Spitzer Open Thread

He didn't resign, there's word of indictments but no confirmation, The New York Times says he's Client #9. I have no words, do you?

If he resigns, does this mean Clinton loses a superdelegate?

Perhaps two. Spitzer's assistant governor is an unwilling Clinton supporter, and when he comes out of Spitzer's shadow, may change his position on the nominnee.

user-pic

He really shouldn't resign. I voted for him and I'm not sure how whether or not he's ever paid for sex impacts on his ability to govern. He should really stick this out.

user-pic

What about the structuring (I think it's called), the hiding of the money? Do you really want a governor that is doing that?

user-pic

At times like this, words fail me, too. I mean, client # 9? What the? Perhaps some classical music will help me understand.

I think it give Guiliani a chance to resurrect his career.

user-pic

I don't know whether he should resign at all, but rather than stories that he was "involved in a prostitution ring", it should really be reported that he was involved with obtaining services from a prostitute. The former sounds as though he was helping to run the thing.

user-pic
Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

How very disappointing.

user-pic

He's going to resign. He must resign. He's got too much other scandal baggage going on from earlier in his term not to resign over this.

He should resign, then start a second career advocating for the legalization of victimless crimes.

We should pull prostitution and recreational drugs from the shadows, where organized crime can run them, into the daylight of regulation.

user-pic

Once again we discover how politicians should not pretend to be or try to sell themselves as paragons of virtue.

user-pic

That's actually so very key, John. For example, it's why Bill Clinton maintained a 2/3 approval rating all through an impeachment. There's great political benefit in a politician embracing relativism, but then, I'm prejudiced on the matter of relativism.

user-pic

This is only news because prostitution is illegal.

let's all remember, there is still a senator from the great state of Louisiana who is still in office after similar shenanigans.

user-pic

The Bush gang wants retroactive immunity for themselves and for the Telecoms. The reason they want this immunity is because, apart from 'terrorists', they were spying on their political enemies, the Democrats.

Remember the Bush official who said:'if this ever gets out...'?

Remember what Deputy AG James Comey said about top Justice Dept officials threatening to resign
over a "classified program" the Bush gang wanted legalized?

Spitzer got caught on a wire tap by the FBI, but I think the Bush gang found out about Spitzer before the FBI did when they were illegally spying on Americans (Democrats)

This is a shot across the bow of Democrats who are fighting retroactive immunity.

Oh, by the way, the sharks on Wall Street and the boys in the Corporate Board Rooms who Spitzer prosecuted are jumping with joy.

user-pic

With all of Spitzers problems, it is eerily reminiscent of Clinton.

Lots of smoke, little fire, then a, ahem, 'lady' gets him unzippered.

Sometimes I wish Dems were as ruthless, but then I think again, and I'm glad they're not.

user-pic

That Louisiana Senator was not the former Attorney General and still the top titular law enforcement official in the State. That is I assume the State Patrol reports to the Governor. That kind of puts Spitzer in a whole different category than Vetter. The Senator represents a state where a once popular bumper sticker read 'Vote for the Crook, its Important' when the choice was between an openly corrupt governor and openly racist David Duke.

I really don't think Spitzer can fall back on the defense "Not as crooked as a typical Louisiana pol". I suspect his days can be numbered using one hand.

What would they say about this in France?
Same as Clinton and Monica--a shrug and 'c'est la vie.'

My take? At least it was a woman;>

Dave Bowman said:

"My take? At least it was a woman;"

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA :-)

user-pic

Wait a minute! I thought the new standards for resignations only involved same sex participation in public men's rooms, i.e. Craig and Allen, while prostitute sex like Vitter's requires an apology only. Have the rules changed again? How confusing.

user-pic

The rules have only changed for Republicans. You can't hold them by the same standards.

It wouldn't be fair....

Can Hillery say something now. Read this from ABC News. CBS is reporting the same thing.

It Wasn't the Sex; Suspicious $$ Transfers Led to Spitzer
Officials Say Spitzer Is 'Client 9' in a Federal Complaint Against the Prostitution Ring
By BRIAN ROSS
March 10, 2008—

The federal investigation of a New York prostitution ring was triggered by Gov. Eliot Spitzer's suspicious money transfers, initially leading agents to believe Spitzer was hiding bribes, according to federal officials.

It was only months later that the IRS and the FBI determined that Spitzer wasn't hiding bribes but payments to a company called QAT, what prosecutors say is a prostitution operation operating under the name of the Emperors Club.

As recently as this past Valentine's Day, Feb. 13, Spitzer, who officials say is identified in a federal complaint as "Client 9," arranged for a prostitute "Kristen" to meet him in Washington, D.C.

The woman met Client 9 at the Mayflower Hotel, room 871, "for her tryst," according to the complaint. Client 9 also is alleged to have paid for the woman's train tickets, cab fare, mini bar and room service, travel time and hotel.

The suspicious financial activity was initially reported by a bank to the IRS which, under direction from the Justice Department, brought kin the FBI's Public Corruption Squad.

"We had no interest at all in the prostitution ring until the thing with Spitzer led us to learn about it," said one Justice Department official.

user-pic

I have no words, do you?

Just one: "plastics".

Seriously, this is just the latest example of a bunch of New York-based media types and bloggers gone all a-flutter over the overrated travails of some local favorite son.

Look at what these four figures have in common:

Hillary Clinton: Junior Senator from New York and reigning Empress of Westchester County, once thereby thought the inevitable Democratic nominee for President. Now looking quite evitable.

Rudolph Giuliani: Former NYC mayor once designated "the nation's mayor" due to exaggerated 9/11 hype and the usual media Gotham-centrism. Skipped several primaries under the theory that he could coast to the White House on the strength of the Gotham vote in the Florida and New York primaries. Now recuperating in oblivion.

Michael Bloomberg: Another NYC mayor and local Wall Street hero who teased his five boroughs for weeks with the notion that he would mount an independent run for President, apparently sharing the impression with his provincial fan club that a nation turns its lonely eyes to ... um ... Michael Bloomberg. The new Icarus Bloomberg falls with a barely audible "plop" into the Hudson, in the background of national consciousness like in the Bosch painting, as the rest of the nation says "Michael who?" and goes about its business.

Eliot Spitzer: Little-known New York Governor, apparently elected in 2006 with little notice beyond his home state. His main claim to fame is that he probably had the best college board scores of any politician in US history, a quirky fact that curiously doesn't seem to have attracted the attention of the 99.6% of Americans with lower board scores. On March 10, 2008, the vast majority of Americans who live outside New York simultaneously learn (i) who Spitzer is, and (ii) why they probably don't have to care anymore who he is.

user-pic

Yuk.

I loved Randi Rhodes' question---"Who is Client #1?" (Or 2-8?)

user-pic

This is literally unbelievable.

I just looked up the word "Hypocrite" in the dictionary and there is a huge inset photo of Eliot Spitzer.

What a jerk. Begone with him.

The story here, much like the McCain/Iseman story, is not about sex. It's about the hypocrisy.

Personally, I really don't care about what consenting adults do in their personal lives. I didn't care about Clinton and Lewinsky. At least not because of the sex. The fact is, Clinton's actions had a cost that the nation paid. This is a fact of being in a position of leadership. The fact is that the citizens of New York will now have to pay the price for this man's actions.

I won't stand over anyone and admonish them over the intimate details of their personal relationships any more than I would stand for someone doing that to me. It is the hypocrisy and the failure of leadership that are truly disappointing here.

Will Hillary run for Gov. of NY in 2 years or will she go for majority leader if Obama wins?

Executive Branch Accountability

Since Elliot had his hand in the cookie jar (har har), I'm glad he got caught.

And since we aren't Bushies, we aren't going to try to sweep our dirty laundry under the rug. I applaud the proper functioning of government, where open records and honest audits will find that a few thousand dollars have been transferred from government accounts to a shell company. . . . for PROSTITUTES.

Imagine what we might find if we dug through a couple billion misplaced by the Administration?

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/03/executive-branch-accountabilit.php

As a Ny'er w/ a nat'l ear - I can say the story is not all about the obvious sludge.

In the context of this Dem Nom fight, the real story is the fall of Spitzer as a huge Clinton supporter, Super-delegate & fellow NY pol - whose shenanigans remind the electorate of the Clintons' tenure.

And, the Lt. Gov. David Paterson - a black man and Columbia grad (who also happens to be blind) -ready to step in post-Spitzer-resignation - who'd be the first black Gov. of NY State - from the storied Paterson family of Harlem (ala his father Basil).

Even if it can't be Eyes - there are Ears and a Heart on the Prize.

Serendipity baby (t'anks D. Vitale).

user-pic

The bad news is that Spitzer's career as Democratic Governor of New York is over.

The good news is that he's now eligable to run for a Louisiana Senate seat as a Republican...

user-pic

Prayers for his wife. She's a special woman married to a man who seems very much in love with himself.

What a look of genuine joy she had for him when he was being sworn in as governor. And although he injured her deeply, she stands by him even now.

He ought to resign not only because he committed a sin and possibly a crime, but because the pride that fueled it still has him. Resignation from the power would be therapeutic for him and his family. It would be the true way to "rededicate" himself to his wife and family.

user-pic

"I have no words, do you?"

How about - stupid arrogant hypocrite?

user-pic

Will this episode generate sympathy for Hillary as a result of memories of Bill and Monica?

Will folks start thinking that maybe if we have a woman as Chief Exec. we won't have to worry about this again in the W.H.?

Marginal effects at least?

Recall David Vitter, Senator from Louisiana, family values champion? This man frequented brothels in New Orleans and patronized call girl services in D.C. His reward? A standing ovation from his colleagues

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070723/OPINION/707230311

Mr Vitter still sits in the Senate, still represents Louisiana. Where is the chorus calling for his resignation? Indeed, compare the decibels, the column inches, the bandwidth.

Let's have just a TINY bit of coherence and consistency. And just a LITTLE bit of attention to the things that actually matter to the governance of the country.

I don't really want to be dragged into the sex lives of public figures (or really, anyone else having consensual sex with another adult). I don't care whether the sex is straight, gay, 'adulterous,' etc. It's just not other people's business.

I think the witch hunt of Gary Hart (dating myself here) was stupid, and that the whole business with Bill Clinton was beyond stupid. I also think that Vitter and Craig are jerks, and evidently Spitzer has some major disconnects. But so what? What do their sexual 'indiscretions' have to do with anything?

And why is it that these things are more important to the electorate than political corruption, overt lying, influence peddling, and failure to uphold the Constitution?

Finally, there is the blatant double standard: Why do the Republicans get away with being SHOCKED, I say SHOCKED about Spitzer--and calling for his impeachment if he does not resign--while shrugging off the conduct of Vitter and Craig?

user-pic

a few thousand dollars have been transferred from government accounts to a shell company. . . . for PROSTITUTES.

What evidence do you have that any taxpayer funds were involved? I've read nothing that suggests Mr. Spitzer used anything but his own money.

user-pic

The New York Republican leadership did NOT say:

"Impeachment is OFF the table."

user-pic

You got that right! Sheesh, it's like wolves against chickens.
