John Bolton Compares Israel to North Korea

user-pic

The annual right-wing Israeli shindig known as the Herzliya Conference has just drawn to a close. The conference is organized by Uzi Arad, former adviser to Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, and has in the last years become an Israeli-American neo-con love-fest. Of course like on any good Fox News show, there is a generous sprinkling of non-neo-con folk who lend legitimacy to the gathering. The conference was co-sponsored by a far right donor, Sheldon Adelson’s Shalem Center, and the star performer was Ambassador John Bolton.

This year at least the conference was a little more open in wearing its politics on its sleeve—the program was officially held “in cooperation with the Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies, Shalem Center.” That Institute’s chair is Natan Sharansky (President Bush’s favorite author) and it’s sponsor—Adelson—is Sheldon Adelson of Freedom Watch infamy. Norman Podhoretz, Martin Kramer, and David Wurmser are just a sampling of the Herzliya speaker’s menu (presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani must have been short on advice this week).

But it was Ambassador John Bolton who really stole the show. He was firing off in all directions—Israeli and American—taking aim at the Israeli Prime Minister, media and military, and the US State Department and intelligence community to name just a few. But this line is undoubtedly the highlight, or rather low-point, of the Bolton rant. “Due to its government censorship the people of Israel can know what it feels like to be a citizen of North Korea” (he was referring to the censorship surrounding the Israeli strike on a Syrian facility last September).

You can read it here on the official Herzliya Conference website. Bolton went on to heap scorn on Israel’s media, military and government. Now I am not averse to taking a few pops at this bunch myself, but Israel as North Korea—I don’t think so!

Bolton inhabits that neo-con netherworld where philo-Israelism comes exceedingly close to being anti-Israel. Their ideal image of Israel bears little resemblance to the actual Israel that exists or the predicament that it finds itself in. They literally love Israel to death—being almost totally indifferent to the living, breathing Israelis who bear the consequences of the warrior policies that the neo-cons advocate. Their version of Israel is destined to live by the sword in perpetuity, should cede no inch of territory and is thrust into the front line of their clash of civilizations.

Most Israelis and most of their recent leaders have preferred a more somber approach—peace negotiations, territorial withdrawals, ceasefires, etc…what a terrible disappointment they have been to the Boltons of this world. It reminds me of the Zionist Christian Evangelical right whose supposed philo-Semitism bears more than a passing resemblance to anti-Semitism. The largest “pro-Israel” Christian lobby, CUFI, is led by Pastor John Hagee—a promoter of end-times theology (Jewish fate = conversion or death). Hagee has also written about the necessary historical role of the Nazis in encouraging the ingathering of the Jews to the Holy Land. With friends like these…

Back to Bolton, and as I mentioned, quite a few targets were getting served by the ex-Ambassador during his Israel visit.

Though his panel at the Conference was about “The Iranian Nuclear Threat,” Bolton spent most of his talk discussing North Korea.

Bolton’s point of departure was that “you look at a country (Iran) through its friends, its best buddies” [DPRK]—but his real target in doing so was to attack current US policy and to continue his campaign against the Chris Hill brokered deal with the North Koreans in the context of the Six Party talks. Bolton’s swipe at his former State Department colleagues was characteristically blistering.

Bolton focused on the Israeli military strike against Syria last September and the North Korea link, launching into a tirade against the censorship surrounding that strike. This is a continuation of his campaign to mobilize Congress to force a disclosure of what is known of that action—something the Israelis have been very keen to avoid. This line of argument, of course, also serves to reinforce the no engagement with Syria position—about which the Israeli leadership and senior military are most unenthusiastic but on which Bolton’s Washington crew continue to insist.

Predictably on Iran, Bolton claims that the new NIE gave the Iranians “free reign” to “proceed unmolested towards a nuclear weapons capability” and he prodded his Israeli hosts to “use military force to stop Iran.”

That was not all. Bolton then ran to the Israeli press a week before the final report of the Winograd Committee (investigating the Lebanon war of summer 2006) to weigh-in on the domestic Israeli debate and join the campaign against Israel’s Prime Minister. This was the opening to a headline story in the Haaretz paper during the week.

“John Bolton, who was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Second Lebanon War, rejects Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s version of why he launched a failed ground offensive during the war’s final days.”

Shalem Institute guiding patron Bibi Netanyahu, Conference organizer Uzi Arad, and Conference co-sponsor (and fanatical Bibi supporter) Sheldon Adelson all want Olmert out of office. John Bolton was doing their bidding.

Things went so far as to generate a rebuttal to the Bolton interview the following day in Israel’s longest circulation daily, Yediot Aharonot, written by none other than Israel’s foremost columnist, Nahum Barnea. Barnea produces minutes of reports from Israel’s UN mission back to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem contradicting Bolton’s claim and in fact showing that Bolton had briefed the Israelis that the UN Resolution did not address Israeli concerns—understood by the Israeli side as encouragement to launch the misguided ground invasion of the last weekend of the war in order to give the US some leverage to improve the terms of the resolution. In a display of Bolton’s professionalism as UN Ambassador and loyalty to his Secretary of State (not that we ever questioned those), Barnea recounts the following episode:

Gillerman [Israeli Ambassador to the UN] passed on verbally to the Israeli Foreign Ministry Director—General Aharon Abramovitch those parts of the message that he preferred not to put down in writing in the telegram: Bolton had told him that “Rice was selling Israel to the Europeans.” (Translated from Yediot Aharonot, Jan 24th, DL)

John Bolton did indeed damage Israel’s Prime Minister and Israel’s security—not to mention American interests—but not in his kiss and tell interviews with the Israeli press or his bitter speech in Herzliya—the damage was done when Bolton had power as Ambassador, and used it to help prolong a disastrous war.

The man is deranged. It enrages him when he world is not quite as he thinks. He assumes the Syrian strike was completely sensible, and likely righteous. Therefore it is wrong to suppress information that would obviously justify such action.

We should expect sense from wackos?

Considering how disloyal Neo-Cons are to politicians--I mean Bolton is actually criticizing the guy who appointed him to the UN post--why would any politician want to associate with these neo-losers?

...the Zionist Christian Evangelical right....

The "erzats-Zionist Christian Evangelical right" at best.  Zionism is about Jewish national self-determination in Israel.  If these people were Zionists in any real sense of the term, they wouldn't be trying so hard to bring Jesus back to Jerusalem.

The only reason the Christian Right cares about Israel at all is that Jesus did his thing in Jerusalem.  It isn't about their love of Israelis at all it is about their love of and desire to protect what they consider their "Holy Land".  The Christian Right is a pretty hateful circle of friends...if a person believes in their religious views they love them if they don't, and refuse to change their beliefs, those people are eternally damned in their "Evangelical" eyes.  They don't care if they push Israel to war and how many Israeli citizens end up being killed as long as the "Holy Land" is safe.  Beware of people who claim to be "friends" who espouse hate and war on your behalf.

Ever notice that Israel's best friends, the Evil-gelicals, don't actually support Jewish American politicians. They don't want a Jewish-American president. They support Jewish Americans becoming Israelis. With friends like that...

The forty year war for Greater Israel is ending in defeat. These parts of the speech from Olmert are interesting for those who have eyes and ears.

*******

Address by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to the 8th Herzliya Conference
23 Jan 2008
I have come here to discuss the future.
...
I would like to say something personal: for all my adult life in this country, I have been exposed to convincing arguments as to why not. During my ongoing experience in public life, since the beginning of the 1970’s - I was often occupied with presenting arguments as to why we must not make concessions. At all the decisive crossroads during the last 40 years, at points during which we had to compromise - we found backing and support from outside and within as to why it would be preferable not to compromise.

Like many and better than I, I also invested mental energy and sifted through the range of facts that would help me convince myself why it was forbidden and impossible, inadvisable and dangerous.
Now - 40 years later - seeing the unadulterated reality can no longer be avoided. I do not say this in order to invite a collective ceremony of self-flagellation. Our enemies greatly mistook us and engaged in horrendous terror, which has become a way of life. Their obstinacy was unforgivable, and we must wait and see if it has softened, and if they are ready for the historic compromise which is unavoidable. I am not certain it is so, but I am ready and want to try.

Now we must understand that we do not have time. Once we were afraid of the possibility that the reality in Israel would force a bi-national state on us. In 1948, the obstinate policy of all the Arabs, the anti-Israel fanaticism and our strength and the leadership of David Ben-Gurion saved us from such a state. For 60 years, we fought with unparalleled courage in order to avoid living in a reality of bi-nationalism, and in order to ensure that Israel exists as a Jewish and democratic state with a solid Jewish majority. We must act to this end and understand that such a reality is being created, and in a very short while it will be beyond our control.
...

I do not have the moral right to serve as prime minister of the Jewish people and the State of Israel if I do not take the risks, face all the obstacles and be exposed to the challenges involved in this exciting attempt.

Therefore, I have no intention of letting go, no matter the political and personal cost. Believe me, I am experienced enough and keen-sighted enough to see all the ties and collaborations of those swooping in with insatiable political lust on the blood of our sons, of those who assist from within and those who support from outside - and all for the purpose of taking away from our people its chance for a new horizon.

Our people - a people longing for an opportunity of light at the end of the dark tunnels which cloud our joie de vivre - is a wise people. It knows who speaks the truth and who does not. It knows who speaks from the heart and who speaks out of insatiable lust for authority and power.
And it knows that there is no substitute for what I am offering, cautiously and responsibly, but with boundless faith: to return to a reality in which there is no full realization of all our dreams of a large and broad country, but in which there is the chance - perhaps the best ever - of a Jewish, democratic state which lives in security, peace and with international support and in hope which does not fade.
Thank you.

It is clear that it's only Israeli disunity that is holding back the inevitable withdrawal from the West Bank, but the odds are going up that Bush will get his way and the war for greater Israel will be brought to an end this year because ‘the unadulterated reality can no longer be avoided.’

This revolution is region wide so the looming victory (very big but not complete) of the Palestinian people will also help to sweep away Mubarak’s nasty dictatorship as well.

It’s almost five years since the liberation of the Iraqi peoples set the region's swamp draining, unseen by the pseudo-left. Now that the emerging dry spots are exposing the 'anti-war' leaders as blind when it counts, I wonder what the explanatory cover stories will be.

While I wonder where the Middle East drainage project will be up to in another five years, I know that despite the work and any evident progress, we in the west will still be putting up with reactionary pseudo-leftists passing themselves off as leftists and busying themselves
'protecting' the masses from the nasty revolutionary left.

Stripped of all the Zionist verbiage, Olmert is saying that he is about to end the war for greater Israel! The defeat is evident.

Bolton is not worth talking about when ending the war is the real issue! Only the blind and the pseudo-left who think the Palestinians are doomed to live like this forever could be missing this stuff.
Patrick

I'm trying to remember all those people at the time of the debate over going to war with Iraq who said it was a good idea because it would lead to a Hamas-dominated Palestinian state in Gaza and I'm coming up empty. Maybe that's what you were saying at the time, Patrick, but this seems to me like the all-time champion ex post facto argument.

Mr. Burns: They were the same people who thought blockading Gaza would strengthen Abbas. You know, the 0-for-1 million crowd.

"Pseudo-left"? "Liberation" of Iraq? What the hell are you talking about, Patrick?

Olmert's reality-based assessment of what should be Israel's direction now in no way represents "defeat." It's the expansionist policies of the last 40 years themselves that have been clearly proven to be self-defeating. Consideration of the demographics issue alone shows they never would have worked in the first place, save an Arab genocide, and the decades of poor treatment of the Palestinians has damaged Israels moral standing in the world.

Nevertheless, I want to thank you for the excerpt from the Olmert speech. I had always thought of him as primarily a bureaucratic type of politician, but his words here are eloquent, inspiring and courageous.

"Fear not the path of truth for the lack of people walking on it." --Robert F. Kennedy

"That Institute’s chair is Natan Sharansky (President Bush’s favorite author) and it’s sponsor—Adelson—is Sheldon Adelson of Freedom Watch infamy. Norman Podhoretz, Martin Kramer, and David Wurmser are just a sampling of the Herzliya speaker’s menu (presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani must have been short on advice this week)."

These are dangerous, immoral people. The core of a fascist grouping.

The 'Syrian Nuclear facility' strike was a sham--the reason it didn't receive any attention, at least in the US, is that the 'Israeli intelligence' was stovepiped directly to Cheney, who refused to let any of the 16 legitimate US intelligence agencies vet it--yellowcake from Niger, anyone?

And if it were a nuclear facility, the USA would use it that to push for UN sanctions on Assad. But we haven't.....case closed.

Interesting to see Bolton's essentially calling Olmert a liar in regards to the UN negotiations put in the context of political interference in Bibi's favor.

Bibi's chances for another go at being PM diminish with the passage of time and the release of the next section of the Winograd report could be the last best chance to force Olmert out and another round of elections.

Bolton's comparison of the Israeli media to that of NK has not endeared him to the press or those keeping the lid on what really went on in regards to the Syrian adventure. Does he know that the Israeli media is legally liable for breaking the unprecendented embargo on news about that operation?

Another major item on Bolton's agenda is to spur on those who want Israel to attack Iran, supposedly alone. That's quite impossible of course, as an Israeli offensive would be impossible without US co-operation. Indeed, an early Israeli report (and others) on the Syrian action indicate that it was a joint IAF/USAF operation.

And to think Schumer and Clinton were sitting on the fence for this guy getting into the UN!! Yuck!

Divorced from reality. That is the only thing that comes to mind seeing Bolton's comments. I can't decide if that is good or bad. It is bad if major forces in Israeli politics endorse his approach. Maybe it is a good sign that rightwing Zionist are showing signs of desperation and becoming unglued before our eyes.

Just to backup your unglued point, David Wurmser, formerly employed in the OVP, gave this spin on Iraq to the same conference. According to Wurmser, it's not the surge that worked in Iraq, it's the sub-tribes.

Iraq is, was, and will remain the highest priority of this administration. Iraq is becoming much more of a good news story. I do not think it is due to the surge. I think it is due to internal politics in key areas. The key tribes (Sunni tribes) felt Syria was an agent of Iran. The Sunni tribes have Shiite sub-tribes, and until last year the Sunnis felt that we were in Iraq to put the Shiites in power. Since leadership is so closely tied to protection, they saw there was a real danger from Syria and Iran. Iraq is now moving in the right direction.

I haven't heard this explanation before. Of course, it's the first time I've heard of these Shiite sub-tribes, also. Guess Wurmser doesn't think that the quarter of a billion dollars the US has given the tribes had anything to do with their change of direction, either.

I see that you recall what I post over here related to the holding pattern of paying off these sub-tribes...

Now if you will, take a gander at my comment here to place this in an update to what we are still left with...

Under which walnut shell is the pea?

~OGD~

None of the walnut shells have a pea underneath them. But where did the Shiia sub-tribes to Sunni tribes come from?

"But it was Ambassador John Bolton who really stole the show."

It's a trivial point, but every time I see the words "John Bolton" preceded by "Ambassador", I want to vomit. I'd much rather see the words "Ambassador John Bolton" always preceded by something in parentheses, such as "(disgraced former)" or "(neo-con provacateur)". The unadorned honorific in front of this man's name brings shame on us all.

How about "recess-appointed ambassador"?

Ambarassador John Bolton?

One thing I find believable is that extending Lebanon invasion for several days -- which entailed heaping hundreds of thousands of cluster bomblets and a misbegotten ground offensive -- couldn't possibly be of diplomatic use. The standard policy on those matters is that USA vetoes anything that could pass in UN contrary to wishes of Israel, and hardly ever a resolution can pass that would satisfy Israel. A fresh batch of atrocities would not help.

As far as a secret object bombed in Syria, I understand that it was an underground facility, any trace of which Syria removed in one week. My bet would be a storage depot of WMDs that Saddam hid in Syria.

Why would Saddam hide weapons in a country that was at war with his in 1991? And why did he not tell his interrogators about this secret weapons stash before his hanging? Are you advising the Huckabee campaign? He seems he thinks that Jordan--yes, Jordan, the world's largest CIA station--was the site of the WMD storage.

Of course, every reasonable person knows that Saddam stashed them in Kuwait......ugh!

My point was that removing an underground facility without leaving a trace in the span of a week is possible if the facility is fictitious. Like the fabled storage of Saddam's weapons. The cave of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves would be another possibility.

With my inept snark, I am probably an ideal advisor for Huckabee.

I caught that, but it was kind of subtle.

Embarasser John Bolton?
