Obama Does It
I've been watching these debates since 1960 and this is the first time I haven't been frustrated by all the opportunities the Democrat missed.
This time, my nominee, and our next President, dotted every i and crossed every t. McCain needed a game changer. In stead, Obama solidified his lead.
I'm proud of Obama. (And, boy, he has sure improved since the Democratic primary debates).
And, good job, we scared him out of mentioning Ayers. He'll just stick to doing his hate smears in his spots but not right in front of Obama.
Bravo, Obama. He won this one big.

He missed too many opportunities in the first half our and as a Socialistic Tax and Spend Yellow Dog Democrat I must say I love the idea of the government buying up all the crappy loans on deflating home values but I'd mostly have to agree

I think the 'terrorist' memes floated the past few days were mere trial balloons.
They saw what reaction it would provoke - and wisely decided to cease and desist.
Obama by about 20-25% again.
Unless he starts drooling, this election is over.

I think Obama has to go into election day with at least a 7% advantage, as that kind of number will make it hard for the Repugs to steal the race, which is what they're out in force to do.

Yeah, but I still wish Barack had said: "Funny you should bring up Meg Whitman and eBay. Her former company just laid off 1600 people; 10% of their workforce. That is NOT the kind of model I would pick for the Treasury Secretary."

How I grade the debates
First presidential debate:
Obama - B
McCain - C
Vice presidential debate:
Biden - A
Palin - C-
Second presidential debate:
Obama- B+
McCain - B
McCain did a lot better tonight than he did in the first debate, but he still ended up behind Obama. In both debates, Obama seemed knowledgeable, steady, and presidential. McCain was less steady, less coherent in his answers, and in general a bit unfocused. McCain has been trying to portray himself as the person more fit for leadership, but Obama's superior steadiness and command of the issues in the debates makes Obama look like the candidate most ready for the presidency. The vice presidential candidates intensify the contrast, with Biden in perfect control and Palin looking like a train about to fly off the tracks.

No. There were times when Obama could have crushed McCain and didn't because he opted for a longer and more convoluted explanation rather than bringing the hammer down on the opening of his answer.

And also, and don't ask me how you do it, Obama has to take McCain down on all his bogus math. Somehow, in plain words, he has to explain basic economics to the American people.
It seems like Republicans can always get away with saying "my opponent will raise your taxes" and the Dem will almost accede by launching into a long-winded explanation of his/her tax plan, without ever getting around to saying "No, that ain't true. You are the pampered husband of a beer heiress. You're perspective on the needs of the average American leaves much to be desired.
But it really happened with healthcare: somebody needs to tell this McCain fella that the only health insurance I can get for my family for 5000 bucks a year involves eating peyote in the desert with a shaman for two weeks. I tried this and it does nothing for Jimmy's sniffle.

Let me dissent a bit. On MSNBC, they were saying McCain's mortgage proposal would cost only $300 billion, not trillions. If that were true (and no economists have estimated it yet, that I know of), why isn't it a better proposal than the original bailout? And might it not be attractive to folks in the middle?
On this date in 2000, Gore was up 11 points. We aren't out of the woods yet.

I found this which shows Bush ahead by 8%, dated October 9,2000.

I got on Lexis-Nexis and searched for Gallup poll on October 7. Gallup had Gore up by 10. Thanks for the info that there were other results out there.

I agree, MJ. I was frustrated with the first O-M debate, and pleased that the polls suggested O did well.
But I think this was an epic, epochal, ass-whupping. I thought Obama was virtually perfect, whereas McCain was whiny, mean, small, and off key.
Obama didn't need to deliver a whupping tonight, in McCain's vaunted "town hall" format. But he sure delivered one.

So why only a B+ to McCain's B? On the basis of your own words (not mine) I would say Obama B+, McCain C.
On top of that you analysis only goes mostly the talking points. There is a lot more in a debate that just talking points. There is demeanor, body language, that ineluctable thing called "being presidential." On this basis I would rate Obama B+, McCain D
