Right Wing Pundit Dennis Prager: No Problem With Child Predators
I think I have discovered one of the key differences between liberals and rightwingers. Liberals will not defend every action taken by a fellow liberal but rightwingers (not conservatives, rightwingers) will defend anything their team does.
This occured to me as I watched Larry King last night.
One of his guests was Dennis Prager, who is one of the Jewish community's very few extreme rightwingers.
There is nothing the rightwing does that Prager
don't defend.
For instance, Prager, usually quick to deem virtually anyone an anti-semite, defends Mel Gibson, saying that compared to Hillary Clinton he is a veritable friend of the Jews.
Of course, Hillary is anything but an anti-semite. But Prager had to invoke her because that is what mindless rightists do when they are in a corner.
He defended Bill O'Reilly's "war on Christmas" jihad of last year when O'Reilly and others on the right blamed Jews for commercializing Christmas and essentially ruining the month of December for Christian childen.
He defended Gibson's "Passion of the Christ."
He defends every rightwing Christian minister, no matter how bigoted, if Prager believes that this or that Elmer Gantry likes Israel.
But Prager hit a new low last night.
Larry King was leading a discussion on the Mark Foley case and Prager made clear that sexual hijinks with teenagers is not something that much concerns him.
"The matter bothers me but not politically. A congressman is given a page to nurture and take care of and not to try to have an affair with, with same-sex or opposite sex, so that bothers me. There's no question about it and a great deal in fact but, it doesn't bother me politically."
Later in the same show he criticized a Democratic candidate for Congress, Patti Wetterling from Minnesota, for making the child predator question an issue in her campaign. Wetterling is the mother of a teenage boy who was abducted by a predator 15 years ago and never heard from again.
In other words Prager is not much exercised about this issue.
But he is exercised about the issue of gay marriage. Go to his website and you'll find that Prager is obsessed with homosexuality and believes that gay marriage could represent the downfall of our civilization.
And not just gay marriage. Abortion. Feminism.
Affirmative action. Global warming activists. Environmentalists. GODLESS LIBERALS!!!!
You name it. You will not find a single issue in which the pious platitudinous Prager does not take the far right position, even when the position he takes is detrimental to his fellow Jews.
If I was the type who called fellow Jews self-haters, Prager would be on the list. But I won't stoop to that level.
But back to my question. Why are some far right rightwingers like that?
Surely Prager has some education and can learn the issues. Is it because these guys are like oldtime Stalinists and simply follow the party line.
Well, here's my answer. Some of them are party liners and can't think for themselves.
But the Pragers, Coulters, Malkins. Michael Savages (the right's lesser lights) are just in it for the money.
The more ridiculous their statements, the more books (or in Prager's case, pamphlets, speeches, and tapes) they sell.
For them American politics is a carnival and conservatives are just the suckers who pay a buck to see a two-headed bearded lady. For all their talk about patriotism, America is, for them, nothing but a cash register they can raid at will. Someone like Prager believes probably 10% of the stuff he spews. It's a racket.
It's sickening. But, the good new is that even the right is beginning to see through the act. They can tell the difference between a George Will, David Brooks or a Bill Kristol and a Prager/Coulter/Malkin/David Horowitz/Michael Savage carnival barker.
As for liberals. Say what you will about us. We are sometimes self-righteous jerks. (Rarely). But we just don't have people like Dennis Prager. Thank God (or whoever).
IN ORDER TO BE FAIR TO DENNIS PRAGER, the following is a statement he released last year after I attacked him for going to the media to accuse Jews of making war on Christmas. It is priceless.
**************
Jews who support the Christian right are "Uncle Jakes."
So says a pro-Israeli Jewish official in his recent column for the Israel Policy Forum, a pro-Israel organization. "Uncle Jake" is M. J. Rosenberg's term for Jewish equivalent of "Uncle Tom." Just as the left sees conservative blacks as traitors to African-Americans, so it sees conservative Jews as traitors to the Jewish people. I am the "Uncle Jake" most criticized in the Rosenberg column.
That a Jew on the left would use this term to describe Jews who support conservative Christians gives one an idea of how irrational, how hysterical are the arguments of the Jewish (and non-Jewish) left. And lacking a rational basis, they frequently rely on name-calling.
Speaking personally, I have been called many things in my life, but "Jewish traitor" is a first. For the record, and offered with obvious embarrassment at having to list these things about myself, here is a brief review of my Jewish activities:
From 1969 onward I was one of the leaders of the Soviet Jewry movement, beginning with being the national spokesman for the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, the leading activist group in that cause.
I have lectured in more Jewish communities in North America — federations, synagogues of all denominations, Jewish community centers — than almost any living Jew. And I have spoken at the national conventions of virtually every major American Jewish organization — including Hadassah, the General Assembly of Jewish Federations; the United Jewish Campaign; AIPAC; and the American Jewish Committee.
I co-wrote with Rabbi Joseph Telushkin perhaps the most widely used introduction to Judaism in the English language.
I am the recipient of the American Jewish Press Association's 2004 Prize for excellence in Jewish Commentary.
For seven years I was the director of the Jewish retreat center, the Brandeis-Bardin Institute.
I am a founder of a Jewish day school in Southern California.
I am the emcee of the annual Chabad telethon; I've been teaching the Torah at the University of Judaism for 25 years, and teach Torah at my Reform synagogue. And I have brought tens of thousands of Jews back to Judaism and Jewish identity — Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox.
How then does a Jewish writer call me, a man whose life has been so committed to the welfare of the Jewish people, a traitor to Jews?
The answer is simple: To many leftist Jews, a non-leftist Jew is by definition a traitor. It's as simplistic as that. To these Jews, "left" and "Jewish" are synonyms. Just as to many on the left, "left" and "black" are synonyms.
The use of this smear is the tactic of those who cannot argue. Blacks and whites who smear black conservatives such as Thomas Sowell, John McWhorter, Larry Elder, Walter Williams, and Ward Connerly as "Uncle Toms" do so because they cannot, or wish not, to engage them in intellectual argument. It's far easier to libel them than to debate them.
The same libel and intellectual shallowness characterizes the Rosenberg piece.
His major charge is that Jews who support conservative Christians are "Jews taking positions hostile to the Jewish people in order to stay faithful to some political agenda."
And what are these positions that are "hostile to the Jewish people"? Rosenberg enumerates them: "the entire Christian Right agenda: opposing abortion, poverty programs, progressive taxation, laws that protect gays, affirmative action, the environmental movement, and feminism.
Even if that portrayal of conservative positions were accurate, why are these positions "hostile to the Jewish people"? Because they are conservative positions! Again, to such minds, "left" and "Jews" are synonymous, and therefore "conservative" and "hostile to Jews" are synonymous.
If you think most abortions are immoral; that a lower tax rate is better for society, including the poor; that the problem of poverty in America will not be solved by the government spending trillions more; that marriage should not be redefined; that a race-blind society is a finer society and that race-based affirmative action hurts both the recipients of the lowered standards and the society at large; that we desperately need the oil from a small percentage of the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve because doing so will help us rely less on Saudi oil and won't hurt any caribou; and think that, in retrospect, the feminist movement (as distinct from the belief in man-woman equality, which every religious conservative I know holds) hurt more men and women than it helped — you are anti-Jewish.
Such shallowness is based in part on ignorance. For example, Rosenberg writes that "He [Prager] conveniently ignores the fact that Christian Right support for Israel is largely based on a religious belief that Christ will only return after Jews are all in Israel accepting the divinity of Jesus Christ."
That is the lie about Christians that the left spreads to prevent Jews from knowing the truth about Christian support for Israel: that it is rooted overwhelmingly in the beliefs that G-d promised the return of the Jews to Israel, that Christians are grafted onto the tree of Israel, that G-d blesses those who bless the Jews, that Israel is a humane democracy and its enemies are bloodthirsty and backward regimes.
To Rosenberg, conservative Christians are a caricature.
Rosenberg's charges that Jews who support Christian conservatives do so from nefarious motives and that Christians who support Israel do so from nefarious motives is typical of the left. They judge motives, not deeds. And the reason is clear. They are so certain of their moral superiority, they can only deduce that all those who differ with them are bad people. That's how a Jew who has devoted his life to the Jewish people can be called an Uncle Jake.

It's a whole crew of Elmer Gantry wannabes. F'ing hypocrites...each and every one of them from their pundits to their politicians. P.T. Barnum is another one of their role models too...

This kind of hypocrisy really defies logic, but we see it over and over again from the far right. I suppose it is mostly like the author suggests, that some of the most odious rightwingnuts are simply in it for the money. And that being the case, it is prima facie evidence that they are completely and utterly without morals, eithics or a soul of any kind. It also means they have never actually picked up a copy of the New Testament or any other actual religious text. If they had, they would recognize themselves as the type who were driven out of a certain temple at the end of a whip. This lack of a human conscience is puzzling as far as its origins go, but it is, sadly, simply a repetition of the worst human behaviour seen over the course of history.

Robert Altemeyer (whose work is explained in John Dean's new book) has done actual investigations of people like this. He has defined a specific personality type he calls right wing authoritanism. So your conjecture is correct. There is a direct correlation between conservative political viewpoints and the need to follow the ideological line.
A good summary of work on the entire area of the authoritarian personality here.

Here's the link for the Prager attack on Jewish liberals. Somebody just told me that it was obviously a parody by ME.

What you mean "rarely?" :-)
To provide a quite different perspective:
Dr. John Story raped dozens, possibly hundreds, of mostly Mormon females ranging in age from 5 ("she might as well get used to it") to 80. The generally false claim that psychopaths can pass polygraph exams with ease would be supported by one given the good doctor. He passed. He apparently believed the women and girls were asking for his good works. It seemed Dr. Story was motivated, at least partly, by a desire to punish Mormons for their heretical beliefs.
60 Minutes ran a very biased segment on the case calling into question the conviction.
Generally you could winnow out conservatives and liberals reasonably well I have found by asking their thoughts on the doctor.
Though liberals tend not to trust the courts, they seem far more likely to agree with the conviction. Law 'n order rightwingers are more likely to find the doctor was wrongly convicted. The effect is so pronounced that the women who testified against Dr. Story suffered grievously in their own Mormon community from Mormon elders and others supporting Dr. Story.
Chris Shays has demonstrated why he is a Republican I think.

It's pretty obvious that the likes of Prager understand that the best way to get people to reach in their pockets is to stir their passions - hate, afterall, is a passion.
That aside, something I read recently, somewhere, suggests that the Democratic party offers to VALIDATE a person's identity while the Republican party offers to GIVE you an identity - that of a "player." That seems to gibe with what you discuss in your post.

Holy crap, MJ.
It appears that those of you in discussions about forming an alternative to AIPAC are coming under attack from the Jerusalem Post's rightwing extremist virago, Caroline Glick. I'm used to her virulence, but the vitriol in her latest column is stunning.
She's calling Israelis to combat:
"BUT FOR all that, it is not too late to change course. The Jewish American anti-Israel lobby is scheduled to be launched on October 26. Now is the time for the Olmert government to forthrightly announce that the new lobby is not pro-Israel, but rather anti-Israel.
Even if the government does no such thing, Israel's citizens have a responsibility to explain to the organized American Jewish community and to its umbrella organization, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, that we, the citizens of the largest Jewish community in the world, view these groups as anti-Zionist. Israeli citizens should request an explanation for the inclusion of some of these groups in pro-Israel umbrella organizations like the Conference of Presidents when like their goal is to weaken Israel, to weaken Israel's alliance with the US and to strengthen Israel's enemies. Israeli citizens can and should send letters and e-mails to this effect to the Conference at its New York offices."

Wow. Teenage hijinks
I find it totally appalling that adults, like Prager, are willing to blame teenage children for the actions of sexual predators. It is the classic, testosterone driven psyche answer to forcing sex on a woman who was provocatively dressed, because she was "asking for it."
Reasonable adults know that teens are nothing but undeveloped minors caught in the vortex of their bodies hormone hurricane. They are impetuous, spontaneous and have no sense of their own mortality nor the gravity of their actions.
To justify predator behavior based on the victims response to being sexually aroused is simply reprehensible.

Methinks Prager protests too much about supporting Christians. People who follow the unholy alliance of conservative Christians and rightwing Jewish organizations feel both sides are cynically exploiting the other.

That pretty well sums up the Republican Party. They have not done one good thing for the average American, or for America in six years. What they have done is put too many 6 feet underground well before their time. While others die they wallow in the morass of their lies, obfuscations, greed, and criminal obsessions.

Of course its about money; fame and fortune. They're hustlers. Joe Mc Carthy hustled communism, Coulter hustles rage, William Bennett hustles morality, Savage hustles hate; just like Al Sharpton hustled racism. And apart from Sharpton, who do they hustle? The right wing troglodytes who vote Republican because the Republicans will get the ni**ers off welfare. Run for office on morality and values and once in office legislate on money issues.
These hustlers know there are a large number of Americans who not only thrive on bad news, but who also need an enemy to make their lives more complete. Many conservative talk show hosts, people like Rush Limbaugh, Ollie North, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly of FOX, and columnists like Cal Thomas, and many at The Washington Times, etc. have a gift for exploiting lower-middle class resentment, envy, and bigotry for their own political purposes. Knowing how easily led some are, they offer their readers and listeners overly simplistic, mindless banalities in a complicated world.
So, Mr. and Mrs. America, the next time you tune in to the conservative media, and Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Thomas or Jonah Goldberg, etc. offer you your daily dose of bad news as they're rounding up the usual suspects; liberals, senior citizens, women, minorities, environmentalists, the lame, and the poor, as the 'enemy du jour', you can stand there like a ghost pointing an empty sleeve and smirking as you build the gallows these hustlers use to hang you.

First, great blog. You tell it like it is, MJ, and each posting is original, insightful, and fun to read.
That said, this entry in particular is top-notch, because you've accurately assessed the fanaticism and hypocrisy of Prager and other right-wingers in the Jewish community. Fortunately, they (right-wing Jews) are a relatively small minority. And while some of them have proven to be influential in policy circles and in segments of the intelligentsia, Prager falls into neither category. He is an articulate simpleton. He has a small but devoted fan-base -- his listeners on the religious talk radio station (he was ousted from KABC) and some Fox News devotees. His biggest fan, though, is undoutedly himself. He's one of the biggest self-promoters out there. His website is nausiating: http://www.dennisprager.com/
As to Carolyn Glick, she is a right-wing hack, who produces consistently mediocre work tinged with a good dose of jingoism. She's not to be taken seriously, though I did see her yesterday on the Israel Broadcast Authority's English news. Her analysis of the implications of North Korea's nuclear testing made Bill O'Reilly's "talking points" feature seem sophisticated by comparison.
As a member of the Jewish community, I'm truly embarrassed by these guys -- but what they stand for and by what they do.

Thank you for trying.
I am not much into sloganeering. Sorry about that.
In brief, both conservatives and liberals often decree guilt or innocence based on ideology rather than facts.
Liberals tend to be less eager to drown the accused witch to see if she is innocent but are not certainly opposed to the drowning.
