Mister Answer Man: Special Debate Edition!

user-pic

Apparently an interesting point of political doctrine and liturgical procedure emerged late in tonight’s debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and my readers are all abuzz about it! Let’s go to the mailbag:

Dear Mister Answer Man: Tonight on TPM Election Central, I read a discussion of whether Barack Obama did enough to distance himself from Louis Farrakhan. The following is Greg Sargent’s account, and I have a question about it:
But the inane question of the night award goes to this Russert inanity, which we just heard moments ago:

"Do you accept the support of Louis Farrakhan?"

Obama, unsurprisingly, denounced Farrakhan, and used the occasion to argue that there's yet another historic dimension to his candidacy:

"What I want to do is rebuild what I consider to be a historic relationship between the African-American community and the Jewish community."

Hillary, in her rejoinder, seems to suggest that Obama didn't go far enough:

"There’s a difference between denouncing and rejecting. And I think that when it comes to this sort of inflammatory– I have no doubt that everything Barack just said is absolutely sincere. But I just think that we’ve got to be even stronger. We cannot let anyone in any way say these things, because of the implications that they have, which can be so far-reaching."

Obama's response: There isn't a difference between "reject" and "denounce," but if anyone thinks there is a difference, he rejects and denounces Farrakhan.

Mister Answer Man, Greg Sargent seems awfully flip about this. He seems to think that Obama is now completely off the hook, and that the question itself was “inane.” I’m not so sure. Aren’t the American people entitled to know whether Barack Obama, as a Muslim, approves of another Muslim who thinks Judaism is a “gutter religion,” and shouldn’t Obama reject him even more strongly by rejecting and denouncing him and then repudiating and disdaining him as well? – D. Schlussel, Michigan

Mister Answer Man replies: Thanks for your question, Ms. Schlussel. In one respect, I think you are misinformed: Barack Obama is a practicing Christian. However, you raise a good point when you ask if there’s something more that Obama should have done. There is, in fact, a proper form for denouncing and rejecting Farrakhan; it is called renouncing Farrakhan. Impartial moderator Tim Russert was quite right to press Obama on this, and Hillary Clinton was quite right to suggest that Obama didn't execute his part properly tonight. For the record, this is how it's done:

Famously tough but fair questioner: Abrenuntiatis farrakhanae? [Do you renounce Farrakhan?]

Liberal black officeseeker: Abrenuntio.

Famously tough but fair questioner: Et omnibus operibus eius? [And all his works?]

Liberal black officeseeker: Abrenuntio.

Famously tough but fair questioner: Et omnibus pompis eius? [And all his pomps?]

Liberal black officeseeker: Abrenuntio.

Very well then. Next time, let’s hope the Obama camp performs the ritual correctly. And here's another reader with a timely followup!

Dear Mister Answer Man: Gee, that question-and-answer thing you've cited above seems awfully ornate. And it would seem to pose quite a dilemma for America’s black politicians! Tell me, is there a similar ritual for when conservative white officeseekers are endorsed by dangerous religious zealots who urge their followers to “Pray that additional vacancies occur within the Supreme Court” and to “Take authority over the schemes of Satan concerning the Supreme Court”?G. Myrdal, Sweden

Mister Answer Man replies: Hell, no! What are you trying to do with this cheap, transparent kind of guilt-by-association? That's not the way America conducts a debate. You obviously don’t know very much about this country, Mr. Myrdal (if that is your real name), and as far as I'm concerned you can just take your little “gotcha” race-baiting question right back to Swedenistan where it belongs.

Famously tough but fair questioner: Abrenuntiatis farrakhanae? [Do you renounce Farrakhan?]

Liberal black officeseeker: Abrenuntio.

That only works if we then cut to a montage of Obama's minions whacking Moe Green.

user-pic

Interesting point, Jeff, but I don't think we'll see this come up until the first Obama-McCain debate, at which Obama will be asked, "up until now you have denounced and rejected and renounced Louis Farrakhan, but are you willing to say tonight that you will dispatch your minions to shoot him through the eye in order to 'send a message' to the American people?"

I really hope he doesn't flub that question.

user-pic

That's a powerful list of shunning-type moves.

You know what would be awesome? If after doing all that other shunning, Obama's final shun would be the brush-off.

Obama brushing off Farrakhan would totally rock.

user-pic

Obama brushing off one of the dumb questions asked by Russert would be more shocking, though justified.

user-pic

Impartial moderator Tim Russert was quite right to press Obama on this, and Hillary Clinton was quite right to suggest that Obama didn't execute his part properly tonight.

Well said. Indeed, there was nothing in Obama's response that could be construed to rise to the level of an enactment of faith which, under the circumstances, would have been inadequate in any case; claro, what was wanting was an auto da fe.

Tim Russert could easily rock a red cape and suit with a lil red yarmulke, maybe some red shoes to match.
It was a grand inquisition.

user-pic

My third cousin, Willy, is a homicidal maniac doing life in prison. He supports Hillary. I want Hillary to denounce and reject his support.

user-pic

Actually, John, as long as Hillary didn't take the title of her book, It Takes A Village, from a sermon by your third cousin who went with Farrakhan to meet with Qaddafi, I think she's in the clear. Because it's the taking the title of your book from a sermon by someone who went with Farrakhan to meet with Qaddafi that really suggests you need to reassure Jewish voters about your beliefs.

That was classic, Michael! :)

user-pic

And then there's Ann Coulter.

user-pic

And all his pumps?

Farrakhan wears high heels, doesn't he?

user-pic

To me Russert's schtick had more of a '50s House Unamerican Activities Committee feel to it, as in: "Are you now or have you ever been a card carrying member of the Negro race? If not, why do you associate with Negros and why do they support you?"

I guess GE knew what it was doing when it installed Russert in NBC's Washington bureau.

user-pic

Y'mean, Louis Farrakhan is still alive...?

user-pic

Nice avatar.

user-pic

Boy, the ritual you cite sounds a little like how easy it is to divorce in Islam. You just say: "I divorce you. I divorce you. I divorce you." Maybe you have to say it in Arabic, which I don't know and can't write. Maybe in Arabic it also means "I renounce you."

Perhaps an Arabic or Muslim scholar could weigh in here. So we're all prepared, just in case.

Dear Mister Answer Man -- As usual, your latte-swilling, ivory tower, never-met-a-payroll liberal bias is showing. Answer me this question -- and I'm asking it because I know you can't. WHY didn't Tim Russert ask Obama to SWEAR ON HIS AMERICAN FLAG LAPEL PIN that he hated Farrakhan with a force greater than a thousand suns? That was the dog that didn't bark.

So I guess what I'm saying it, "Why did Russert give Obama a pass on Farrakhan? WHEN, oh WHEN are we going to get to the BOTTOM of Lapel-PinGate?" America demands an answer...and also demands that that answer be given 24/7 cable news coverage.

user-pic

And when is someone going to ask him about those parking tickets of his? The American people demand to know!

And why was Obama "hiding behind" a business suit, instead of wearing his usual Somali Muslim garb??? Was he wearing Somali Muslim garb UNDER his business suit? And did this Somali Muslim garb have an American flag lapel pin? Why is no one asking this questions????

user-pic

WHY didn't Tim Russert ask Obama to SWEAR ON HIS AMERICAN FLAG LAPEL PIN that he hated Farrakhan with a force greater than a thousand suns?

A careful read of G. Myrdal's question and MAM's reply reveals An American Dilemma. There are similarities to Pat Robertson's endorsement of Guiliani because ordinarily he would have been renouncing the heathenish villain Guiliani, not comporting with him! But as MAM noted, both of those entities are white conservative men, so it doesn't count.

Meanwhile, the black men dilemma in this situation is new, which makes Republicans crazy, so they pass on asking the cowardly questions. The bottom line is that Democrats don't care and Republicans hate new black men dilemmas, leaving only the obnoxious and/or the crazies (TR) to screw up lapelgate.

Go figure.

The only legitimate question is a very straightforward one: How do you explain your close relationship with your minister, who is -- or at least has been -- a supporter of Farrakhan?

user-pic

Better yet, how do you explain going to Sunday Mass at a church who's pastor was the notorious gay hooker seeking Ted Haggard? Huh? Huh?

If we're goin' all Roman, let's hope the legions of Obama supporters outflank her hordes in Ohio and drive them to the River. But we don't want to hear their lamentations, we want their votes in the fall. The Romans weren't really big on forgiving (see Carthage). Maybe the Romans aren't the best analogy after all.

Save the Republic!

user-pic

Don't you mean "Imperial Moderator Time Russert"?

user-pic

Having a post just below a cockroach is really the pits! Gregor, I woke up with a cockroach on top of me!!!

All of the questions by Russert, Williams, and the rest of the inquisitors are submitted to the candidates to keep us (the American people) from being educated about what needs to be done by the next president. The Bush's deficit has taken us to a tenuous (at best) economy. What would and should the next president do to bring the deficit (and the national debt) under control? All Russert and Williams are trying to do is to promote a fight and put the candidates in uncomfortable positions. Educating the public be damned! No wonder we have so many people who do not understand the problems and think the tax cuts are for them, not the rich. Roosevelt tried to educate us, and the media allowed him to do that. Not now, however, because they want to play "oneupmanship" to show how much smarter they (the questioners) are than the candidates. They have turned the debates into nothing more than "I got you" affairs. For God's sake, this is supposed to be a presidential debate, now Meet the Press. Everyone knows that no matter what one's health plan (or any other plan for that matter) is going to go through congress in tact when he/she is president. To quibble over minor details is superfluous as are all the questions asked by Williams and Russert. When are we going to demand more of the media? I think the candidates would be willing to educate the public if given a chance.

user-pic

Its not an issue debate between the candidates; Russert, Williams, Blitzer etc. make it a debate between the candidates and the moderators and their love of irrelevancy. That was made obvious by the opening question by Williams to Hillary concerning the Obama picture.

Coincidentally, as Hillary mentioned later, I noticed the first question going to her and I said to my wife; "They're going to go after her."

Russert offered a hypothetical on the candidate's positions on Iraq, 'If the soverign state of Iraq said stay in force or leave, what would you do?'
They answered.

Then he offered another hypothetical, conjuring up a worst case scenario; 'well suppose al Qaeda moves and takes over in will you invade again?'

I wondered to myself, how many hypotheticals will he offer before he gets off this track?

Russert, who looks like a blowfish, should get leprosy and retire to a colony.

By the way, I'm not happy with either candidate.

Although you are right, perhaps, to stick to the compact and efficient Western liturgy in matters involving expensive air time, there is a clincher that used to be part of Roman practice (and is still observed in the East) that I think you might want to include. It involves the candidate's facing west (where, of course, Satan dwells) and spitting after each of three renunciations of him.

user-pic

Facing west were Satan resides? Hmm, that sounds a bit like us out here in California... one of the main roots of all evil from what I gather! ;-)

Hey wait, that might explain why the summers seem to be getting hotter and we're running out of water! ZOMGWTFBBQPONIES!!1!!

Just to point out how completely awesome D. Schlussel in Michigan really is:
http://mediamatters.org/items/200802130003?f=h_latest

user-pic

Candy hearts! "Obama and Islam"! "Pimp my Chelsea!" That is teh awesome.

Who's Debbie Schlussel?

Hey, that wouldn't happen to be Ms. DEBBIE Schussel, who works out of Detroit, who's work the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee once flagged as hate-speech, and all-around anti-islamist?

I note for the record that while in law school I wrote a column for our weekly newspaper called "Ask Mister Smart Guy', and I find this column to be a direct infringement of my copymark and traderight intellectual propertays.

That said, you will be hearing from my attorneys and a couple of Superdelegates about this.

Good day, sir. I said, good day!

user-pic

Mister Answer Man replies: Fine, Mister Smart Guy. Go ahead and sue, if you're so smart. All I know is that whatever happens, I'm going to be fine. I have strong support from my family and my friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people. And that's what this comment section should be about.

Mr. Russert's line of questioning, while not going nearly far enough, did at least begin the long and important task of "peeling the bark off" Barack Hussein Obama. However, much work remains.

To wit:

Barack Hussein Obama is a black man.

Barack Hussein Obama plays basketball.

Former New York Knickerbockers, Allan Houston and Charlie Ward, are black men who (coincidentally?) play basketball.

In 2001, Charlie Ward stated that, "Jews are stubborn... Why did they persecute Jesus unless he knew something they didn't want to accept? They had his blood on their hands."

Allan Houston expounded on Ward's comment by quoting from the Bible, "Then they spit in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists."

In response to both, the ADL said, "We were shocked to read the comments of New York Knicks players Charlie Ward and Allan Houston blaming the death of Jesus on Jews and accusing Jews of persecuting Christians. We had thought these destructive historic myths, which have been a source of anti-Semitism for centuries, were a thing of the past."

What does Barack Hussein Obama do to assure Jewish Americans that he is consistent with issues regarding Israel and does not in any way suggest that Allan Houston and Charlie Ward epitomize greatness, on or off the basketball court?

user-pic

I'm disppointed that Russert never asked Clinton if Roger Clemens were to endorse her, how she'd respond. I mean, his treatment of Batter-Americans has clearly demonstrated he's anti-homer and may even be anti-marge.

user-pic

I'm just glad TPM spent so much time going after that story on McCain because it was only based on the independent, corroborating accounts of two of McCain's aides but no documentary evidence.

Here, we DO have documentation in the form of chain e-mails, so I don't expect Howie Kurtz to be devoting a show to it any time soon.

The partial renewal of Obama's baptismal vows is one of the more the more entertaining episodes in an otherwise turgid political season.
Please note, however, that a ritual exorcism called the Asperges should have followed, with the Celebrant (or in this case, the Inquisitor), solemnly intoning "Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop"(Ps. 51), at which point Williams would have stood up and urinated on Russert's fat head.

By the way, my father reminds me that when the Communist Party endorsed FDR during 1944 campaign, Roosevelt responded to a similar line of questioning by saying 1)he did not ask for the party's endorsement, and 2)Americans can vote
any way they damn well please.

I was really hoping someone was going to bring up the spitting toward the West! Bravo to you, sir!

And I am sure the next question ab McCainitus will be: Abrenuntiatis Bushnuts?

user-pic

Obama should have said that he welcomes all voters to vote for him, whether he, Obama, agrees with them about all other things or not. Should we now ask all Jewish politicians whether they reject the Jewish Defense League or some other anti-Arab group? Should we demand that Republicans reject Cheney? This line of demand of Obama that he reject, denounce, etc., anyone is itself an abomination and both Russert and Hillary should be ashamed.

user-pic

Should we demand that Republicans reject Cheney?

Mister Answer Man replies: And all his works!

And all his empty promises ... er, premises.

It looks like voters would be more interested in Obama assuring us he doesn’t believe that we are in The End Times.

As we were driving down the road the other day, my five-year-old daughter pointed out a man wearing a sweater and pants with American flag print. It was the perfect opportunity to explain what it means to be a real American. We didn't stop to ask if he had on matching boxers and socks, but he was getting out of a big SUV. I'm wondering now if he could be our next POTUS. Anyway, I'm sure he would know how to properly renounce Farrakhan.

user-pic

All of this ignores the fact that it does not matter a whit what Mr. or Ms. Answer Man think, or D. Schlussel, or any of us for that matter; what matters is--What did Big Russ think? What ritual denunciations will satisfy his abiding interest in making sure that Democrats on the national stage prove that they are sufficiently domesticated? Big Russ, in his depth, worries about things like this for us all the time. Timmeh is merely his prolocutor. Sadly we cannot receive the wise insights of Big Russ directly lest they overwhelm the weak vessels that we inhabit on this mortal coil.

user-pic

Was it necessary to bring up "Big Russ"?

I'd rather be forced to boink Anne Coulter for 3 days than listen to Matthews and Russert discussing Timmeh's new book about Big Russ for 3 minutes.

user-pic

I'm not sure which response is more overpowering me atm John, laughter or nausea. LMFAO-ack!

That's a magnificent post. Made my day--thanks!

user-pic

Tune in next week for another episode of "What Obama really meant" when Answer Man again makes another sales pitch, er, comment in his favor.

user-pic

Mister Answer Man: Perhaps there's a way to support Hillary for the Presidency without endorsing Tim Russert's line of questioning on Farrakhan. Yes, I'm sure there is.

user-pic

Plagiarist!

TPM commentary you can Xerox writ large!!!

user-pic

At a town hall meeting a Conservative talk show host named Cunningham delivered a scathing attack on Obama. John McCain said 'I absolutely repudiate the words of Mister Cuningham.'

Russert; "But do you REJECT them, will you tell us right now that you reject Cunningham's words?'

user-pic

Does this mean I have to give the money back to McCain? Is anybody here a lawyer? He's been calling all day and I'm afraid to pick up the phone.

Lou Farrakhan aka markg8

On the off chance that Reverend Farrakhan should happen to read this comment and approve of it, I would like to take this opportunity to state in advance that I wholeheartedly reject his endorsement and hereby pledge in the future to limit my posts to comments unlikely to meet his approval. Should I slip up and say something he agrees with, I hereby retract it, effective immediately.

This policy shall be terminated statim if I hear that he agrees with it.

user-pic

Isnt't abjuration a bit better then renunciation?

Dictionary says that to abjure is to "renounce solemnly". No casual "Abrenuntio". Something more like

Therefore, desiring to remove from the minds of your Eminences, and of all faithful Christians, this vehement suspicion, justly conceived against me, with sincere heart and unfeigned faith I abjure, curse, and detest the aforesaid errors and heresies, and generally every other error, heresy, and sect whatsoever contrary to the said Holy Church, and I swear that in the future I will never again say or assert, verbally or in writing, anything that might furnish occasion for a similar suspicion regarding me; but that should I know any heretic, or person suspected of heresy, I will denounce him to this Holy Office, or to the Inquisitor or Ordinary of the place where I may be.
