LA Times Steals Obama Hit Piece From Crazy Rightwing Blogger

Earlier today I posted a piece from today's Los Angeles Times which trashes Barack Obama for being perceived as empathetic to Palestinians.

It's a ridiculous piece. Writer Peter Wallsten, seems to be suggesting that Obama may have problems with Jews because some Arabs like him.

But thanks to TPM Cafe reader Lally and the great NATION reporter, Ari Berman, we now have the rest of the story. Turns out that Wallsten was trolling for anti-Obama dirt and turned to the far right Kahanist blogger Debbie Schlussel to give it to him. She obliged but because he didn't credit her, she blows the whistle on him.

Schlussel also also reveals that Wallsten, the LA Times reporter on the Obama beat, is desperately trying to find links between Obama and Farrakhan. (I guess that is the "scandal" the Clinton folks are counting on to end Obama's candidacy, the one they keep hinting about.)

It's pretty amazing. When did the Los Angeles Times stop being a real newspaper? Will it soon recruit Michelle Malkin to write about the immigration debate? It already has Lucianne Goldberg's son as a regular columnist. How low can it go?

The good news. We have a heads up on the Farrakhan story. The inside scoop is that he and Obama use the same barber. And that barber once said Ariel Sharon had a weight problem. You read it here first. Get ready for the firestorm.

I haven't read the LATimes piece, but I gather that the bold print and parenthetical may be yours. So can we assume that your line of thinking is that a reporter "looking into" something is "desperately trying to find" and do you believe that a lot of reporters regulary do hit jobs on behalf of a campaign?

No, not on behalf of candidates. They are just used by candidates. All the time.
Usually by the Repubs.

"When did the Los Angeles Times stop being a real newspaper?"

Probably not too long after a bunch of financial hucksters calling themselves Tribune Co. bought the Los Angeles Times.

avatar

I find this interesting...

I'm a republican and the right-wing-nut-job types complain endlessly about the LA Times as being pure leftist propaganda (all the while believing everything Limbaugh has to say of course).

I guess I thought the left-leaning media types (no - I don't think its a vast left wing media conspiracy, just the times we live in) would have dealt with the democratic nomination with more neutrality and positivity, you know the 'at least it won't be Bush again' tact.

Seems the Clintons may have created a vast get-Bill-back-in-the-White-House-no-matter-what conspiracy to counteract the vast right wing one.

Personally, I think Hillary's campaign is based more on Helter Skelter than it is anything else. Only SHE can rule the world because everyone else is too weak bwahahahahaaaa!

Number 48 in the “Obama Smeared” series. One thing about smears that seems to be forgotten is that at base there is a lie. They are not just factual investigations of the “victim” no matter what might be the intent of the author.

MJ, “…desperately trying to find links between Obama and Farrakhan. (I guess that is the "scandal" the Clinton folks are counting on to end Obama's candidacy, the one they keep hinting about.)”
Now, that’s a smear.

It seems like the alot of people are in the Obama scandal business.

Every week I receive a free paper called the "Brooklyn View" published by Zygot Publishing Corp.

Every week there is a column written by "The Fly on the Wall". This "fly" claims to know all the inside information on the political scene.

Here is last weeks prediction:

"Obama backers listen up: looks like the Big O survived the first wave, Rev. Wright. Barack has shot past Billary by 10 points in the national polls...But fasten your seat belts. The Fly has learned and you will soon hear about O's friendship with a convicted Weather Underground member who makes Wright look like a "Founding Father Patriot."

If that wasn't enough, you will soon hear the financial dealings O had with Resko...It won't be pleasant.

I have detected a particular partisan bias in this paper. There seems to be alot of feel good stories about nyc's republican representatives.

Someday I hope to find out who the "fly" really is. There was a letter to the editor printed recently asking for the "Fly" to reveal him/herself. The "fly" refused.

"It's pretty amazing. When did the Los Angeles Times stop being a real newspaper? ... How low can it go?"

The corporate media is the most dysfunctional institution in the country...and seeing the state of politics, academia, and our corporate structure, this is saying a lot. It is also one of the most dangerous institutions to what remains of our democratic institutions. It is time to build a "new" media outside the corporate structure. Do I know what I am talking about. No. But it seems to be a real need we must somehow address (to some extent the left blogs are already doing some of this).

The LA Times has been losing it for sometime now ... (as A Wikrent above notes); they've been repeatedly hacking away at the newsroom -- wave after wave of layoffs -- editors leaving in protest. slash and burn ...

avatar

Schlussel also also reveals that Wallsten, the LA Times reporter on the Obama beat, is desperately trying to find links between Obama and Farrakhan. (I guess that is the "scandal" the Clinton folks are counting on to end Obama's candidacy, the one they keep hinting about.)

Or could it be a scandal the republicans are looking for?

No, pretty sure it's Hillary, but I have no doubt that if she managed to gin something up she'd tell us how much better for Obama it was for her to do it than it would have been if the Republicans had done it.

It should be noted that back in 1992, Gov Bill Clinton tried to muddie the war issue, while also inventing a Jewish problem for Paul Tsongas.

"Tsongas was thrown on the defensive, forced to rebut each supposed example of his 'softness' on Israel manufactured by the Clintons, drowning out his own message. All the while, Bill Clinton fulminated against the press, fuming about its supposed favoritism toward Tsongas-a tactic that spurred much of the press to prove its fairness by treating Clinton's sham attacks as a straightforward policy dispute."

http://www.observer.com/2008/once-again-clinton-muddies-war-issue

Sound familiar?

I totally didn't know that about Tsongas. Figures though.
As to Clinton folks hinting that some shocking new revelation will end Bama's campaign, ask a reporter. That is the line. And it's also the pne fed to the superdelegates.
That isn't even news.

avatar

I think part of the Clinton campaign aim in constantly hinting about dark revelations regarding Obama is to light a fire under reporters and get them to turn something up. My guess is that if they really had the goods they would have used them before.

I can't find any actual reporting on a Clinton campaign hint at an Obama-Farrakhan connection or any kind of career-ending scandal or covert smear (though I see a lot of gossip and spin about it). Do you have a source or a link?

{crickets}

Dan K. I think you are right. I wonder what it is about Obama that leads inevitably to the assumption that there is something dark in his past.

avatar

I'm gonna go way, way, WAYYYY out on a limb, and guess it has something to do with his **dark** skin.

Move along folks---nothing to see here.

avatar

For the past year the LA Times has been under the ownership of one Sam Zell.

Surely this has nothing to do with anything.

U.S. Presidential hopeful Obama launches Hebrew blog in Israel

By The Associated Press and Haaretz Service

U.S. Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has launched a Hebrew blog in Israel.

Obama aide Eric Lynn says on the site that the senator hopes through the blog to strengthen ties with the Israeli public.

The blog that opened Friday includes Obama's speech to a pro-Israel lobby in March.

Lynn says at the bottom of the blog that Obama is committed to Israel's security.

The Yediot Ahronot newspaper reported Friday that Obama's campaign insisted that the blog be opened before the Democratic primary April 22 in Pennsylvania. The state has a large Jewish population.

Obama's staff has worked hard to disprove a mass e-mail campaign, which had leveled a succession of allegations against the candidate, branding him a secret anti-Semite, a closet Muslim who took his official oath of office with his hand on the Koran instead of the Bible, and a disciple of fiery Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

The campaign further alleged that several of Obama's Mideast policy advisors are pro-Palestinian haters of Israel.

During a debate with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, Obama stressed his "stalwart" support for Israel and his ties to American Jews. He said he considers Israel to be one of the U.S.' "most important allies in the region [Mideast]" and added: "I think that their security is sacrosanct."

avatar

Actually, I don't think Sam Zell or Tribune Co. have anything to do with this. As long as I can remember, the LA Times has had a slavish devotion to Israel and to the most exreme Likud tendencies within the Israel lobby -- enough to make the NY Times and the Washington Post look like PLO house organs by comparison. I don't know why this is.

I live in LA and I don't read the Times anymore. It was already starting to fade 6 years ago when I first moved here but it was still a legitimate paper with generally solid reporting. But once the Tribune Company bought it the drop off was staggering.

MJ,

I'm disappointed in you. Not everything that may or may not be happening to trash Obama can be traced to the Clinton camp. People that do this are letting the Republican dirty tricksters like David Bossie off the hook. As I said in other posts, I expect the Republicans have already
dusted off the Willy Horton picture in case Obama is the candidate.

I stopped supporting Hillary for legitimate reasons and now I support Obama, but for me, I am absolutely frustrated with those that seem to spend all their waking hours trashing Hillary.

I'm a liberal and I had my issues with the Clinton Presidency, but I found myself defending him and Hillary for 8 years against the incessant Republican attacks and hearings.

Its really tiresome to come to TPM and see incessant attacks continuing when in fact the attacks should be mounted against McCain.

(or Krauthammer) :-)

Well, I was one of those that thought the Wright thing would sink Obama. It still may, come the general election. They'll beat that story to death.

After the Wright controversy erupted, I assumed that every reporter worth his or her salt would be out there looking under every rock for something on Obama. Given that nothing's come up, I have to assume that there's nothing there. They'd have found it by now. Particularly since, as this article points out, all the wingers are out and about coming up with something.

I think the Jewish angle shows that, even if nothing's there, they'll manufacture something straight out of thin air. Even my own fairly well informed Mother thought Obama's a muslim. She ALREADY thinks he's anti-Israel, just because of Rev. Wright. How this translates in real life, I don't know. But this is the crap that he'll face in the general.

It may all work. People tend to forget to vote for black candidates once the curtain is pulled.

John W,
I disagree. The Jewish thing is not coming from the Republicans. I know that for a fact (reporters tell me where its coming from).
I'll vote for HRC if she's the nominee but I thank God she won't be.

avatar

MJ, it -- the "Jewish thing" -- WILL come from the Republicans in the fall. And not just to gain Jewish votes, but also to gain conservative Christian votes. Some of us WASPS are as crazy about Israel as the Likud party is.

Krauthammer's piece today is very predictable. He really gets on my nerves. I fail to understand why he can't see in the slightest the the best course for Israel would be to cut a deal with the Palestinians.

If that was accomplished, then you would see the strategic threat to Israel diminish over time. Not right away, but over time. Instead, what people like Krauthammer are doing is increasing the strategic risk to Israel over time, as time is not in Israel's favor.

The 900 pound gorilla in the room regarding the West Bank problem is the rise of China. Over time, China will come to eclipse the US as the world's dominant power. They have no Jewish community to speak of, and certainly no historical or cultural ties to the Judiasm, like the West or the US does.

In short, they have no dog in this hunt. BUT they do need oil. Who would you be willing to listen to, Israelis or the mass of Arab nations that have a resource you need? Because of the long, gradual, slide of the US -- hastened by Bush's stupidity -- the umbrella protecting Israel, in terms of modern weapons, funds, etc., will count for less and less. It will not be replaced by a Chinese one.

If Krauthammer and people like Joe Lieberman had a lick of common sense, they'd understand that the window of opportunity for cutting a deal is closing....

"...the "scandal" the Clinton folks are counting on to end Obama's candidacy..."

You live by the sword, you die by the sword. You can expect a story in the NY Times, just like the piece this past February about John McCain and lobbyist Vicki Iseman, only Bill Clinton will be the target. It may not have any merit, but Matt Drudge, Sean Hannity, William Kristol, Rush Limbaugh, Brit Hume and the Washington Times/NY Post will echo the speculation until NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN pick it up. Tim Russert and Wolff Blitzer would be left to question Begala, Carville, Wolfson, et al., can we afford to have an Administration with this distraction? Can we afford four years of president coping with a spouse with a sordid past of infidelities? Can we afford a media consumed with tabloid instincts chasing ratings when far more serious issues need aired to the public?

The difference between the life span of these McCain and Clinton rumors? The majority of Americans will immediately assume the Clinton story is credible.

avatar

You can be sure that Obama will play to all sides on this issue.

M.J. --

I believe you. I also thank God in that same way.

I have trouble seeing how a campaign can have some bombshell peice of dirt on another candidate, that the press hasn't gotten any sniff of. Here's my logic:

a) If it was widely known through the HRC campaign, the secret would just leak out and the press would already know (too many lips to seal). Therefore, it would have to be known and tightly held by just a few in the Clinton campaign.

b) How would they have come about this information? How would the leaders of the HRC campaign, who are plenty busy day-to-day, find time to run around investigating muck on Obama? What resources would they have that the press wouldn't?

c) Why would they hold onto it? She's losing ground in Penn pretty quickly. Why not use it now? If they've had it for awhile, wouldn't it have been useful before or just after the Texas/Ohio primaries?

Seems like a lot of smoke to me. We'll see if there's a fire, or if it's just a smoke bomb.
