McCain Refuses to Endorse Likely GOP Nominee

user-pic

Rooters, July 30- Senator John McCain (R.- Ariz.), the political maverick and 2000 Presidential candidate, today refused to endorse the candidacy of presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain, citing "stark differences" between their views.

"My friends, I don't even recognize this man," said McCain, speaking to a group of reporters on his famed "Straight Talk Express." "He's proposing more of the disastrous Bush tax cuts, he's opposing affirmative action, he's caving to the lunatic wing of his party on immigration and abortion. Honestly, it boggles the mind. He's even done a complete 180 and come out in support of torture- now tell me, seriously, does that sound like something I'd do? Not to speak of his dangerous new 'cut and run' policy in Iraq. I'm telling you, my friends, this man is not to be trusted anywhere near the Presidency."

Much of official Washington was stunned by the announcement, which represents the first time a major-party candidate has refused to endorse his own presidential campaign since Alf Landon's famous "Hell, I wouldn't vote for me either" speech of 1936.

But around the country, voters seemed to welcome the news. "That's exactly the kind of honesty and integrity I've come to expect from John McCain," said Ron Fournier of Heartland, Iowa, who described himself as a "fiercely independent" voter. "Ordinary politicians would just line up behind the likely nominee, mute their personal misgivings, and doubletalk you to death. McCain's not like that. Only John McCain has the common sense to see that this McCain guy would be a complete train wreck as President."

Leading Democrats were unsure of how to handle the unexpected development, which one campaign official for Sen. Barack Obama (D.- Ill.) called a "game changer." "Frankly, this throws a monkey wrench into all our plans," said the staffer. "We had hoped to run against John McCain's record, and we were going to call his judgment into question. But if McCain's already doing that, I don't see how we can possibly take that ground away from him."

At the Republican National Committee, however, party officials seemed unperturbed by McCain's refusal to endorse the likely nominee. "That's just John being John," said a high-ranking RNC officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he fears the wrath of McCain's legendary temper. "We're not worried much. We expect that by this time next week, he'll have changed his mind, and he'll be right back on the McCain bandwagon."

What a perfect ad! I'm sure there's footage of McCain saying all those negative things, and just superimpose it with the changing stances that you brought up.

I would also want the famous quote about evangelicals followed up with his embrace of Falwell in there too.

What a sleaze he has become!

Could also use the point where McCain was against the Rovian smear tactics when used against him in 2000 and against buddy Kerry in 2004, but now if happily embracing the tactic.

There is a killer ad/vid to be made here where pre-2008 Presidential McCain debates current McCain.

user-pic

Yeah, would the killer ad/vid people step up here? I'm just a humble wordmonger, myself.

user-pic

It always brings tears to my eyes when someone displays such humility.

user-pic

Well, I'm proud to say that I once had a very humble blog. But I'm not arrogant about it, like some people.

I'm just waiting for the new John McCain to start circulating rumors that Barack Obama fathered a white baby!

user-pic

They'd never do that. There's nothing wrong with fathering a white baby, is there?

They'd get much better traction with rumors that Obama fathered a black baby...

Come on codegen86. Don't make me explain my own jokes. You see, Barack is a black man. He could never father a white baby. Any baby he has will be a black baby, in this country.

One person is part African-American, part-Caucasian, and part Native American.

The other person is Thai, with a bit of Chinese.

They get together, marry, and have a son.

Only in America is that son considered African-American.

Maine and Vermont just pm'd with word that Bérubé's no Alf Landon. Apparently, they knew the man.

Both ME and VT also mentioned something about pollster.com and how there's no accounting for kids these days.

What, are people accusing me of making things up? How distasteful.

Jeebus if this Bérubé fellow doesn't think we're all a bunch of rubes ...

Please take your Matt Stoller/Greg Sargent antics elsewhere ... we're runnin' a serious blog here.

Been there, done that. Next.

Where's Josh when you need him?

Another Democratic source, who I requested remain anonymous because no-one likes to cite an 0-8 political consultant with initials BS, called this a tactical masterstroke.

"Lack of charisma is killing McCain. So McCain says, boom, here's my alter ego. Brilliant. It's like he just doubled-down and said hey, deal with charisma-squared, Mr Hope-Changer!"

"Now, Axelrod, the new challenge for him is to make sure the underlings don't bring up the geriatric schizo question - unless of course that polls well with focus groups. I don't know, not something I have studied much, but my guess is beating up on the mentally ill might deliver Texas but lose you all of New England."

Area man surprised to hear McCain still alive.

I am a maverick and so am I. I love the verbal incontinence so vividly expressed by the GOP's presumptive "Depender in Chief".

-Is that the same Ron Fournier of McCain
ass-plug fame?

Ehhhhhh . . . could be!
