I find your posts insightful, albeit occasionally irritating, is it ok for me to refer to you as "an occasionally irritating Jew?"

There's a difference between not adhering to political correctness and blatant racism. I know it when I see it.

user-pic
There's a difference between not adhering to political correctness and blatant racism.

but your false either/or doesn't leave room for insidious racism which is actually what is at work in most all of the nicknames the right has for obama.

you are correct when you say that context matters. but that's exactly why you calling obama 'barry' means something completely different from the right calling him 'barry'.

user-pic

So do I.

user-pic

You guys are all such hypocrites.

Why is it ok to call Bush "Dubya" but it's not ok to call Obama "Barry"?? And Krauthammer it's ok to call "Dr. Demento"? And McCain it's ok to call McShame or McSame?

Give me a break. So hypocritical

You pathetic people are making up the whole racist thing when it doesn't exist.

I've called him Barry because it sounds much more juvenile than Barack. It has nothing to do with his skin color. I like calling him Barry because it seems more appropriate for a junior senator with no experience

user-pic

out of genuine curiosity bill, do you believe - without caveat or equivocation - that:

blacks are equal to and no better or worse than whites?
arabs are equal to and no better or worse than non-arabs/whites?
muslims are equal to and no better or worse than christians?
jews are equal to and no better or worse than christians?
non-americans are equal to and no better or worse than americans?

i'm not suggesting that you would disagree with any of those questions. in fact, i would fully expect that you would say you do agree with those sentiments.

but i wonder, would you also agree that a number of mccain-palin supporters (if even maybe not more than a single digit percentage) might not agree with those sentiments?

if so, would it not follow that those supporters would use language and choose their words in a way that expresses and communicates their beliefs without using words that are overtly bigoted/racist or plainly offensive?

then maybe mj isn't guilty of making stuff up where it doesn't exist but in possibly exaggerating stuff that does exist?

user-pic

Found the reference I refer to above.

Find a candidate who changes his American name of Barry to the Muslim name of Barack Hussein Obama, and dares anyone to question his true ties under the banner of 'racism'.

It's from some bilge called the "Jihad Candidate" by someone called Rich Carroll
http://www.2sistersfromtheright.com/writings/Rich_Carroll/jihadcandidate.html

I've received two copies of this quite incredible piece from acquaintances. On each occasion, I've hit 'reply all,' sent a polite response providing links, etc. to address the factual statements and ignored the rest, and forwarded the whole thing to the Obama campaign. Lost the potential friendship of two acquaintances but don't feel I've lost anything at all. --------- Of interest, however, is that both of these people (and their spouses) are college-educated and live in blue New York.

Sometimes I get very discouraged...

user-pic

Call him Barry if you want. I will call him a socialist/ Marxist. You can call me Joe

user-pic

you wouldn't know a socialist/marxist if one shit in your mouth.

and for the record, i'll just call you, dummy.

user-pic

sorry so rude.

it was late and i was cranky.

and i've just grown so tired of the right throwing around 'socialist/marxist' as if they eiher a)were actually serious or b)actually knew what they were talking about.

the republican party needs to stop pretending that they don't believe in A MIXED ECONOMY and know that it is the only way the economy can actually function. the republican party needs to stop pretending that the choice at the ballot box is between socialism and free enterprise. the republican party needs to stop pretending that they don't overwhelmingly support our existing progressive income tax system.

when republican politicians, pundits, and party professionals spread this kind of nonsense around it makes the party in the electorate - guys like 'joe the (i'm not really a) plumber' and oldsarg - think and say really ignorant things.

it isn't just about hyperbole and heated rhetoric (which most anyone on any side can be guilty of - myself most certainly included). it's about DISINFORMATION. and that poses a very real danger to our democracy and our republic.

user-pic

fkaZ,

as you said, the wingnuts that throw around words
like socialist or marxist, couldn't in 10,000 years give you a cogent, articulate definition of either word, they're just babbling what they hear from talk radio.

user-pic

Christ, OldSarg is back, and with his mindless posts......some things never change (sigh)

user-pic

Amen OldSarg. Couldn't have said it better myself.

MJ - it's time to try to dream up some other crazy inference. How about for your next post - McCain was reincarnated just like Reba McEntire. In his prior life he was Adolf Hitler...

user-pic

They call him that for several reasons. The 'Barry' may come from Obama's historic use of the name while in high school. However the real reason why it is used now is because they are trying to be insulting. Barry - Barack - it's familiar and rolls off the tongue like all nicknames, friendly or teasing. As for Hussein, well that needs no explanation, but here's one anyway. It was Saddam's last name who is one of the hated individuals of our time, and also because it plays into the exotic nature of Obama's background. We want our public figures to have nice, Anglo names.

user-pic

Hussein is also the royal family of Jordan and I've met a few other Husseins (both first and last) over the years. It's really a somewhat common name and is only "exotic" to some Americans.

user-pic

i think they call him barry as a way of mocking his adolescent attempt to fit in. you'll never belong, they say, no matter what you call yourself.

user-pic

There is also 'McShame', 'McLame', 'McBush', 'McPalin', 'McInsane', 'McClinton', 'Clintonista', and posers signing off in solidarity with '[your name] Hussein' as a counter insurgent response of using a particular middle name as a pejorative.

user-pic

I agree that calling him "Barry" is probably intended to imply that his original name was "Barry" but he changed it when he took on a radical/black/Muslim identity and became "Barack Hussein." But the effect will be negligible, and may well be counterbalanced by making him seem more "American" to those who don't remember or think about the name changing of the 60's and 70's.

The tactic will backfire among one demographic they are trying to scare, older Florida Jewish voters. Knowing "Barrys" who were "really" named Baruch, they will assume the truth, that in his youth he went by "Barry" to fit in, and identify with him.

user-pic

Isn't childish name-calling like this reminiscent of Republicans' continuing use of the phrase "the Democrat Party" ?? It's like pinching your sister on the arm and then running away.

user-pic

Don't you mean "members of the Republic Party"?

user-pic

I don't know that it's racial, but it is meant to diminish. For those Obama supporters who call him Barry -- why? He's preferred the name Barack for the past 20+ years. You aren't his confidant or intimate, so call him what he asks to be called.
