And Now, With Gusto!...
Drill, baby, drill!
Among the many catchphrases, this one really makes my ears bleed. Lucky for us, reader Gary Cohen provides us with this nugget of information, which clarifies the issue of drilling in the Arctic Refuge, and demonstrates--for the one guzillionth time--Gov. Palin's slippery verbiage.
(If you're looking for one, here's a source to back up Cohen's point.)
I also want to call attention to this small post by reader, Aatos, for fear that it get lost in the archives too soon. It asks a very pressing question-- one that everyone should be considering, not simply with respect to the McCain/Palin ticket, but Obama/Biden as well.

About 6 or 8 weeks ago all you heard from the Republicans was: "drill, drill, drill." The put on a dog and pony show and stayed in DC when Congress adjourned, bloviating daily on Energy and drilling. Their Convention features people in hardhats with the word "Drill" printed on them and
they broke into a chant of "Drill, drill, drill..." We had to drill to get the price of oil and gas down!
On July 11, oil was going for $147.27 a barrel.
The new hurricane season hit and rigs were shut down in the Gulf, and no new drilling has been announced in the last two months. Yet, on September 15, oil had dropped to $95.71 per barrel. A drop of $52.00.
How did this happen with no new drilling and rigs in the Gulf being shut down?

It happened because John McCain went to all of his friends, the heads of state all over the world, and using his superb persuasive skills, got them to drop the price as a favor to him. Sarah Palin was at his side to add more gravitas to John's requests.
OR: Perhaps the price of oil, a world commodity, is affected by many conflicting things, from fears about the future, to rumors of lower cost oil coming soon, to speculators, etc. Nope, sorry, I got carried away there. Nothing could be that simple.

hoppy,
hmmmm, now that's a poser, do I believe the first paragraph or the second?
The pipeline needed to transport the oil might cross 1,000 miles, but the Repugs don't count it as affecting 1,000 miles, they count the number of 'one foot square' supports sitting on the ground and supporting the pipe. So, 1,000 miles now becomes 1,000 yards.

the lower cost of oil could also have something to do with U.S. decreased consumption--and a fear that the decrease would continue.
Remember, we consume 25% of the world's oil.
And our own Department of Defense is the largest oil purchaser.
