New Obama Music Video To Kick Off Weekend
And it's a reminder of what this is all about. No matter who the VP is, this is the most important election of our lives (not just just the lives of the 20 somethings but even the 80 somethings.
Those of us who lived through the 60's are hardwired to expect the worst and to believe that, in the end, the reactionary geezer will win.
But who would have thought Barack Obama would have gotten this far? Not me. But it sure is a privilege to be part of it.

Hate to say it, but that video is sad.

I just think it's really nice to see our representatives in Hollywood backing Obama. I mean at least "they" understand how important it is to protect women's rights to partial abortion, gay rights and all the truths we hold so close to our secular hearts.

I liked it, but I was reminded of Tom Lehrer's line from We are the Folk Song Army he won all the battles but we had all the best songs.
We are the Folk Song Army.
Everyone of us cares.
We all hate poverty, war, and injustice,
Unlike the rest of you squares.
There are innocuous folk songs.
Yeah, but we regard 'em with scorn.
The folks who sing 'em have no social conscience.
Why they don't even care if Jimmy Crack Corn.
If you feel dissatisfaction,
Strum your frustrations away.
Some people may prefer action,
But give me a folk song any old day.
The tune don't have to be clever,
And it don't matter if you put a coupla extra syllables into a line.
It sounds more ethnic if it ain't good English,
And it don't even gotta rhyme--excuse me--rhyne.
Remember the war against Franco?
That's the kind where each of us belongs.
Though he may have won all the battles,
We had all the good songs.
So join in the Folk Song Army,
Guitars are the weapons we bring
To the fight against poverty, war, and injustice.
Ready! Aim! Sing!

As a victim/veteran of the Nixon-Kissinger Fig Leaf Contingent (Vietnam (1970-1972), I always appreciated Tom Lehrer's explanation as to why he quit comic show business and returned to teaching in academia. Said he, as a matter of fact in America:
"All comedy died the day Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize."
Still poetry and song do have honored places in our -- usually losing -- struggles against corporate crypto-fascism in America; so a few years ago, as therapy during yet another lemming stampede, I started composing my own veteran-inspired polemic verse, such as:
"Bring Home the Buy Time Brigade"
The Buy Time Brigade is busted
It's run out of money and luck
The guy at the top can't be trusted
Because he does not give a fuck
He starts with his missions accomplished
After which he unravels the gain
Then with no rock unthrown or dirt un-dished
He covers up losses and pain
Commanding, Commandments, commanded:
He's fallen in love with command
Stone deaf to how he's been backhanded
By voters and their reprimand
The people don't like what he's doing
They've told him both time and again
They're tired of his endless pooch-screwing
They want the war over by ten
That's minutes, or hours, or bedtime
That doesn't mean weeks, months, or years
For those who don't listen, it's dead time
Like getting tossed out on their ears
The blood and the billions have vanished
It's time for the twerp to atone
To Dante's tenth level he's banished
A new low for just him alone
Or maybe Dick Cheney will join him
To smirk at his armpit and sneer
Which Dubya will take as a coin hymn
A chant to make money and cheer
The Fig Leaf Contingent from Asia
Has come back again to be heard:
"Fuck him and his fucked-up Fantasia!
No Lyndon Baines Bush: Texas turd!"
And no more from old Tricky Dickies
Those Kissingers, Nixons, and Fords
The vampires who left us with hickeys
From bleeding our necks for their gourds
Just cut off the money and maybes
Just quit all the stalling for time
We don't need these rats with their rabies
To rob us of our last thin dime
The Buy Time Brigade has no reason
Except to die fighting for zilch
To parasites we're open season:
Our pockets and veins they will filch
Their greed knows no limits too hyper
Yet before all our regiments fade
It's past time to pay off the piper
And bring home the Buy Time Brigade
Michael Murry, “The Misfortune Teller,” Copyright 2006
Not up to Tom Leher's standards, no doubt, but sort of like Groucho Marx would have said: "Those are my [syllables]. If you don't like them, I have others."

......growing up in the late 1970s, I would score the lyrics an A+, the video B+; the only contrary thing would be the MLK cameo (I think if Obama does become POTUS, I think that would say more about our society (given its history) than may be what it would say about Obama, wouldn't you think)
Here's my favorite: “You’re the best”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0F9sZeESus
And may be too we're all sick of hearing about V.P. speculations by now…....but it's also been a slow news day, having both candidates' schedule today, blank........so, I will revert back with my original prediction (& hope) of Sen Evan Bayh for these reasons: Sen Bayh is also about the future; he can air-brush over his Iraq vote and has foreign policy creds; offers a more conservative counter balance to Obama's liberal propensities; and Sen Bayh & his family make for a darn good photo opportunity...

LMAO! as they say.
I made it to 2:21 before I had to turn it off. I'm sorry: what group of voters that Obama does not already have in his pocket is this supposed to appeal to? I see MJ's got that "Matthews tingle" going up his leg, but I don't think the independents, PUMAs, undecided evangelicals, Catholics, or older white men are going to be terribly impressed.

You're right, gretz, that this is not going to make any gains in the group of voters that Obama doesn't already have 'in his pocket' -- But, you know what? We don't need them in his pocket. We need them in the voting booth pulling the lever next to his name!
And thanks in part, to McCain's slimy tactics -- and in part to the PUMA fanatics (who are proving to some that women aren't ready to play 'grown up' games) -- and in part to the *savaging* of Obama over the FISA vote from a lot of people the young voters were looking up to ...... there is a real need for some attention to that segment: a group so potentially large it COULD offset those PUMAs and evangelicals and, yes, the racists.
And frankly some of us who are older (okay, OLD) and still a bit idealistic need a reminder like this every once in a while too. As M.J. said, "Those of us who lived through the 60's are hardwired to expect the worst and to believe that, in the end, the reactionary geezer will win." Something like this gives me a bit of fuel and determination, too.
(So ..... I signed up to be out of work a few days in November and am headed off to PA to do some work where it might make a difference!)
We can't let the Reps. and their "celebrity" ads chase away the special message and feeling that Obama has brought to people who have felt powerless -- those who want real, legitimate change for the better.

Dislike it immensely. Kinda creepy cultist folks swaying to and fro/back and forth praising their "leader."
I don't think Barack wanted or anticipated this kind of crap. Creeps me out.

I have to agree. I hated it. Not even in the same league as other videos. Too long, too corny (what is with Barry Manilow just swaying to the camera?). Pam Anderson and Perez Hilton? Seriously? I am reminded of a line from season six of the West Wing where one of the Vinnick strategists remarks that the rest of the country thinks that California is a great big psycho ward. Terrible. The marketing agency for Nike should make an Obama video. And they should have used that Marvin Gaye footage for him, not for the basketball team.

....earlier this evening, it was reported by George Stephanopolus of ABC News that Sen Biden for the last 17 years has taught a Saturday class at a Delaware University (and has never missed those Saturday lectures), but it was announced by the school that students attending tomorrow's class may get a substitute instructor.... plus....... "have noticed a private NetJets flight that was dispatched from Chicago Midway to ....Delaware (New Castle, not Wilmington) that arrived a little past 7:30 PM Eastern." blogged from political-buzz.com
....am disappointed but guess it could have been worse. Delaware is a good place to incorporate if you want to limit your company's tax liabilities. ...Biden's selection helps shore up the three areas of Obama's perceived weaknesses: 1) years of experience in Washington; 2) strong foreign policy credentials; and 3) has solid working class roots from Pennsylvania.

cute, Elizabeth2...but in his pocket or in the voting booth, this video ain't gonna do it.
as for "the Reps and their celebrity ads," I'd say they don't need to do another one, since Obama's campaign is kinda doing it for them.
I too am old, I also lived thru the '60s, even worked on the McGovern campaign. idealism and kumbaya didn't work for Dems then, and it isn't going to now.
if what pol360 says is true, that's great. Biden joining the ticket would be one of the few smart things the Obama campaign has done recently, in terms of actually trying to WIN the election. but Forest Whittaker swaying back and forth to His Master's Voice is not the way to go.

All I know is that if you make the obvious comparison with the will i am "Yes We Can" video, you can't help but notice this one is about seven notches down on the cool-o-meter. Whoopi Goldberg? Barry Manilow??? Jason Alexander????? Seeing Jason Alexander get all soulful makes this look like a Seinfeld show parody of an Obama video, not the real thing.

But Obama needs a big tent to win, so far be it from me to deny any demographic their own Obama video.

Gotcha! I worked on the JFK campaign! (Granted I was too young to vote but had an 'official' job nevertheless.) ------------- Agree with you wholeheartedly about Biden. Could not be happier! Takes a big person to have another big person beside them. And sends the most important message: honesty and competence.
And as for the video, it's not going to hurt (those buying the celebrity idea are already sold) and judging by the reaction of some of us, it will motivate/re-energize some. Every arrow in the quivver.

It's a sweet, albeit corny, video. Is it really helpful to have Barry Manilow and Cyndi Lauper campaigning for you? As far the ancient senior citizen vote is concerned, Manilow might not hurt.
The idea of Moses not making it to the Promised Land... that is deeply affecting for those steeped both in the Judaeo-Christian-Islamic tradition and the civil rights movement... it seems imperative for Obama to link his campaign to these broader themes of redemption without falling into a sort of hokey exploitation of MLK. The video does lay bare exactly those greater historical issues that are at stake in this election.

The repugnant ones think they can make a negative image of thousands of people showing up to see someone they support or admire in huge sports stadiums or NASCAR racetracks? That should surely come as a surprise to all the thousands of Joe-Sixpack sports fans who regularly fill those stadiums built just for them and their "cults." I swear, if Barack Obama and the Democrats don't turn Panama John and the Geriatric Old Poops into hotdogs-and-beer-hating elitists over this stupid concept, then America really has become too stupid to stipulate?
I mean, anyone care to have a beer with a privileged draft-dodging Connecticut/Texas Yale-alumni princeling who swears he doesn't drink alcoholic beverages?

JOE BIDEN IS MY KIND OF GUY
HE'LL HELP BARACK MAKE MCCAIN CRY
HE KNOWS THE VALUE OF ISRAEL TO US
THOSE OF YOU DON'T LIKE IT-- CAN SUCK PUSS
Jewish Daily Forward, March, 2007:
Delaware Senator Joseph Biden rejected the notion that the U.S. needs to become a more neutral player in the Middle East, while criticizing the White House as uninvolved and ineffective. He spoke to the Forward for 45 minutes over oatmeal at Manhattan’s Regency Hotel yesterday morning,
“In my 34 year career, I have never wavered from the notion that the only time progress has ever been made in the Middle East is when the Arab nations have known that there is no daylight between us and Israel,” said Biden, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations committee. “So the idea of being an ‘honest broker’ is not, I think, like some of my Democratic colleagues call for, is not the answer. It is being the smart broker, it is being the smart partner.”
Biden, a dark-horse Democratic presidential contender known for straight talk (and the occassional gaffe), has long been a strong supporter of Israel in Congress and is now aggressively courting Jewish voters and donors for his 2008 bid. The debate over the U.S.-Israel relationship, meanwhile, has reached a fevered pitch in the wake of last week’s Washington conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee: On Sunday, New York Times columnist Nick Krisof published an op-ed in the paper that argued that the country lacks a serious debate over Israel, and needs to back away from its “crushing embrace” of Israeli hardliners.
Biden argued that the U.S. doesn’t need more distance, but does need to become a more effective, proactive partner for peace.
“We contract our foreign policy, and that is a dangerous situation,” Biden said. “Do you think there’s any reasonable prospect that the Saudis are going to push Hamas to recognize Israel? So now we have a quote unity government and we’re going, ‘Oh my goodness, we have a problem.’”

ok liz2, you win the oldness contest!
adding Biden to the ticket is going to change everything for me and, I suspect, a lot of other former Hillary supporters (actually I was a Biden supporter first, so I'm kind of delighted).
how can a lifetime Washington insider run on a ticket with the Change Guy? I guess that's a question for another thread ;-)

I don't live in either Israel or America; I don't subscribe to any variety of Single Spook Animism; and therefore I don't give a shit what happens to Israel. Neither will a significant number of Americans once it becomes blindingly clear to them what knee-jerk support of crusading Apartheid Zionism has cost the United States. Still, since I only care to see Social Security last for the remaining few decades of my dwindling lifetime, I'll vote for the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I have no illusions that my vote will help accomplish anything else of value.
Still, if by some miracle, President Obama gets our "stalwart ally" Israel to deploy its own military at its own expense to Iraq and Afghanistan so that we Americans can withdraw our vaunted Visigoths and stop feeding the Warfare Welfare and Makework Militarism that has ruined us, then perhaps I'll see a real change and possibly believe in it. Otherwise, I only see Barack Obama changing into yet another Republican-Lite clone of the Bawl and Pillory Horror Picture Show, only without the blowjobs. A predictable and predicted change like that, I have no problem whatsoever believing.
