The Surge
Prior to the President’s address to the nation on Wednesday, James Traub looked at how it might be received by Congress and the American public. He believed that Democrats “need to get over the impulse to oppose any course that might offer the President political advantage”. In response to the speech, Bruce Jentleson analyzed it line-by-line. He looked at much of what was said in terms of his prior post, stating that “if diagnosis isn’t right, prescription won’t be either.” Daniel Greenbaum asked two important questions — starting a debate about aspects of Bush’s plan that would possibly fail.
In Other News On America Abroad
* Ernest Wilson predicted that intellectual property rights within China will be better protected because a content producer within China is now suing a violator over it’s IPR. The case shows, Wilson argues, that “success in diplomacy, international trade or security hinges on knowing when these kinds of tectonic shifts are possible inside other countries, and then pressing for change. But knowing when these pivotal moments arrive requires listening attentively, not just talking loudly.”
