This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, children health indeed.
DUDE! McCAIN THE INTERRUPTOR!!!
McCain needs to let Obama finishes his sentences, otherwise what will McCain have to repeat as though it's his own idea?
Thanks Claire.
Obama has counter punched like a champ so far. He is making a clear case that McCain is running for the top 2% (small biz owners that makes more than $250K) and driving the point home that he's cutting taxes for 95% of all working Americans.
So far, he's perfect.
Who does Joe the Plumber expect will be his customers? Without some redistribution, there are fewer customers. The wealth disparity implies not much in the broad middle.
My oldest friend does work at Joe's level, and has had no work since spring, in Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD. Owning that business is moot, at the moment.
We're all plumbers now Tom.
What's Joe's gross? If that tubby fool is netting over 250K I'd be shocked.
McCain is a bit disjointed. He did get the "Share the wealth" bit in.
A hatchet then a scalpal. Ha!
Ready. Fire. Aim.
I have a plan; boy does that sound creepily familiar.
Nixon with an anger problem.
Here he goes again with the overhead projector!
Stop your stinking "I know better than you, whippersnapper" smiling!
I don't think a scalpel will do much good after you've cut off your leg with a hatchet.
McCain keeps picking up that Sharpie like a scalpel....look out!
Now he's getting pissed.. Im not President Bush.....
New math. 92 becomes 2?
That was pretty good line about running against Bush 4 years ago.
My name is Joe, I am a plumber and I don't mind paying a little extra so kids can go to the planetarium and see with their own eyes that Earth is not flat.
Excellent!
McPain's supporters must be getting a hard on with his attacks.
Yes it was politigirl.. its going to a tougher fight for O
Scars to prove it, that's subtle.
Did McCain just say he opposed the Iraq War?
"WHen it comes to economic policies, essentially what you're proposing is eight years of the same thing" -- BOOM, there it is. Actually, it's somewhat less true in that these days McCain doesn't KNOW what he's proposing from one hour to the next, so who the hell knows if it will continue the Bush policies or not?
The War in Iraq which "I vigorously opposed"???? What?
The Republicans scarred McCain???
Oh, show the scars, Please, please, please.
I never liked the notion that Obama needed to be tougher, but I think he may need to bring it tonight.
SHIEFFER GOES THERE!!
Am I crazy or is he countering McCain beautifully?! He is clear and coherent in all his counterattacks.
Door's open, McCain ...
McCain is really coming off like an angry old man.
He has used that scars line about a dozen times.
Here we go!
No town hall meetings—that's why I did it. It's Obama's fault.
OMG, the TOWN HALLS are to blame for the "nasty turn"!!
Why would Obama stand up to his party if he thinks they're right?
"Because he didn't play my games by my rules, I had to go negative"
George Wallace. He's about to CRY!!!!
Right, the tone would have been different because .... of TOWN HALLS Obama disagreed to do.
And of course the revisionist history of who started this negative shit! Fucking McCain!
I can't wait to hear Obama's response to this.
Cue the violins.
I wouldnt have done the town halls either. Never fight on the others guys turf. Too wasy to put in plants..
waaaah! waaaaah! waaaaah!
"Every time there has been an outbounds remark by a Republican I have repudiated it!" Well, why don't we start with your running mate.
Sheesh!
Holy toledo...."I've always repudiated" the nasty language, McCain? Try again, old man!
McCain: Rep. Lewis hurt me.
Obama: Well, look. (Wish he would drop that mannerism.)
He's playing the victim card?! He's rolling over...hahahaha.
BOOM, 527's!!
YESSSS!!!! Barack called him on the town hall BS!
Like they didnt run those Celebrity adds..
Obama.. he's a celebrity.. no he's different.. no he's risky.. Risky Business Celebrity..
Door was open for Ayers and nothing from McCutNRun.
So sweet to see GOP complaining about lack of money!
I can't believe that McCain is going on about negative attacks.
Joe the Plumber, wasn't he in the Clash.
Fuck! Obama brought it up! YES!!!!!!!!!
What a sniveling little turd. What happened to the tough repugs. Feelings hurt right and left.
Hit him with all the phrases from the psychos at the bible spice rallies. "Kill him!" has no place in US elections at all.
Mount McCain is gonna blow. Look out!
Stop interrupting him old man!
I think McCain is doing okay for what he's trying to do. I don't agree with him but he's aort of hanging in there.
Repudiation is a daaaaaangerous submerged reef, McCain, not sure you wanna sail in that direction...
What is he talking about?!?!?!?
People who come to your rallies are racist, too, you a-hole.
He's playing the veteran card.
Jesus Christ what the hell is that old man talking about!?
McCain on spot, squirming.
Patriotic bigots!
What's the T-shirt that gets to McC?
I gotta t-shirt of a pig with lipstick?
What the hell is he talking about now?
McCrazy is starting to lose it.
watch the fireworks start.
McCain, the whiner. There's that repudiate line again. Does someone have an actual count on McCain's repudiations?
This is bullshit. Get off this nonsense.
What about what PALIN said? Did you repudiate that???
I don't agree with him but he's aort of hanging in there.
Yes, his aorta hasn't given way yet.
he's gonna blow!!!!!!!!!!
IT is the Economy, Stupid!
And there it is! Kick him where it hurts, O ...
Oh my God he's going with ACORN!
ACORN IS DESTROYING THE FABRIC OF DEMOCRACY -- RUN FOR THE HILLS!!
YESSSSS!!! Here comes the KNOCKOUT PUNCH!
He still won't look him in the eye.
Im watching CNN>. evertime McCain talks both graphs go down...so far. Men seem to be more interested in Ayers.. the dirty terrorist..
his aorta, heh...I didn't do that on purpose
Well done, Arjay ;-)
Fabric of democracy!?! Are you shitting me?
What about the fabric of our US union with secessionists from the Alaska Independence Party?
10 bucks (for Obama, of course) says McCain loses it tonight....
Oh awesome, I forgot about the CNN lines!
Sorry, arjay. Over-excited.
"Let me tell you who I do associate with" -- SWEET!
McCain sure is a blinky son of a bitch, ain't he?
What in god's name is McCain smirking at?
excellent..."let me tell you who I DO associaate with"
Mccain is going nowhere.
Side note: Why is Obama wearing a red tie and Grampa Simpson wearing a blue one?
Speaks to each others' tailor bases ;-)
WOW...he is really losing it!
McCain is getting pummeled.
John McCain had a long association with Cindy McCain while he was still married to his 1st wife...
BOO, I SAID IT!
OUCH, Running mates. Here it comes.
HA....he's gotta justify Sarah Barracuda. LOL!!!
Thanks for VP hit, Bob!
HERE WE GOOOOOOOO!!!!!
could somebody *please* make McCain quit lying about Obama raising taxes? sheesh
Yes, Obama just said, "that's a lie".
What is wrong with McCain's eyes?? One is all watery and bulgy... oh and the incessant blinking...
His head is going to explode soon.
OMG, McCain is so rambly, it's like trying to follow a bumblebee around the room with your eyes...
I had to turn it off, got tired of screaming at the TV!!! There is just NO WAY that I even give a damn what McCain has to say about anything at all!
Biden is from Scranton. Nuff said.
Bible spice wants her state to be its own country.
I love that the younger guy comes off as more mature than the older one...
and down goes the CNN lines!
Wait a minute...she is no role model to me!
WHat a great question. I'm sooo happpy.
Palin is a role model?
The natural gas pipeline is gonna "relieve the energy dependence of the Lower 48"???
HAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA
a bresh of freth air
Should we start a pool on when Mac's head explodes?
Wishful thinking, but still.
Yes...and all the money goes to Obama.com. I already bet $10.
CNN line: Ohio Uncommitted Men seem to like Sarah Barracuda.
Yes, but interestingly enough the uncommitted women line drops waaaay down when he brings her up...
Autism?? where the hell did that come from
is he SERIOUS!!!!!
Really, Sarah Palin should be president because she has a special needs child. Really?!!?
Score!
COCKAMAMIE!!
Who coached Mac so he would smile once in a while?
Palin breath of fresh air?
Now he's interrupting the moderator too.
I think Obama lost an opportunity with the Palin question...
And Obama pointed out a fundamental flaw in McCrazy's econ policy...nice...
Palin reminds me of that line from "The Electric Horseman" "She's very breathy".. "Hell thats all she is breath"..
Let me get this right, McCain is gonna ELIMINATE MidEast and Venezuelan oil imports in 4 years? I think he might be trying out for a guest spot on "HEROES" right now.
HOw about all the russian subs at the bottom of the black sea with nuclear reactors aboard being not the safest.
HOLY SHIT. I am now making stupid comments. McGrumpy is making me stupid just listening to him.
I hate to say this, but I think Obama's response on the Ayers/ACORN issue should have been smoother. And maybe harder hitting. I mean, he practiced that, right?
Palin reminds me of that line from "The Electric Horseman" "She's very breathy".. "Hell thats all she is breath"..
I liked Obama's response. Let's see how it plays.
What the heck is the fixation on 45 nuke plants? Where does that number come from? It's a drop in the bucket, and dwarfed by the amount of energy going up our smokestacks.
Who's buying that policy plank?
this is clearly McCain's best performance
OK - I am able to breathe. DO NOT TALK ABOUT Palin supporting austistic families. She doesn't have a clue... speaking as a mom of an autistic son. If she did, she would not be parading her special needs baby around like she does. She cut funds for special needs - the Special Olymics - as Govenor. Obama, you made a mistake. She is someone that ABSOLUTELY should NOT be respected on anything, particularly in this realm. Uggghhhh!!!!
Drill, drill, drill. Then drill some more.
This is elder abuse
I AM a free trader, I'd trade my soul, wait, oops, I did already...
The left side of McCain's face seems to be swelling up as the hour goes by.
No one has the money to build 45 nuke plants.
Columbia..that's next to Spain
This is not a fair fight
I see, Non-Traveling Obama is now responsible for killing our teens.
Hit him hard Obama.
I hate to say this, but I think Obama's response on the Ayers/ACORN issue should have been smoother. And maybe harder hitting. I mean, he practiced that, right?
Be sure to e-mail Barry your analysis and suggestions. He'll appreciate it.
No one has the money to build 45 nuke plants.
That's not a smile, it's a smirk. And he looks pathetic.
This is not a fair fight

McCain's worst debate performance?
Pitiable
and we have a dip at Obama wants to talk with terrorists. wow
mccain is communicating "fuck you, barry.." via his morse code eye blinking. check it out...from his navy days.
New topic, yes. Boy was that a weird exchange.
Right, John, you're an expert on Columbia because you were born next door and went down there earlier this year when the hostages were freed.
A President can't know everything so I doubt making a junket trips to Bogota will provide that much enlightenment to a McCain administration.
mccain is communicating "fuck you, barry.." via his morse code eye blinking. check it out...from his navy days.
I don't think he realizes that the camera is still on him when Obama's speaking
I think McCain could have just as easily pre-recorded his entire debate performance tonight.
He drifts from topic to topic as if he doesn't know where he is. He interrupts when no one else is talking.
He's swinging at a pinata with a blindfold on.
Mac still has trouble taking Obama seriously.
Mac still has trouble taking Obama seriously.
Can someone with HDTV tell me if McCain's goiter is getting bigger during the debate?
Health care....okay, Johnny Mac, what ya got?
lines going up on O's health care speal......McCain mouth open.. lines down....
When I get sick, I'm going to cough on Johnny
I don't think he's said "my friends" once...and that's a full chug in our game over here...
Whoops, just did.
That was just to his "friend Joe." He hasn't mentioned the rest of us yet...
Be sure to e-mail Barry your analysis and suggestions. He'll appreciate it.
Not really sure what that's supposed to mean. I thought we were all just talking here.
How ya gonna pay for those fitness programs, McSurly?
So McCain swung back to apathetic when he threatened to spin out of control if he got engaged.
He punked, all the way. And he didn't even tempt Obama into vulgarity!
Obama is sticking to his game plan from debates 1 and 2. Not, necessarily, a bad idea. But I do wish he would take this egomaniacal, philandering, flip-flopping bigamist out to the woodshed and throttle his arrogant ass.
Hey, you have been the star of this debate Johnny Plumber. Did you hear McCain announce that you are rich? That means you make more than 5 million a year. Can I borrow 50 bucks?
Ha McCain is shocked!! "ZERO?!"
Did he just slow down and articulate for McCain as if he's a little kid?? I LOVE IT!!
thank goodness Obama said "your fine is zero"...I can't believe he left that hanging before
Seriously, What the fuck is this Joe Plumber stuff?
Is McCain really pandering to the Plumber vote?
McCain is trying to get the plumbers on his side because he is going down the shit can as we speak.
P.S. Nice job pissing off Canada and England.
McCain just was just hoisted on his own Plumber Joe.
Refunds? Didn't somebody else just try this?? Is McCave trying to buy votes here?
Again, what the hell is a "refundable" tax credit?
Refundable to whom???
It means that if application of the credit to the amount of taxes due results in a negative number, the negative amount is paid to you as a refund.
Obama seems a bit off his game tonight. He should have been able to make a slam dunk against McCain's health plan, but the problems in McCain's problem came off as a bit incoherent.
Agreed. When it's time to close the sale, Obama always messes it up. Look for the polls to tighten over the next few days. Obama is blowing it tonight. His biggest weakness is that when he's ahead, he gets cocky and starts f*cking around.
Obama is kind of sucking tonight. He's being diffuse and wonky. He should be more direct. McCain just talked about how he wants to freeze Federal spending. Fine. Whatever. But then he said he wanted to build 45 (I think) new nuclear power plants. Obama's response should have been, "How are you going to pay for that, John? You just said that you're going to freeze Federal spending. Each plant costs billions of dollars to build. How are you going to pay for those plants?"
I'm giving this one (reluctantly) to McCain.
I agree that Obama isn't real sharp tonight; fortunately neither is McCain.
I'm watching it on CNN because my wife won the argument. I HATE that line down at the bottom. It's completely distracting. I think Obama is doing better in this later part of the debate. And I think the closing arguments are going to be critical. From what I've heard so far, I'm guessing tonight will be seen as a draw, which will probably benefit McCain.
Good point about the plants.
Obama, do not let that BS about the fine slide
Honestly, I still can't get over the old man saying that ACORN threatens to destroy the fabric of democracy!!!!!!!
Seriously, who is this hypothetical joe guy that McCain is hitching his wagon to?
McCain should go to his debate prep team and punch them right in the chops.
Every time granny goes back to Joe the Plumber he flatlines on the CNN meter
I don't get this whole obsession with rich Joe plumber who is going to get taxed. Does regular Joe plumber care?
tooo much gummint
BoomBoom.. Joe Plumber was a guy Obama talked to on the stump. Video is out there..
Sorry angelfish (lovely name)! Just over-excited and all worked up. I apologise.
Hubert Humphrey was called the Happy Warrior.
John McCain is the unhappy Warrior.
Senator Government? I think that's Jennifer Government's uncle.
Fun book.
Senator O'Government?
Obama is doing too much smirking while McCain is talking. He'd be better off keeping a serious demeanor and then rebutting when it is his turn.
The smirking makes him look somewhat condescending.
It's already been negated by McCain rolling his eyes and fuming on the other side. He's smirking because McCain is lying and he's countered everything he's shot at him so far.
McBlinky is the creepiest old man I know. Scary and twitchy.
I agree with the above. Obama's style worked, why change tonight. This is a nod to Obama. Can't imagine how very difficult it must be to stay cool next to this filth....
Breyer?
hrebendorf and arjay I think you're wrong- MCCain is smirking and nonsensical and talking to John Smallberries the fucking plumber
I personally like what Obama is saying, and I hate what McCain is saying. But I'm trying to not judge it from my personal perspective. I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of an undecided voter. And from that perspective, I'm looking for clarity. I'm not looking for a TKO--I'm looking for that one killer blow that decides this thing once and for all. Obama hasn't hit McCain hard enough yet. It's all about the post-debate narrative. And I think the pundits are going to say that McCain made a comeback.
If I see McCain or Palin wink one more time I'm going to throw my fucking television against the wall.
I must have missed it. Thanks Mysterious Stranger.
BTW. I am assuming that this is a guy who makes more than $250K if McCain keeps bringing him up.
Yeah he's obviously a very well off plumber. Probably owns a solid business. He's not the journeyman who works 50 hrs a week.
He's trying to make Obama out to be a socialist but he's making a very populist argument. I think it's been effective.
Did he say Breyer? Does he mean Alito? Does he even know what he means?
I'm not liking Obama's way of speaking either. He sounds mealy-mouthed. I was hoping he'd move away from that, and speak more decisively. It's a style issue..., not one of substance.
And why is McCain constantly smirking? I realize that I am looking at this through biased eyes, but he is an ass. Would it be that hard to show a little respect for your opponent?
McCain couldn't bring himself to say Obama's name there at the beginning of the closing statement. Odd.
I can't imagine how tired they must be.
Joe the Plumber on GMA tomorrow?
Culture war called!
The womens line peaked when O talked about a judge supporting womens rights.
Trial lawyers dream? are you serious? It is better to tromp on the dreams of trial lawyers then bring justice to women. So much for pandering to the women even with Palin on your ticket.
I think McCain is getting some serious licks in...I don't like it, but I think he is
He's trying to throw the hardest punches but Obama keeps setting the record straight pretty clearly.
Come on, you guys - Obama may not be shining, but he is mopping the floor with McBlinky.
The pundits have every reason to call this one for McCain since it will make for a more compelling story line. I'm sure the instapolls will give it to Obama again, though.
Another roll of the yes by McCain...
Not a good thing.
I just noticed that both candidates are lefties.
Now I feel threatened that righties rights are under attack.
O is hitting it out of the park on the abortion issue.
These are all tough issues. Thats why its called the culture war.
Obama is constantly on the defense tonight...I don't like it.
Please God bring it back to the economy!!!!!!!!!
I am not pregnant, I am broke. SPEAK TO ME!!!!!!
I thought McCain was committed to making his ads about Obama's character and associations stick?
He went nowhere.
I think McCain's eye rolling and smirking are on par with Gore's sighs in 2000...
Not wise to dis "health of the mother."
Hard work these tough issues.
McCain is sighing louder than Gore did in 2000.
Yeah, and he's being snottier, too. Didn't think it was possible.
Is that true, that we spend more per capita than European states on education?
I bet Japan and the rest of South East Asia spends more than us.
Well maybe Japan, China and maybe S. Korea, the rest of Asia is pretty poor.
Education is a good lead into the economy.
McCain is an adoptive parent. Great. So am I.
He needs to do the math. Most adoptions in the US are of related children. The remainder is about 50,000 per year.
There are > 1M abortions a year. Does he propose that each adoptive parent now adopt 20x as many children as they have already?
"Where are the parents?"
"Health" of the mother? "Health" in slimy little air quotes?
I just had to stop the TV and scream Fuck You, John McCain multiple times. Anyone who would dare oppose a provision to protect the health of the mother in an anti-abortion is a vile, scum-sucking, woman-hating pig.
So, just one more time, fuck you, John McCain.
If there were any remaining undecided women, I think he just lost them all with that. I wanted to kick him in his head just then.
McPoops is denigrating the "health of the mother" concern re: abortion. That'll go over real well with the "human" demographic, eh? What a deplorable slag.
I think McCain is insane.
So, let me see, eloquence is bad. Stammering, convoluted, sniggering bombast is good.
arjay: I think McCain is getting some serious licks in...I don't like it, but I think he is
He's gotten a couple. But it's been more than offset by Obama. Watching the CNN lines, it's clear that obama is getting bigger approval than McCain on most issues.
Poorly educated people. Hell that is McCain's base.
Sorry, this debate has got the worse of me.
Hey, Phoebe, don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel!! ;-)
Charter schools again. How much does it cost to enroll your child in a charter school, John? Ain't cheap here in NY!
Did he just say that uncertified military personnel should be teachers? As opposed to people who trained for the job??
That's what I heard.
WIth all love to the soldiers - I need a person with PTSD who is uncertified teaching my kid. NOT
Say hello to President Obama. McCain sounds like a total idiot tonight. For a guy who had to "hit one out of the park tonight" he's striking out big time.
Michelle, go ahead on over to the White House and measure for those drapes.
According to one source we are second, way behind Norway, in per-capita education spending, with them at $2850 and the US at $1780.
I'm watching on C-Span, with a split-screen format. If you haven't seen it, you should take a look. It's almost impossible to endure looking at McCain's grimacing, twitching, blinking mug while Obama is speaking.
Here we go again ...
Condescending self-righteous prick.
He's seething. This works well with the angry white guy and his follow-ons.
What the hell does Palin know about autism?
I'd place a lot of that high education cost on the textbook biz.
Does McCain know that Palin's kid doesn't have autism?
I just wish Obama would say "Calm down Johnny...you're about to bust a gut!"
That's cause Sarah is autistic
Many Navy and Airforce vets have years of experience teaching technical subjects. Its part of their development program as they go up in NCO ranks. I work with a lot of them and they are very well trained. It wouldn't take much to put them into vocational technical training. A lot of them have BA's anyway.
Yeah, but are they trained to teach KIDS? My experience with military educators is that they're trained to work with adults. I don't know that plugging military folks into public schools (except maybe grades 11 or 12) is a great idea.
What a fucking idiot. Palin's kid has Down Syndrom. NOT AUTISM!!!!
Is his head up his ass? What the fuck is he talking about?
He has seemed to be confused on this issue in other public appearances as well.
McCain just said, "We'll spend the money to combat autism." Didn't he already say he was going to freeze Federal spending?
Sarcasm. Lovely. Pathetic old man.
Yay! Obama gets last word.
Again with the joking. Fabulous. Goodbye, John. Don't let the voters slam the door on your ass on the way out.
Better yet, I hope they do.
As the parent of a child with autism, can I just say how much I want to punch this man in the mouth right now?
McCain Advisers: "Senator, our focus group polling clearly shows that undecided voters in battleground states are looking for an angry prick to lead this country."
McCain: "Well, it's a stretch, but I'll really let Angry John out tonight."
[McCain leaves the room]
McCain Advisers: "Oh Shit, the chart was upside down..."
Good one!
2000 sluts, now that's a high school!
Yeah, I was waiting for Obama to take another bite at that federal spending freeze. He says he'll freeze it, but then he rattles off a list of programs and things we need to do.
Oh no.. he stole the "we cant keep doing what we have been doing for 8 years" line..
made you to make us trust us
I trust you not one bit
Same failed Politics!!!
SLAM.
During the dirty campaign segment, McCain kept looking at his marker whenever Obama was shaming him. It says Sharpie, John. Or is your soul in there?
Gave me a hernia laughing. Off to the ER, thanks.
Well, if this was paradigm shifting game changer, I missed it.
All right, in the event that someone else hasn't pointed this out yet, Palin's latest child has Down's Syndrome, which is why McCain continues to refer to Autism. Both special needs children, just one can't be diagnosed with a genetic test, at least not yet.
Obama had better nail his closer. He has the last word. Let's hear it.
Crashing planes and constant partying have resulted in McLame's obvious brain rot. Obama laid off him tonight. Kind of too bad, but not too bad (if you know what I mean).
McCain is going to freeze spending, use a chainsaw, hand our $200 billion in tax credits to the wealthy and punish poor school systems, and end safe legal abortion to build the orphanage sweat shops we need to compete with the Chinese...
And balance the budget by 2012. While he deals with the worst economic crisis in a century.
McCain is right-- these are not George Bush's economic policies. They are Herbert Hoover's.
I think Brooks has a crush.
I have no idea how this would have looked to somebody whose biases are opposite mine. And I just don't understand people who are still undecided. (!!) But to me Obama was very cool and calm, and McCain was a seething, jerky, interrupting hot-head. Obama made sense just like always does... to me.
Doesn't anyone know if Joe the Plumber is related to Joe Six pack?
Why can't Obama just say, "Hold the bus....Let's make this clear once and for all...I am not going to raise you taxes, and when Sen. McCain says I am that is just total complete BS"
Because by repeating the statement he reemphasizes the frame, even if he is denying it.
I have to change the channel Bill Bennett is on.
What a putz..
With the exception of the one question asked specifically about their running mates, the only time McCain mentions Palin is when he is talking about special needs Children. I guess her main qualification for being President is having a child with downs syndrome.
Except he kept calling Down Syndrome "Autism"
Yep, I commented on that. It's one of the last comments. He really doesn't know the difference, and there is a ton of difference in symptoms and treatment.
McCain is mentally unbalanced.
Brooks definitely has a crush. Who wants to live with McCain on your TV for 4 yrs? But Obama, cool.
Brooks has been running away from this crush all year. That's why he writes one of those weird anti-Obama columns about once a month.
Begala called McCain "Grumpy McNasty" in the split screen. Said he looked like Gore in 2000...
Thank gawd that shit is over. I have to agree with what I just heard Rachel Maddow say - the repercussions of McCain ridiculing concerns about the mother's life and health (in context of abortion legislation) are going to be huge.
McCain voters should save money on gas
I completely agree with David Gergen. Obama started off weak and McCain clobbered him. Obama won the last half hour.
I don't think McCain clobbered Obama. He would have needed to be coherent in order to do that. But Obama definitely was not sharp tonight.
I dont agree the McCain clobbered anyone.
I think I overstated that. I thought McCain beat him in the first half. I thought Obama dominated the second half. I don't think anybody got clobbered tonight (although the CNN polling is showing that McCain did).
McCain said he'd whip Obama's you-know-what tonight. He did not whip Obama's you-know-what tonight. CNN's polls indicate another big loss for McCain. Possibly his penultimate loss.
Obama wire to wire
Did McCain call health care plans that cover transplants Cadillac plans and equate those transplants with cosmetic surgery or did I not hear that right?
Even he is not sure what he said about that.
I think he meant hair transplants. He's hit that line before - I think maybe Biden had hair transplants.
Andrea Mitchell is nuts. She thinks McCain won the night. Seems to be equating aggression with victory.
McCain keeps saying that Sarah P. knows about autism. Her child is Downs. Can she see autism from her front porch? They are very different conditions, but I doubt that J.M knows the difference or even what Palin's son has.
Can't touch Down's since it is a well-understood birth defect whose only prevention is early abortion.
O-Kay ........ at least there's some sense to that. I was wondering if no one had the nerve to tell him that Trig was a Downs baby, not autistic or that he was unable to understand the difference. Good heavens! I understand why I've never been able to be doctrinaire. Just couldn't make a statement so apparently off-the-wall like that without connecting the dots.
Candy Crowley thinks that McCain's "angry moment" might be the defining moment of the debate. I missed it, unfortunately. To me, he always looks like an angry jackass. Gloria Borger thinks McCain blew it when he said he'd balance the budget. I agree. No one believes it can be done, and McCain sounded clueless when he said it. Obama's biggest missed opportunity this evening was not pointing out the utter ABSURDITY of McCain's pledge to freeze the Federal budget. It's an asinine pledge and Obama should have beat him over the head with it.
Line of the night: "Senator Obama, I am not President Bush."
Obama did come back to this pledge a couple of times...like when McCain said he'd increase funding for autism. Maybe he could have hounded the issue a little more, I guess.
I think Obama is already looking ahead to the presidency. When he talked about working with Democrats, Republicans and Independents, I got the distinct impression that he's already working toward that goal. I don't think he wants to stir up partisan tension this late in the game, and I think he's willing to lose a point or two in the polls in order to keep the rancor at an absolute minimum.
I'm listening to Hillary right now, and I SO want her to be in charge of the Senate. Is there any way to bump that feckless nit Harry Reid out of the top spot?
According to CNN, the polls are showing that Obama won the debate and gained in favorability. McCain lost and his unfavorables went up.
So I'm full of crap. Obama won. I've never been happier to be wrong.
couple of observations.
The split screen showed McCain listening to Obama, or was he? Was he being fed talking points? One wonders. Eye movement was interesting.
The man is a Republican no doubt about it...all the classic brutal, reptilian qualities come out under stress. McCain seems unstable and very angry...we do not want this person to become our president.
>>Was he being fed talking points? One wonders.
I definitely had that feeling when he burst out with the Ayers/Acorn thing. Before that, it seemed like he was avoiding it. It was as though he was being told to USE IT NOW.
McMoron did not "clobber" Obama at any point in this debate, nor in any of the others. The fact that O is civil, intelligent, unflappable, and thoughtful in the face of the almost incoherent ramblings of his opponent, can hardly be called getting "clobbered." I wish O was more combative, but he and his prep team seem to know what they're doing.
McCain's not George Bush he just voted with him 95% of the time.
I wish Obama had hit back harder on the Ayers/ACORN stuff. How about bringing up McCain talk in front of ACORN where he praised them as a much needed force in America?
The CNN focus group thought Obama won it. Not by much, but they think he won it. Nobody (not even the Republicans in the group) liked the mention of Ayers. And nobody liked "Joe the Plumber". Joe the Plumber was a STUPID gimmick. It sounds like Bob the Builder. A great pitch if you're going for the Sesame Street crowd. Not a great pitch if you're speaking to grown adults.
Did you catch the McCain fluff in the debates, when he was talking about Palin taking on the big guys, he said she was "breast of fresh air."? Are we talking Freudian here, or what?
Did I hear wrong? He caught it, but I think he definitely said it.
I heard it too...
I think he Spoonerized it worse than that, but only YouTube will tell...
Speaking of a breast of fresh air, here's Sarah meeting with the Russians. From Larry Flynt's forthcoming "Nailin' Palin".
I didnt catch the breast thing.. Ill have to play back my tivo.. Its going on YOU Tube :)
Anybody else use them new TPM blogs to live-blog this debate?
We did some on-the-fly factchecking on ours.
Questions: Why no mention of McCain's gig as ACORN keynote speaker?
What's with the autism references?
And how can he return to the VILE LIES about OVERHEAD PROJECTORS!?
autism is a big scare. it's sort of like the gay, but you're still allowed to be afraid of your kids catching it. or rather, you're still allowed to openly express your fear that your kids will catch it (whereas no mainstream politician is allowed to say "we will put money into keeping your kids from catching the gay.") because the cause of autism is nebulous, and because autism itself comes in many varieties, it can serve as a kind of catch all for "everything that's wrong with these kids today."
conservatives particularly love the idea that autism might be caused by vaccines, despite the fact that multiple studies have concluded that there is no link. but it's kinda like global warming or "intelligent design" - you could trust the "scientists," but who made them the authority? so I was not surprised to hear John McCain say that the "link" between autism and vaccination needs to be explored further, way back before he took on Mrs. Special Needs herself. it's a wingnut thing - this was Rick Santorum's own pet project, and it continues to be popular amongst the fringiest fringe of that base.
the autism community (made up of auties & aspies and the people who love them) is as deeply divided politically as any other family, and a lot of these issues are volatile - true testament that the personal is political. but there's a bigger story here. and i'm not just being snide in drawing a parallel b/t queerness as homosexuality and queerness as autism. the most popular "treatment" for autism (ABA) and the so-called "treatment" for homosexuality (Reparative Therapy) came from the same roots: the behavioral psychologists working under Ivar Lovaas at UCLA in the 60's and 70's. In other words, autism and gayness are "cured" the same way. so there is a conservative agenda in the "special needs" of some kids, and it's not as benign as it might otherwise seem.
(sorry for the long post, but this is pretty much what my life is about, both in my work and as a member of an autie family.)
Let's watch Olbermann!
Yes, you heard right, we were rolling!!! "McBush" showed his beautiful colors this evening though. Fortunate for the rest of us, they are not red, white, and blue. Overcompensation for, what could only be assumed as an inability to acheive, let alone maintain a credible erection, continual interupttions were simply painful to watch. Our teenage daughter is better mannered. Still maintaining the fabulous republican credo of answering a question without an answer I see, unless you count the eye blinking....perhaps he likes to view the world through rave strobes. How many years has he been in Washington?? he acts like a neophyte!
McCain got "most improved" - but Obama won
Alex Castellanos just said, "Why would you raise ANYBODY'S taxes during these tough economic times?"
Uhmmm... To pay the bills? To pay for Bush's war? To pay for the 700 billion dollar bailout? To balance the budget? (Which McCain claims he'll somehow do without raising taxes.)
Republicans want everything for free. They think we can pay for infrastructure improvements, wars of choice, and bailing out a financial system their idiotic deregulation helped destroy, and they want to charge it off to our grandchildren.
I thought he seemed more afraid from the very beginning--thought of Higgins after the ball in 'My Fair Lady': 'Shortly after we came in, I saw at once we'd easily win, and after that I found it deadly dull.' Emphasis on the anger, and there was, but I thought he'd basically given up at the beginning, and I agree with those who said he 'hyperventilated'. Obama couldn't keep from laughing at him, he was SO out of control it was unbelievable. I think he even felt sorry for him a bit, I know I did till toward the end, and then I saw that he'd even try to use the Education Card, which is politically nothing right now, to try to keep attacking. What a repellent man he's become, and his formerly gorgeous wife just seems like this garden-variety spoiled airhead.
CNN question: "Who spent more time attacking his opponent?"
Obama: 7%
McCain: 80%
Poll demographic was 40% Democrat, 30% Republican and the rest Independent.
If anybody wondered if McCain was creepy and old before, there's nothing to wonder about anymore. Whoever is foolishly noting "points scored" is ignoring the only thing that really matters when both candidates essentially regurgitate the same talking points they've been spewing for weeks—McCain has developed new and even more unwatchable tics over the last month, culminating in more than enough twitching and eyeball rolling to provide highlights reels for the Daily Show until well into 2010. The essential litmus test was my wife's inability to stay in the same room as the Television with the debate for more than a half hour—she simply could not stand watching McCain anymore. The question used to be "which presidential candidate would you want to have a beer with [I needed three just to keep my incipient migraine from blowing out of control]. Now it's more like "what candidate could you stand sitting with in a waiting room in a doctor's waiting room for 90 minutes?"
I would have like to seen Obama respond to the question of whether Palin is qualified to be President with:
"Well, obviously That One thought she was qualified."
Would have been too funny.
Especially if he had winked. ;)
I was interested to see that some initial responses, including Josh's, were that this was McCain's best debate, but I thought he was far worse than even in the others. It was like Obama almost had to be his caregiver. I thought McCain was really horrible and really seemed like a total COWARD, mainly.
Yep. He came off like a common angry white man. We're covered up with those here in the South, and I'm sure they all loved it. We've been in the grips of the angry white men for 8 years now, and we're in bad trouble.
One last note.. and thanks all :)
I just replayed the segment where John made his breast/breath gaffe. I noticed that the mens line was going up and up while he was talking about Palin, as soon as he said "and she will be my partner" the line dived.... LOL>. I guess that visual was just too much.
Hmm. I call myself an Independent, too. I'm nowhere close to "undecided" though. I've voted for Republicans before, before "they lost their minds." (Quoth Charles Barkley) At this point in my life, I'm completely anti-Republican, but I'm still Independent.
Just saw McCain's air quotes on "health of the mother" - that is beyond the pale. How could any woman vote for him in good conscious?
How can small government people think it's a good idea for the government to get inbetween you and your doctor and decide when your health is at stake?

Thanks Claire.
Obama has counter punched like a champ so far. He is making a clear case that McCain is running for the top 2% (small biz owners that makes more than $250K) and driving the point home that he's cutting taxes for 95% of all working Americans.
So far, he's perfect.

Who does Joe the Plumber expect will be his customers? Without some redistribution, there are fewer customers. The wealth disparity implies not much in the broad middle.

I have no idea how this would have looked to somebody whose biases are opposite mine. And I just don't understand people who are still undecided. (!!) But to me Obama was very cool and calm, and McCain was a seething, jerky, interrupting hot-head. Obama made sense just like always does... to me.

With the exception of the one question asked specifically about their running mates, the only time McCain mentions Palin is when he is talking about special needs Children. I guess her main qualification for being President is having a child with downs syndrome.

What's with the autism references?
And how can he return to the VILE LIES about OVERHEAD PROJECTORS!?
October 15, 2008 11:00 PM | Reply | Permalink
autism is a big scare. it's sort of like the gay, but you're still allowed to be afraid of your kids catching it. or rather, you're still allowed to openly express your fear that your kids will catch it (whereas no mainstream politician is allowed to say "we will put money into keeping your kids from catching the gay.") because the cause of autism is nebulous, and because autism itself comes in many varieties, it can serve as a kind of catch all for "everything that's wrong with these kids today."
conservatives particularly love the idea that autism might be caused by vaccines, despite the fact that multiple studies have concluded that there is no link. but it's kinda like global warming or "intelligent design" - you could trust the "scientists," but who made them the authority? so I was not surprised to hear John McCain say that the "link" between autism and vaccination needs to be explored further, way back before he took on Mrs.
