TPMtv Guide: Thursday, May 3
Today’s episode of TPMtv is a little different from the usual. You won’t be seeing any of Josh’s agreeable mug or hearing any of his wise words. This one is just a mix-tape of some choice snippets of President Bush and Press Secretary Tony Snow talking recently about the new standard of success in Iraq. Apparently it’s not so much a flourishing democratic society we’re fighting for anymore… No, we’ll be satisfied if normal Iraqis can merely live their lives in slightly less terror than they currently are.
We think the clips in this one pretty much speak for themselves.

Yes yes. This is the kind of thing I'd like to see more from TPMtv. Makes better use of the small viewing window - comes off less "YouTube" and more sophisticated.

This change in content from time to time, leavened with Josh's appearance is a good way to go. You might want to do an update on the USA business and other current preoccupations. Another selection could be Republicans on the war: flim flam artist type quotes.

So what level of car bombing is is viewed as successful? Apparently a high murder rate like in DC is tolerable.
Seriously, it looks like another ploy at an appearance of compromise from this administration in exchange of not having a timeline. I'm not sure where Bush is going with this,....either he is considering excepting some withdrawal verbage with benchmarks or he's scheming some talking point to claim success. I fear it's linked to the new approach of gaging violence by not counting the violence from carbombs.

If you can't meet the benchmarks, change the benchmarks.

If he is scheming some talking point to claim success, let him have it. The acceptable level of violence can be whatever he chooses it to be. Then claim victory and bring the troops home.

There are about 10-11 Americans for every Iraqi.
85 Iraqis were killed or found dead yesterday.
So current levels of violence in Iraq are at about 1/3 of September 11, per day.
Let's see if we can get that down to 1/4 and declare victory. No American would mind if there were 750 Americans killed per day.

Yesterday's statement that "the definition of success, as I described is, you know, sectarian violence down" was truly bizarre. It's like he's attempting to lower expectations while at the same time come to terms with the fact that he's created this incredible human catastrophe. I guess "come to terms" isn't right, exactly. He's rationalizing it. But watching him work this out in public is truly amazing. His brain is clearly squirming its way through the maze of ever-evolving illogic that is his rationale and justification for war.

If he ever came to terms with what he's done, it would be 72-point

It's really hard to tell which aspects of the two countries (US & Iraq) the president wants to establish where. Since the crime rate in the US has been rising due to the decrease in funds for police; and the FBI is too busy invading everybody's privacy to actually do any crime fighting, it's obvious that a higher level of violence is acceptable here, than used to be. So if we all carry a gun (as the NRA & wingers seem to prefer) Iraq's level of violence won't have to diminish to become acceptable - we'll just raise the level of violence here to equal theirs. We can claim victory and leave. That's the ticket...

I look for the veracifier vid, so keep 'em coming!
I think what make TPM and affiliates a better fit for me is, contrary to Kos and others, you tell us what's happening, then we comment. Great. I don't trust my own lying eyes because I don't know all the angles to all the stories coming out today. Many sites are putting up commentary from normal joes like me as content, which is fine I guess, but it's not always the whole story.

When is ANY level of violence in this country "acccpetable?" When is violence of any kind, anywhere, acceptable to anyone other than the Bushies?
This President's insanity must be becoming obvious even to the radical right.
