VP Palin: A Pat Buchanan Supporter
Not only is she the least qualified candidate for national office in decades, not only is she virulently anti-choice and anti-environmentalist, she's a Pat Buchanan supporter.
At least with Joe Lieberman, Mc Cain could have picked up my Aunt fanny in Miami. Now she's voting for Obama!

"Not only is she the least qualified candidate for national office in decades, not only is she virulently anti-choice and anti-environmentalist, she's a Pat Buchanan supporter."
1) She has more executive experience than Obama.
2) She is Pro-Choice, just chooses life.
3) She knows more about environmental impact than you do about writing and deals with it on a daily basis as the governor of Alaska.
4) She is Pro-family as proven by 20 years of marriage and 5 kids.
5) Pro-American with Disability programs since she deals with it every day.
Look at the positive side of this. We are getting a new leader that truly loves the outdoors and making a positive difference in life.

She knows how to keep the oil income flowing while keeping the environmental questions on hold.
There are something like 5 billion mothers on the planet; raising children is not news, I've even done it myself.
Still, she not a reason to vote against (or for) McCain. That he is representing the GOP and abandoning his principles is sufficient to hope he goes down in flames. And remember your predictions in 2006.

Totally amusing. One of the only things that McCain had going for him is that he's not an idiot about immigration. And he picked a Buchananite as a running mate? Well, that neutralizes the reasonable views on immigration doesn't it? Pat thinks everybody should stay in their own countries. Except for the Irish in the early 20th century, of course.

Her "executive" experience is well documented in a possible abuse of power investigation against her. But then that's the Republican MO.

Yes, firing the head of the Department of Public Safety because he wouldn't get involved in divorce dispute by abusing his authority, then lying about it, then retreating in the face of a tape recording proving the lie, and then lying again by having a staff member fall on his sword is just too delicious.
However, this is not unprecedented. As Wasilla mayor, Palin fired the head of libraries and the police chief because she claimed they were not supporting her AS mayor. Turned out they were not supporting her FOR mayor and had endorsed her opponent. Maybe McCain is planning to put her in charge of US Attorneys. Seems like a good fit.

I'm chuckling listening to Pat right now. He says "She a pro-lifer! A gun lover!" They are funny when they get wound up. Per Pat she is also "a bright girl".

A bright girl huh?
Not when you want creationism taught alongside real peer, reviewed science so students don't know which to believe. The schools can't teach our children anything about the spread of disease or their cures because that information of those very breakthrough came from evolution. She does not sound very bright to me.
Maybe we just better pray she doesn't get into office. For our children's educational futures.

McCain's choice of Palin as a running mate changes nothing. A McCain administration will mean continued dependence on foreign oil, more people (including many children) with no health care, continued burdens being placed on American families, more lost US jobs as they continue to be shipped overseas, more tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of the rest of America, more global warming and environmental degradation, more lives of US troops lost in Iraq, more homeless US veterans who don't get the help they are entitled to when their service to country has ended and the continued decline of US influence across the globe. And a would-be VP Palin doesn't change one thing about how a McCain administration would do the nation's business...McCain/Palin 4 more years of the last 8.
And she is a Pat Buchanan fan too? Go figure, lol...
Glad to hear your aunt has made the correct choice MJ. :)

Well I never thought I'd be reduced to citing Charles Krauthammer, but hopefully he was spot on today in his Washington Post commentary...
"The Palin selection completely undercuts the argument about Obama's inexperience and readiness to lead -- on the theory that because Palin is a maverick and a corruption fighter, she bolsters McCain's claim to be the reformer in this campaign. In her rollout today, Palin spoke a lot about change. McCain is now trying to steal "change" from Obama, a contest McCain will lose in an overwhelmingly Democratic year with an overwhelmingly unpopular incumbent Republican administration. At the same time, he's weakening his strong suit -- readiness vs. unreadiness.
The McCain campaign is reveling in the fact that Palin is a game changer. But why a game changer when you’ve been gaining? To gratuitously undercut the remarkably successful "Is he ready to lead" line of attack seems near suicidal."
For once I actually hope he's right!

Republican Jews: Picking Palin as VP demonstrates McCain's good judgment
Palin on Israel
As the second article says Palin's record on Israel is thin...as would be expected of the Governor of Alaska. Nor does she seem to have been much of a Buchananite.
A decent person would wait on interviews, would give her time to clarify her positions, before publicly attacking her.
But Rosenberg is not a decent person. In fact, if there's anything scummier, it's not alive.

If McCain was elected can you imagine the temptation of wingnuts of all persuasions – anti-immigration, NRA extremists, the Christian right –to get rid of him to have one of their own in power?
She is Bush squared and just as deceptive because she hides it behind a skirt, a smile and a pretty face and is “authentic” to boot. No foreign policy experience? The neo-cons would fill in those blanks. This wouldn’t be Bush’s third term, it would be Cheney’s third term.
The longer you look into it the scarier she becomes.

Sarah Palin could easily end up looking like a "deer in headlights" when she goes up against Sen Biden in the V.P. debates. The smart thing for Biden to do is to let Palin make her own "unforced" errors. That way, Biden can't be accused of being a misogynist. But then again, Sara could be really thinking….aren’t ALL men sexist pigs and deserve to be kicked in the ballz with their hands tied behind their backs and better yet, having the personal pleasure of hitting a man below the belt, especially if it’s the Presidential Nominee of the Democratic Party.

Re the Debate --- Thank God it's Joe Biden. He is one of the few people I can think of who would have a chance at walking that fine, fine line between appearing to bully her and appearing to patronizing her. I'm sure it's not what he would prefer to do (he was probably drooling at the idea of taking on the Mittster)
Re Buchanan ---- I think I still have it on my TiVo, but he was on Morning Joe this a.m. as word was coming in that it wasn't Pawlenty, then rumor that a plane had gone from Alaska to Dayton, and so on. Every time one of the logicals got ruled out, they would speculate on who was left and likely. And because of that plane everytime there was a further development her name would come up .... and get shot down ... by all ... including Pat!! VERY unfortunately, my taping stopped before the official word came, so I don't know what his or the others' immediate reaction was. And of course by this evening she's the best thing since sliced bread according to Pat. But it's a "conversion" that is little more than 12 hours old.

Interesting contrast, isn't it, between Obama, citoyen du monde, and Palin, the girl next door? In a typical election year, I'd put my money on the local gal, but after eight years of Bush, I think Americans are looking for a leadership team that will garner greater respect around the world. But with the addition of Palin, the Republican ticket looks especially provincial, I think--and even more so when contrasted with the cosmopolitan feel of Obama-Biden. The spunky, homey Palin has her charms--and doubtlessly will win her share of voters--but I think she'll make the Republican ticket look less appealing in world capitals and, for once, the opinions of the rest of the world will actually matter to American voters this year. Because of this, the Palin pick will likely hurt McCain.

"Looking for leadership that will garner greater respect around the world?" No, Americans don't look for world opinions. They look in their own yards at their own kids and wonder, "who will protect my family?" Looks to be an easy choice. A fighter pilot and a hunter with a 7mm rifle or a metro-sexual and a lifetime politician? Humm......let me see? Good looking, smart and a proven Hero partner or Big eared and Artificial hair? Hummm.......Knowledge of the wilderness and combat experience or radical terrorist bomber friends and an guy no one likes...Hummmm.....

Has it occurred to anyone that McCain picked Palin knowing full well she'd create a hoohah, and that she's implode before the convention?
Why aren't we talking about Obama? He didn't even get 24 hours after the speech of a century? hmm If McCain had announced some boring old white guy we'd be talking about Obama.
Why is the GOP steering the conversation towards a completely unsuitable choice for VP. Why are TPMers wasting time justifying that choice? We should be questioning his sanity.
If Palin makes it to the convention. I'll be surprised.
McCains doing a bit of effective clock management, if you ask me.

Wow, kyou completely read my mind... I was thinking all day that this was the splash he needed to get Obama's speech covered up. At least I was happy to see the headlines in the papers were great from Obama this morning, so the less focused who just glance at the news stands will get the right idea. But those of us who read the internet and watch tv... forget about it. And someone else mentioned to me he might know the Palin thing will fall apart the before the convention. I sort of home it doesn't though.... would be nice if it somehow fell apart closer to the election.
In the meantime, I am going to scream if I see one more person call being Mayor of 6,000 people "executive experience." I am guessing if she had been president of the student council in HS that would count too?

picking Palin was sheer political genius, and the Dems are having a major sour grapes moment.
and I agree with Sarg: Americans really don't care what "world capitals" think of us. sure, we want to be liked and admired, but if Europe wants to look down on us, well, screw'em. this is something the Democrats just don't seem to understand.

Sour grapes? Nawwww...
Nope at first I was confused. I thought that McCain was making a play for centrist women voters. Then when I found out about her positions I realized that when America also gets to know her she will be a big hit with the 'Praise the Lord' crowd...and that's about it.

Before we christen the pick as "genius" we'll have to see how Palin holds up on the campaign trail. She's completely untested in a national arena. She may do well or she may flop completely. Lots of comparisons have been made with Quayle. She may turn out to be even worse--more like James Stockdale (Perot's choice who crashed and burned disasterously in the VP debate). Or she could be great. She seems charming enough, but in sound clips she also doesn't sound very articulate or knowledgeable. I know folksy inarticulateness often appeals to Americans, but this was a lot of Bush's appeal--and it seems a lot less appealing now after witnessing Bush's incompetence.
And while Americans often act as if the rest of the world doesn't matter, I'm hearing different sentiments when I talk to people this year. Americans are not quite the rubes we sometimes assume. A lot of us are more sophisticated and cosmopolitan than the stereotypes suggest. America isn't all Podunk. It's also New York, Chicago, LA, and San Francisco.

Do the Repugnant Ones have an Elmer Gantry tent revival (or "rivalry," as one of my brother's football buddies used to call them) sometime next week? Oh, my. I do think I'll pass on paying any attention to that medieval, feudalist crap.
With the reactionary Republicans having anything whatsoever to with the American government, it becomes harder and harder to take America seriously as a "modern" nation. So here we go again with Michael Brown and Harriet Meiers all rolled into yet one more Republican non-entity. It sure does look like one more "heck of a job, Grandpa John," to me.

Well not all Americans are looking for the same thing. After eight years of Bush, though, a lot of Americans are looking for competence in managing both domestic affairs (Katrina) and international relations (Iraq). Sarg may vote for the pretty girl who shoots straight, but there are a bunch of us Americans who are actually looking for a competent President (and wilderness skills aren't really what we're thinking of when we think about Presidential competence).
That said, as someone whose passions are fishing and hunting (and pretty girls, too), I understand what Sarg likes about Palin. And I know she'll play well in small-town America.
As I said before, the Palin pick sets up some interesting contrasts: Citoyen du monde or girl next door? Most years, I'd agree with Sarge and bet that girl next door wins. This year is different though, since Bush has exposed the dangers of an unsophisticated, unprepared leader.

I don't think she'll play in suburban America and that is where Democrats are going to win this election.
Let's get on the offensive here folks and elitely sell our strengths as the smart, forward looking, future oriented people who know that our children's future does not depend on their ability to skin caribou and catch fish but in their ability to excel at science and math.

Buchanan was slimed by association and now you are trying to slime Palin by association with someone slimed by association. And yet you argued that guilt by association (the Obama in church with Farrakhan canard) is patently wrong-headed fear mongering.
You don't specify what views of Buchanan's she backs. You back candidates some of whose views you don't agree with. It's nearly inevitable or else you'd back no one. And yet you imply that she holds Buchanan's views but don't say which ones other than pro-life.
I suspect the pro-life view is the key to her support for Buchanan.
I'm not so sure the virulent insistence on terminating unborn human beings as an act of angry political protest for lack of equal pay and the glass cieling issues is a very Judaic ethos at its heart. Whacking the defenseless and innocent to express anger at one's percieved oppressors is a policy of bitterness and revenge masked as "choice." It's hostage taking and killing of innocent lives. Many Palestinians do it because they have an "unwanted neighbor" and most say couples abort because of an "unwanted pregnancy." However, if you risk something, are related to something, and then disclaim responsibility for it, the fact you don't "want" it is irrelevant to your responsibility for "it."

This person was not the choice of McCain. This needs to be exposed to the max. The Republican party has been taken over by political hacks like Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh. McCain did not pick this person. This is the choice of the far right. This is to shore up the so called base of the party. No matter WHO it is. John McCain is not in charge of his own party--by a longshot. He cannot call the shots during and after the convention, either, because he allegedly picked Palin. The right wing of the Republican Party is calling the shots. McCain is powerless against them.
