Welcome to Skid Row

A brief break from the sex, lobbyists and politics for a reality a little less entertaining.

On Skid Row is a documentary about the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles from Good Magazine. It's a little tough to watch, so warning. This is the first part of five.

Please post the rest. This is amazing. What a reality check. Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew, great choice and shift of emphasis.

Thanks, Andrew.

One stunning statistic was that the average age of the homeless was 9.

That is ghastly.

Every time I hear about the suffering middle class I get a little ill.

Best, Terry

Maybe it's time to compile a "Third World America" shopping list of shockers. I'd add slavery to the list, euphemistically termed "human trafficking" to keep us from time-traveling back to the 17th Century. But homelessness? It's an old story - I remember being shocked when I learned that teenagers in Santa Cruz, CA were making a sport of beating homeless folks, resulting in a few homicides, and that was around 1980, as I recall - nearly 30 years ago.

This isn't to diminish the thoughtfullness of your bringing it back to our attention, Andrew. You know, it strikes me as the negative extension of the wealth/poverty axis: as the upper one percent reach a level of intolerable wealth, the lower one percent achieve intolerable poverty.
