The Cost of a College Education Continues to Rise
One of the largest expenses faced by the American middle class is paying for college. Whether it’s trying to help finance their children's college educations, or paying off their own college debts, this expense costs middle class Americans thousands of dollars. However this burden just hit a new high today as the first American college raised its tuition and mandatory fees to over 50,000 dollars a year. If you put five children through college at this rate it would cost one MILLION dollars.
Right now it's only George Washington University that’s gone over the 50,000 mark. Now we know there are many better bargains for college out there: Places that offer great financial aid packages and many state's stellar public university systems – yet their prices continue to rise as well. But with GW leading the way, this landmark raise shows just how expense a burden a college education has become for the American middle class.

This is one of my pet peaves. In my opinion it is the financial aid that feeds the problem. The same thing is happening in health care. If the US government (the worlds deepest pockets) is willing to pick up part of the bill of course the bill will be higher. Charge what the market will bear. Look at Lazer eye surgery for the most part it is not covered by insurance and the prices keep dropping. Dental insurance is a misnomer because it is not really insurance it is just prepaid teeth cleaning. Most people can afford to get their teeth cleaned. Do you think that would be true if the US government was willing to pick up the tab. Every business does this If you hire a contractor to do some work on your house he knows how much your house if worth and can make a good guess at what you can afford. Does anyone here believe that if the government stopped subsidizing student loans that prices would continue to rise at this rate?

The cost of college is entertwined with our runaway healthcare costs. The states are struggling to keep up with the spiralling cost of Medicaid by looking everywhere to find another dollar.
My friend who is president of a Southeastern state university of 30,000 students tells me that the state required that he raise in-state tuition while giving him less money for each student. If we continue down this path we will completely block the middle class from a college education and we will let the seeds of our next generation professionals mold over and rot.
