I thought Time magazine should have named him Person of the Year for 2006 instead of copping out.

I can't tell you how many times I now hear rueful references to global warming made during some surprisingly warm break in the weather. Next will be Jay Leno poking fun, not at those who say global warming is real, but at those who say it isn't. If he hasn't done that already, that is.

These are signs of a critical mass building in public consciousness on an issue--a necessary although hardly sufficient precursor to effective action being taken to address this paticular one, with all of the vested interests and automatic pilot societal and global tendencies standing in the way of doing so.

Al Gore was out there in the wilderness for years and years on this issue before things have gotten to this point. Just because he might be the first to tell you so doesn't mean he wouldn't be right about that.

Neo(no longer wooden)Al Gore is America's only choice for President in 2008. Gore highly intelligent,seasoned,presidential in demeanor,and-the magic phrase-highly electable

But two salient further justifications stand out in my mind.

1)Gore was, by any measure, the first major U.S. politician to go green. His movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was just nominated for an Academy Award. The environment will remain a major issue in 08.

2)Our nation needs to cleanse itself from its justifiable collective guilt for literally stealing the Presidency away from him in 1999 and handing over the highest political office in our land to his opponent who almost ruined our once great nation.

Now -how do we get Al Gore to run?

I can practically hear his acceptance speech now: "Hey, I didn't just warn the world about global warming, I invented global warming!"

Can we please let go of this "Nobel Prize nomination" fiction? These "nominations" have absolutely no weight and are not screened in any way. One can "nominate" Sean Hannity for the peace prize--or even Sean Hannity can "nominate" someone for the peace prize. Please, please, please, leave some credibility to Al Gore--if he claims that he's been nominated, he will only look like an idiot.

Actually, this isn't quite true.  Some goofball group has been circulating the word that Rush Limbaugh has been nominated, but that has been amply refuted over at Eschaton.

As compared with some other prizes, the Prize nomination and selection process is long and rigorous. This is an important reason why the Prizes have grown in importance and prestige over the years to become the most important prizes in their field.

Forms, which amount to a personal and exclusive invitation, are sent to about three thousand selected individuals to invite them to submit nominations. In the case of the Peace Prize, for example, any of the following people may be asked to make nominations:

• Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
• Members of international courts;
• University rectors;
• Professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology;
• Directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;
• Peace Prize laureates and/or board members of organizations that have been awarded the Peace Prize;
• Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee;
• Former advisers appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

Gore has been nominated as has been reported by 221 News Organizations at last count.   What I find most interesting about his nomination is that it was submitted jointly by two Norwegian Parliamentarians from opposite ends of the political spectrum. 

"I think climate change is this century's most important and most threatening environmental issue, and I think Al Gore has made a difference in putting climate change on the global agenda," Conservative MP Boerge Brende told Reuters.

Brende teamed up with a political opponent from the Socialist Left party, Heidi Soerensen, to nominate Gore for the peace prize by the February 1 deadline for nominations

Given the alarming report out of Paris and the report the American Enterprise Institute, funded by Exxon and one of the dark powers doing Bush's bidding offered cash to scientists to dispute the United Nations report.

Gore is one of the few persons with enough global recognition and personal integrity to combat the Oil Interests.  For this alone, he deserves the nomination, and perhaps the Nobel...we'll see who the other nominees are.
