Ask Not What TPMCafe Can Do ...
Over the next few weeks we're going to be doing some upgrades to the software platform that runs TPMCafe as well as rolling out some new features that users have been asking for.
Tonight, we're looking for a few TPMCafe regulars to help us do some final beta-testing of the new version of the software. If you'd like to lend us a hand please send an email to tpmbugs@gmail.com. We'll send instructions.
And keep an eye out for further posts about new features we're designing for the site.

Thanks for your efforts, Josh, and for listening to us oldtimer's comments about needing more information from you about what to expect with all the changes.
I'm probably too bandwidth-challenged to be much good as a beta-tester, but I did want to make a suggestion. Would it be possible to have reader blogs tied to the specific TPM sections? I'm thinking particularly of the possibility of having blogs that are specifically candidate-oriented viewable only in the Election Central portion of TPM. There could be a checkbox or some similar device so a person could direct his/her blog post to either Election Central or other parts of the TPM site. That might be one way of encouraging more extended conversation about other topics at the rest of the site, which I have to admit I miss.
OTOH, given the incredibly high level of interest in the elections, my suggestion may fairly unworkable. So many people want to talk about the elections that it may be too difficult to try to restrain that in any way, not to mention whatever software difficulties it might create. At any rate, the idea is just my two cents...

Yeah, we're actually considering doing this. Readers can now say which tpm blogs they want their posts to show up on. But they can choose one or all three. I think that's a problem; it leads to a kind of gaming of the system. And with all the interest in the elections that just overwhelms discussions of anything else. And the topic has become so contentious that that contentiousness has dominated tpmcafe. So no definite decisions yet, but we're definitely considering it.

This is a delightful service.

Josh, try this.
Click on any blog. If the writer's "full name" in their profile is blank, there is no byline when the post opens. Once the blog drops off the list, you have no way to find other blogs that particular writer has posted unless you know their user name.
Will the new version link everything to a writer's user name?

I'm not completely sure I understand what you're describing in this case. But the blank byline issue is one of the issues this upgrade is supposed to fix.

In every case where there is no byline, the space above "Details" in their profile is blank.
In every case where there is a byline, the space above "Details" in their profile has the name associated with the blog itself.
I can't go into any other profile, of course, but based on mine, it appears that the name associated with the blog, is the writer's "full name", while the name associated with a comment is a writer's "user name".
So, you've got some people blogging and commenting in two different names. I suspect that most people thought their "user name" would be associated with anything they write. The glitch is that blogging isn't attached to user name, except to get you into the system and archive your posts with your profile.
Clear as mud, huh?

Those improvements are very impressive. The only thing I could make not work right was the "recommend this" function. If I recommended one of the nonsense posts, then left the website for another, and clicked the link in the email to get back here, my recommendation always was missing - the number of recommendations remained as it was before I clicked "recommend this". Minor glitch, with most likely a simple reason. For example, I wonder if this is something that prevents someone from doing multiple recommendations of a post???

I realize that you didn't ask for suggestions, but if there was some way to make the "Recent" sidebar a longer list and the /talk a full day...

Do we still have a prayer of getting our couple years worth of our old posts back?

yes, this is coming

It would seem to me that the ability to change my password to something different than the one you give me through my email would be nice.
Everytime I want to comment here I have to go dig up a new password -- all attempts to change it to something that I will remember have been unsuccessful to date.
Is having the ability to change my password too much to ask?

The people who do the tech work on the site are on hand this weekend to answer questions and we're making sure the new version of the site addresses these problems. So please send a message to the email address in the post. These are exactly the kind of bugs we're trying to resolve.

Logged in, tried looking at comments here, found I had to log in again to post.

And the post does not show up immediately, if that was a goal. BTW, using Firefox for now. Formatting is a bit more reliable, although my copy (sometimes conveniently) can't display some ad content, since it tries to associate all moving graphics with Quicktime.

Damn, didn't notice I was back at the main address.

Want to hear some good news? I really like the way that posts show up to the right of comments, so you don't have to back-click to get back to the list. That is a good feature.
Good job on that one! Don't faint!

Always in favor of some sort of edit feature so that I can corecct my spillings (actually more like typping) misteaks.

I actually see some long-timers in this post, but the few times I have stopped by since the software downgrade I really haven't seen any names I recognized. Whatever the goal for the downgrade was it seems to have been accomplished, but IMHO as a charter contributor I think it is too late.

And whaddya know - even though I had gone through the whole "try to post - not recognized - log out - log in" cycle on Friday I get the "not recognized" error with this post. Luckily I learned my lesson and had done a copy of my text before trying to submit.

Is there still a way to see how long someone has been a contributor/member?

After two days with the Beta version I remain extremely impressed. Most of the irritating aspects of this version are corrected. Just seeing a comment appear on the site within a minute is shocking after getting used to the delays we now have.
Remaining to be worked on, as far as I can tell, are the lack of a preview or editing feature, and the lack of clear specifications of what html tags are to be used. But, take my word for it, major progress is at hand. (Better yet, join the Beta testing group.)

Just to be clear, once we get this done and we're working on a stable system, then next up will be adding new functionality. Top of the list are a new editing feature -- which should include ability to edit, preview, etc. And then comment tracking.

What you guys have in beta is light years better. I have sent some notes to your consultants but I'm really pleased overall.
The thing is, Josh, and I say this as a loyal reader who would no sooner say "I'm voting for McCain if I don't get my way" than say "I'm leaving TPM if I don't get my way..."
I still prefer the old Cafe to the debugged new one.

I'm guessing Josh has reasons for pursuing this path with this model -- not that I have a clue myself! -- so let's just try to help get this one up and running as well as it can run, and eventually including all the nifty features we hope for which Josh is planning to implement asap!
It will be sweet ... *^! I'll trust yet ...

I do too. I'm an active beta tester at this point and I hope most of the regulars are. At some point I would like Josh to just write a post explaining why we had to make this change but I'm all about helping the new site worker better. There are things I miss about the old TPM but if we don't get those back I'm not going to stomp off into the sunset. Besdides, where would I go?
April 6, 2008 9:11 PM | Reply | Permalink
If you live on the left coast, and you stomp off into the sunset, you just drown. Consider that a metaphor, with deep philosophical meanings, meant to offer comfort and knowledge. Then explain what I meant to me???

I understand that. And you may always feel that way. But let me just make this point. The debugging is just step one. We needed to get the thing actually working before we could start improving it in the sense of adding features. I'm confident that once we get the new features coming and online it will at least be much better than what you're using now and will make you pine for the old site a bit less.

Are you staying with your Movable Type system or moving to something new?
The worst thing about this site experientially is the delay between posting and seeing your post. I'm guessing that's because you are regenerating static pages on a 5 or 10 minute cycle rather than serving active pages. ... Understandable on a busy site, but a real annoyance for the user.
Another annoyance is the inability to correct comments after they are made (or diaries which Kos allows).
Don't be alarmed by this. Check out a Drupal based site, like TheOilDrum.com, for comment editing, or Kos for diary editing after posting.
On the TheOilDrum http://www.theoildrum.com/(drupal) people comment and then have a fixed time to edit their comments. It's wonderful. You end up saying exactly what you want, and nobody is confused. In general a Drupal site is much more pleasurable to interact with than this MovableType (if that is what it is?) site.
Then doesn't Slashdot open source their software?
http://www.slashcode.com/ I mean that's a great system, with reputation rankings... immediate appearance of postings... can handle huge volumes. I realize that it doesn't make CMS style news presentation easy... but frankly it would be easier to jerry rig that, than to get a commenting system that was actually worth using. You'd probably rather be a news site first and a comment site second... but still having a comment system that is fun to use is a real plus.
Finally, I don't know what Kos runs on, but if that is open source it would be worth looking into.
I love Movable Type (assuming that's what this is) for a low traffic blog, but TalkingPointsMemo seems way too big to serve through Movable Type. (Or maybe you've got server issues that need addressing? That might be the speed issue... but it can't address the user interface problems.)
I totally appreciate the content of TPM, and I hate to see so hampered by the limitations of MT and/or your current bandwidth and server issues.
Good luck!

The last incarnation of this site that "old timers" above are complaining about missing and saying they want back in preference to this new Movable Type that was installed in February was customized Drupal. That, in turn, had been customized to look and work more like Scoop (just like Kos was, comment ratings, parent links, other stuff like that) according to user complaints here, when this site switched from Scoop to Drupal quite some time ago. Users at that time missed the Scoop features and they were added custom to the Drupal. It took quite some time to build, as I recall.
