Grasping At Straws

You gotta love The Corner, National Review's semi-blog (you can't post comments). They are worried about the John McCain age issue in the fall.

I hate to bring politics into the inspirational, spiritual visit of Benedict XVI, but could it help John McCain with the age issue? The pope was energetic, engaged and in serene command (in a peaceful way). Since he is 81 years old (ten years older than Mac), could the images of Benedict seen by Americans from Nationals Park in DC, St. Pat's and Yankee Stadium subliminally impact voters regarding Mac's age?

Pope John McCain? Yes, that sounds ok to me, and I suspect people will look at the current Pope and note that John McCain isn't too old to hold that job.

I think it is highly doubtful that more than a minute percentage of US voters will see McCain as a youthful 71 after watching the Pope on his visit. And, isn't McCain 72?

But if elected Pope would he be able to deal with Rev. Hagee taking back his endorsement hoppy?

The only things more old and tired looking than McCain are his positions on the issues...

That's the ticket. Keep McCain surrounded by octogenarians, nonagenarians, and centenarians for the whole campaign so he'll look young in comparison.

Hold on... Pope Ratzinger is only 81 years old.

John McCain, age 847, is more than 10 times older.

Oh come on, Destor, there you go with that 847 again. McCain was born on August 29, 1936, which makes him only about a year older than me, and I'm in the prime of health. I carried a 35-pound backpack up and down several miles of hills today, getting ready for a longer future backpack, and then swam twenty laps in the pool. Everything still works, I assure you, so you have a lot to look forward to if you manage to stay alive like McCain and I have. I hope you do -- I want to see the look on your (web) face when you too hit the magic seventies.

Or could seeing the Pope Ratzinger subconsciously remind voters how old men are often completely out of touch.

being pope is not quite the same as being President or being President is not quite the same as being pope - McCain is crude and sly and wishes to continue a GOP legacy of making the rich richer. You can have him; I don't want him. If he's elected I'll give up and go back to living in my hole where the GOP would like to see me stay.

The real question is whether McCain's senility will mellow his notoriously bad temper or make it even worse.
