Twenty States Introduce Resolutions Denouncing the Iraq Escalation
Given that the Iraq escalation is going to drain more National Guard and money resources from the states, over twenty states legislatures have now introduced resolutions condemning the escalation. I'm proud that Progressive States Network has been doing the lead organizing on this effort (you can see the campaign page at http://www.progressivestates.org/iraq) but the speed of the response by state leaders reflects the grassroots energy against this idiotic escalation across the country.
And the twenty states aren't just the usual suspects -- see here for the full listing of states but they include Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma and North Dakota -- but for a taste of what's happening in the states, check out this video from a legislative hearing in Kansas, where combat veteran Thomas Young testified.
Progressive States has set up a page where people can take action and email their hometown legislators, either to urge support for resolutions already introduced or asking for one to be introduced in their state. The campaign was organized by the Progressive States Network and began two weeks ago with a conference call with state legislators and national leaders. On the call Senator Ted Kennedy highlighted the importance of states’ input on the President’s proposed deployment of 20,000 more troops.
Steve Doherty and David Sirota, co-chairs of the Progressive States Network, explained the widespread legislative support: "For its speed and intensity, this effort is simply unprecedented. Congress cannot ignore the voice of states both red and blue in every region of the country. Americans far and wide oppose this escalation and these legislators are speaking up for the people they represent.”
