Lincoln Chafee Refers to Sarah Palin as a "Cocky Whacko"

user-pic

Lincoln Chafee was one of my favorite moderates in the U.S. Senate. His common sense progressive realism in foreign affairs was essential during the battle over John Bolton's confirmation. Unlike a number of others who sought higher national office, Chafee voted against the Iraq War Resolution.

I think that now that he has become a political Independent and quit the Republican Party (he told me that he has always voted Republican in every race until 2008 though he said that he wrote in George H.W. Bush in the 2004 presidential race), Chafee is well-positioned to serve in an Obama cabinet or to run as an Independent for the governorship of Rhode Island. I would support him on both fronts.

However, Chafee added a bit of color to his profile yesterday and in a very lucid, lay it all out there talk at the New America Foundation about how he was let down substantively and politically by Bush/Cheney, he expressed some strong views about Sarah Palin.

On the front page of Roll Call's "Heard on the Hill" column, Emily Heil and Elizabeth Brotherton write:

He Said What? Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee is know for being a friendly, mild-mannered guy. But the Republican-turned-Independent's good nature isn't because he lacks the tough-talk ammo, as he proved Tuesday while promoting his latest book, "Against the Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President," at the New America Foundation.

Chafee (a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama) was discussing how GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech at the recent Republican National Convention energized the party's base. While he said it was impressive, Chafee thinks the Alaska governor also energized the left, as Democrats were outraged "to see this cocky whacko up there."

Chafee's comment drew gasps from the audience, who apparently were not expecting to hear such relatively feisty language from the normally genteel former Senator. It even shocked event moderator Steve Clemons, who responded, "Did you just say 'cocky whacko'?"

Chafee just smiled.

Chafee's comments on Palin appear at about 53:00 in this video clip. I also do a shorter clip of six minutes here in which Chafee says of Palin, "she is dangerous for the future of the country" -- and explains why.

Wow - A politician saying what he really thinks - unfiltered, uncensored - I feel a thrill running down my leg.....

He's not running for anything. He can say what he wants without fear of recourse.

"Cocky whacko?" If nothing else, that should wake up the 'undecided' - that's exactly what is presently inhabiting the Oval Orifice, sorry, office - I keep forgetting Bill's no longer there.

Cocky wacko extremist would be a little more accurate.

Proud ignorant might explain her better

Proud, lipstick wearing, ignorant pitbull

Chafee was a Republican I respected and its too bad that one like him lost his seat but we still have so many of the dregs, like Cornyn, Inhof, Kyl, Graham, Chambliss, etc.

"Lincoln Chafee was one of my favorite moderates in the U.S. Senate."

Well, Paul Krugman put it best not so long ago when he wrote "Yesterday's conservative is today's moderate."

I too admired Senator Chafee. While of course it was immensely gratifying for me when the Dems took back both the House and Senate in '06, I couldn't help but lament the fact that some fine Republicans were voted out of office; e.g. Senator Chaffee and Rep. Jim Leach in the House. Hopefully the time will come when the term 'Republican moderate' no longer is a seeming oxymoron.

My thought exactly. I was shocked and saddened to see *real* conservatives like Chaffee were punished for the failed policy of those neocon rightwing nutjobs. I'm glad he comes out and tell it as it is.

Cocky whacko or wacky crocko. Either way works for me.

THE REPRISE

Go now,
Don’t look back we've drawn the line,
Move on,
Its no good to go back in time,
We’ll never choose a frozen Maverick like you,
For happy endings we won’t be fooled,
With Obama and Biden,
Our dreams will come true

(Chorus)

Sarah, Sarah,
Change is brewing in our eyes,
Sarah,Sarah,
Anytime time is a good time for goodbye!

I've said elsewhere and I always get resistance to it, but my feeling and putting a lot of little things together, my growing conviction, is that there are a lot of people like Chaffee, and not just in government, but influential people all over the country, who do not want Sarah Palin a 72-year-old-heartbeat from becoming CIC any more than we do.

I am becoming more and more convinced that this backlash that the media has started is not going to die down. I think the only "base" that got fired up on the Repug side was the fundie part and it is not that big. Sane people are just as disturbed on both sides of the political spectrum.

This is my prediction - she is going down in flames. Sarah Shooting Star. And McLame is going with her.

Before you take too much of what Chaffee says seriously you should know a little about the guy. Chaffee is more radically left than Biden. Chaffee has lived a lie his whole life. He was raised a spoiled brat and turned into an embarrassment for his father. He failed in every endeavor he ever attempted on his own and when his father had him appointed to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention he embarrassed his family with poor performance in the little office he held. . When his dad died in 1999 he was given a political favor out of pity and appointed by a Governor who mistakenly thought he was a republican to complete his dad's term in office. He did win the election for office in 2000 and served his ONLY elected term in office. Most people consider him a traitor and a liar in the state of Rhode Island. If you wish to rely on liars to provide you information you want to hear then go for it.

user-pic

Which, presumably, is exactly what anyone supporting McCain and Palin are choosing to do.

You say he is a traitor and a liar but offer no evidence to back it up except a series of ad hominems. Care to amend your post or do you prefer to be seen asjust another cheap-shot Republican?

Old fake E-6,

As your quadruple cousin, airgun 177, would say,
"Your inventing. Citation. "

You are a sock puppet, not a real person.

OldSarg,

99.9% of your post is opinion, which you're trying to sell as fact; and as usual,
it has no value to rational people. You might do better selling that story over on FreeRepublic.com
unless you alread did.

Contrary to what OldSarg said, Linc Chafee is pretty much revered in RI. A lot of people hated voting against him last time, but did so out of fear of adding to Republican strength in Congress.

I don't think you will find many "spoiled brats" who have earned a living as a blacksmith. And his Dad, also a decent honorable guy, was very proud of him.

OldSarg, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Oh, other errors - Chafee was elected to the Warwick city council and then Mayor of Warwick before he served in the Senate. So much for his "only elected term in office."

@Trudy
Thanks for setting record straight.

From another Chafee fan in RI, it was hard to see him have to leave office.

Don't you get it? They want you to attack Palin.

Ask DNC officials off the record. They are thinking ahead. They are thinking of Hillary in 2012...

A concern troll variant of sock puppet. The intellect of Young Republicans is on display.

My friends and I will allow President Obama to appoint Lincoln Chafee to any Cabinet position he wants, provided the responsibilities of that position have nothing to do with Iran, Israel, or any other country in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. The reason is no longer in the Senate is that he was insufficiently sensitive to Israel's legitimate security interests.

My friends and I will allow permit Chaffee to serve in an Obama Administration as long as he has no role at all in setting otr implementing policies as to Iran, Israel or any other country in the MPersian Gulf and Middle East. Otherwise his nomination will wither.

Gee, apacmember, thanks.

The reason [he]is no longer in the Senate is that he was insufficiently sensitive to Israel's legitimate security interests.

WOW, and here I thought it was a backlash against the Republicans in the White House, House and Senate.

ol dopey me.

No.

Senator Whitehouse got our support and it was crucial, because Chaffee stank on Israel.

user-pic

apacmember.

you're like the rooster who takes credit for the dawn.

JohnW feints, steps back, shoots, THREE POINTS!!!!

user-pic

zeno,

:-) thanks.

Oh puhleeze. You'd have to live in RI to really get it, but the names Chafee and Kennedy are a Shoo-in to any election. The fact that Linc DIDN'T win shows you exactly how inept he really is. The election, the office, the lifetime in the Senate was his to lose. And he did it handsomely didn't he??
Then, being the MAN that he is, does he take credit for his loss himself? Does he work from the inside to help straighten his party out? NOOOO!! He bails. He blames everyone except his perfect, righteous self. Then he really gets right off that high road that his Daddy, the well-respected, former Senator used to travel, and starts calling people gutter names.
Way to go Linc!!

OldSarg's sex change is complete!! Frankly, you were more believable as a person before the Atwater crew put lipstick on the sock puppet.
