Nothing to Fear But a Lack of Fear Itself

Arianna is right that "It wasn't elected officials who led the struggle for civil rights or the drive for women's rights or the fight to end the war in Vietnam or the war in Iraq - it was the people." More specifically, it was the people making politicians more scared to support the status quo than to support change.

Yes, we're back to the concept of fear - and how to make it work for positive ends.

Progressives too often assume - probably because we are optimists - that Democrats will do the right thing if they just have power. We want to believe - even as Democratic politicians have undermined our hopes time and time again, whether it was Bill Clinton ramming NAFTA through Congress, or congressional Democrats giving the most unpopular president in history blank checks for the most unpopular war in history.

But that's not how political power works.

Politicians react to fear - fear of being thrown out of office. And so fear is the fuel of change. If we want real change - if we want Democrats to stand up on the war - we have to make them fear for their jobs if they continue supporting the war.

Ned Lamont proved this thesis. When he defeated Joe Lieberman in the 2006 Connecticut Democratic primary, he made every other Democratic incumbent afraid - and suddenly, more Democrats started echoing Lamont's strong antiwar messages. It was a big change.

Of course, many of these same Democrats have continued supporting the war through their votes. And so that means we have to ramp up the accountability machine. We have to make Democrats fear for their jobs should they keep supporting this war. To put it in FDR terms, for those of us who want an end to this war, we have nothing to fear but a lack of fear itself.

I'm glad someone gets it. When the idiots in the press were arguing over whether MLK or LBJ was most important in the fight for civil rights, I was screaming, "It's NEITHER, you morons!"

Sometimes people want us to forget who really has the power in this country. The fact that Obama remembers is the reason I support him.

How have we putting this theory into practice lately? Too many Blue Dogs are banking on coasting into re-election while the base focuses on the presidential campaign. I think we should be going after the likes of Dan Boren and Tim Mahoney. Especially in a presidential election year, an insurgent primary campaign would send a loud message that we're not content just to have titular Democrats tipping the balance in Congress. The illusion of change is more dangerous than no change at all.

we have to ramp up the accountability machine.

Bill Scheurer used to have a marvelous scorecard on Reps and Senators at his Peace Majority Report website. Bill was a genius on it. It calculated a numerical percentage "Peace Rating" for each member based on their up-or-down votes on military matters, including budgets. Needless to say, with a few exceptions most of the ratings were low. Unfortunately Bill, from the reports I get, lacked the resources to continue this extremely useful yardstick for holding politicians accountable. It's no longer available. I haven't discussed this with Bill, so I don't know the details.

I know nothing about fund-raising. Any thoughts? Has anybody else seen these ratings when they were alive? Do you agree with me that this sort of scorecard is essential for accountability and informed voting decisions?

Agree totally. It would need to be a lot more viewership though by Huff Post or TPM or Kos posting it.

David: My question is, Matt Lauer, in his interview with John McCain, said it appears the surge is working and McCain said, yes it is, anyone on the ground there knows that. This whole concept bothers me, that the surge is working. I believe the more likely reasoning is that Sadr called a cease fire on his militants while talks are in progress. Once he again calls for raising arms against American soldiers and contractors, as he is threatening to do, I believe we will again see many more Americans die. Four did just today in fact.

So, my question is, can we say the surge is working or that the truth is Sadr let it work for a few brief months?

Thank you.

Correction, the four soldiers were in Afghanistan.

When the next celebrity pundit says "the surge is working" I wish our side would say "Working? If it's working, we should be able to bring our troops home and save $2B a week in Iraq. How is spending $2B a week in Iraq working to the benefit of any American that you know? Don't you think that tripling (or whatever) the amount of money we spend on cancer research would save more American lives than the war in Iraq? Anybody in your family die from cancer? Did you know we've cut funding for medical research to fund the war?"

well, the surge was working (maybe)

then Moqtada al Sadr decided to declare war against us again

the truce is off

it's gonna be a bloody summer in Baghdad

oh, and that Status of Force agreement that george wanted so bad, it;s a dead issue now

I'm a bit angry that Arianna allowed Amity Shlaes to get away with some of the banalities she uttered on her radio show on Pacifica, Left, Right and Center.

Matt Miller, what a numb nuts. A Bill Clinton style rat if I ever saw one.

Right on, Mr. Sirota.

We have the power to keep replacing 'em until we get the right ones in place. That is why I feel we don't need term limits. Blue Dogs are a problem though...they were put there by their voters for exactly that reason.

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'.
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And know that it's for real,
The hour when the ship comes in.

Then they'll raise their hands,
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh's tribe,
They'll be drownded in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.

- from When the Ship Comes in by Bob Dylan

"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."
