Clinton Saves Dems...Again. Perfect Storm Brewing.

user-pic

Six weeks out and the election is beginning to feel like it might just be a Democratic sweep.

Sunday was one of those days on which everything went right for Democrats. First, the news of the leaked NIE report. And then President Clinton helped repair the hole in our collective hearts that has been there since George W. Bush started using 9/11 as a political opportunity to bash Democrats as cut-and-runners and worse.

Most of us didn't have any idea how angry we are until President Clinton expressed what everyone of us feel. All through the land we huddled in front of our computers feeling the kind of relief that only comes when you've been down so long, you don't know which direction up is.

It was like the Sox sweep of the Yankees in 2004, except our suffering felt like it had lasted longer than 86 years.

Clinton has given us the rallying cry and the weapons to win this election.

History will record that the Democrats began the comeback to power on Sept. 24, 2006.

Yesterday, Bill Clinton was FDR! But, unlike the generations of Democrats after 1945, our FDR is back in fighting mode and, happily, looking better and healthier than ever.

Go Champ.

Here, here. I've been without television for just over six months now, so I was definitely one of those folks huddled in front of my computer to watch Clinton's spanking of Chris Wallace and FOX. I had first caught a posting somewhere about how FOX was selling this as "Clinton goes wacko!" or something such and, indeed, the few seconds they chose to highlight on the rightwing blogs, taken out of context, did look a little bit like he was ready to throttle that smirk right off of Wallace's face. Wallce looked a little shaken.

I watched the whole segment yesterday and, you're right, the Big Dog can still bring it!

I just hope our current slate of elected Democrats can finally stop runnng from Clinton. It's clear the soon-to-be Republican opposition are already getting a head start on the frantic fleeing!

A registered Indpendent since the day I turned 18, I have for so long looked for a reason to finally join the Democractic Party. I was planning to wait until after this next cycle, not just to join while the joining is good but, more importantly, to see how the Party handles their new-found power.

I don't know that I can join if the first action of the New Majority is to initiate Impeachment proceedings. Though, personally, I'd like to see all the neocons die slow deaths in cold cells but, if there is still to be a Democratic Party in 2008, they've got to move in a more positive direction.

You expressed my feelings exactly.  I've had plenty of disagreement with Clinton's policies over the years, but there is no doubt he towers over any other political leader on the scene today.  Now let's see if the weak-kneed Dems can take at least one page -- or even a paragraph! -- out of his playbook.

Some here (including me at times) have already convicted the administration of impeachable offenses but I know of no elected Dem that has called for impeachment directly. John Conyers is careful to specify hearings as the needed step.

I have been screaming "FIGHT BACK!!!" to any fellow liberal who would listen to me for over a year and a half here.  And Bill Clinton did...KUDOS TO HIM!!!  The wingers have their panties all in a bunch over this because they know the power of Bill Clinton.  Now with the NIE report we have a weapon to fight with too...

In the words of the 80's heavy metal band Twisted Sister...

"OH...WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT, NO...WE AIN'T GONNA TAKE IT, OH...WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!"

Much as I would like to see it, I agree that impeachment is not a priority. I also agree that it is not likely to be the priority of Democrats. The better course would be hearings on Iraq, plus a lot of positive legislation most of which Bush would be forced to veto by his paymasters.

Kill the taxcuts on the rich only and spend the money on reducing the deficit, phasing out the doughnut hole on prescriptions (and forcing collective bargaining on price), research on energy efficiency and alternative energy sources, and give more people help on meeting the cost of higher education, for instance.

I just called one of my Senators and demanded that he get the NIE released. The phone critter was clueless. That's sad. Let's join Clinton in FIGHTING BACK. Take Josh's advice and start calling.

Perhaps it is time for Clinton to make a dramatic break from decorum and start openly criticizing the GOP/White House in the exact manner in which he did to Chris Wallace.

I realize that he already stumps for Democrats in a generic manner on the campaign trail, but perhaps he would be more useful if he took his brilliant combination of skills and knowledge and used them on behalf of the nation and his party.

The status quo is so dire that I doubt that anyone other than the 33% of country that supports Bush no-matter-what would care that Bill is doing in 2006 what, in hindsight, he should have done in 2000.

For those who want to see an historical example of someone fighting back I would recommend the documentary U.S.A. v John Lennon. Not only does it remind you, if you need reminding, that Lennon was talented and also committed to peace and justice. The film also shows that as mecurial as Lennon could seem he was not a quitter and that he urged getting up and keep on trying even after failure.

The movie also shows a forerunner of today, Nixon, Hoover, and MItchell trying to punish and silent John Lennon by tryingto deport him while Yoko was in a custody fight for her daughter.

Lennon, and his lawyer did not rollover but kept fighting the deportation orders. The fight continued until secret documents surfaced showing how high up in the government violation of the law and rules went just to get him.

MJ,

...and the election is beginning to feel like it might just be a Democratic sweep.

Keynahora!  This is too much like calling a no-hitter before the 9th inning.

The logistics of impeachment are such that you'd have to find a way to impeach Cheney either prior to or simultaneously to impeaching Bush, and that this is only worth doing after we take Congress. If the party were to agree on this as explicit strategy now it would mean the current election would be framed as "Bush (God-serving Texan) vs. Pelosi (the San Francisco liberal woman)." As much as Pelosi would make a superior president, having any impeachment plan in place (even in the background, were it outed) would cause a Republican landslide based on the Bush-Pelosi matchup - so as much as in a sane world Bush would be impeached already, it would be terrible strategy to call for it now, and the Dems in office are not that bad at strategy.

I worry about the Republican's 72-hour get-out-the-vote program. If they can get Santorum reelected in Pennsylvania then they can manage to keep their House majority as well.

I am not ready to believe yet. October is only days away and there is going to be another "fear attack" by the administration.

Isn't it amazing that the point of view that Clinton's FauxNews actually made him look good is missing from the early MSM reviews? In another TPM blog on this subject, I mentioned that most MSM reporters suggested that Clinton should have towed the line and given a brief response.
This is the view expressed on Howard Kurtz's CNN media show yesterday. Similar views were expressed today by John Meacham of Newsweek on MSNBC's Imus, and a National Review editor on CNN. Only Andrea Mitchell, who came later on Imus tried to (meekly) suggest that since some viewed Fox as part of the vast right wing conspiracy, and would feel Clinton's response was justified. She then quickly added that she felt that Chris Wallace and Britt Hume were fair reporters.
I don't watch Fox that often, but it does seem to me that Fox reporters and analysts feel free to bash Liberals and the Liberal Press. I have yet to hear Kurtz, Andrea Mitchell or others even suggest that Fox might be tilted a little in the GOP's favor.
I will probably watch Obermann to see his take on the Clinton interview. I expect that Beck, Scarborough, Carlson and obviously FauxNews will continue the Clinton was out of order framing of the interview. CNN will be largely non-committal, but may offer some opposing views this evening.
Welcome to corporate media

I know many people here long ago wrote off Howard Kurz at Wapo, but still....his talk show over the weekend and espeially his smug on-line column today ("Media Watch: Clinton's Finger-Wagging Moment") show how utterly deaf he is to anything resembling the ethical side of the issues and the politics of the right. He credulously qutoes Chris Wallace speaking with such injured innocence that one wonders if Kurz has ever had insight into how corporate media works. It's the worst I've seen for him. He's become an unconsionable defender of the Bush establishment....or, as the Japanese say, he's got cement for brains. Probably both.

Join Clinton in fighting back. Call your US Senator and Representative and encourage them to get the 2006 NIE released before the election. You know, the one that shows the GOP Iraq war has endangered the USA, not made it safer. The NIE Bush has been covering up for months.

This is a no-lose deal. If they release it, it shows them up as liars and worse. If they refuse to release it, they are covering up. If they say the full report is more nuanced than made out by the NY Times, then they better prove it by releasing it.

Call your Senators/Rep now. Put the pressure on.

Clinton emerging from his bipartisan shell to take on Faux News is welcome and timely. This year's election is the time when he can do the most good--he will be viewed as hopelessly biased toward his wife's interests in '08--particularly in states like Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and Virginia.

He does a better job than most in triangulating the ambiguities and contradictions of the position of Democratic (original) supporters of the Iraq war; many of the candidates in that part of the country would welcome his support.

Consensus Democratic Position on Iraq
1) We would not have invaded Iraq the way the Bushites did.
2) We would not have occupied Iraq in the way they did.
3) When we gain power in 2009, we will move swiftly to extricate our combat forces. Until then, we will support their efforts and seek to direct them where they can have some positive effect.

see http://chinshihtang.blogspot.com

I just watched the full interview. It was obvious that Clinton had anticipated the question and was ready to pounce. I sort of felt sorry for Chris Wallace. It was clear he had never had a guest out "fox" him so badly. Of course, since the guest was Bill Clinton he couldn't rely on cutting to save him. He had to ride the interview to the ground. His response to Clinton's assertion that he never ask such questions of Bush people was weak, so weak Clinton smirked while driving the point home.

The right wingers have called Clinton's performance a lot of bad things in hopes we won't watch, but by all means watch Clinton. He rocked. Too bad there aren't any other Democrats capable of taking over an interview. Howard Dean maybe, but not often.

Arianna speaks:

But instead of popping champagne corks, let's make use of this moment by stepping back and giving it some context. What can we learn from what happened?

More specifically, what can Bill Clinton learn? That the bipartisan love-in he's been engaged in over the last several years has resulted in jack-squat.

...All of Bill Clinton's tireless "bipartisanship" has been of no benefit to him, of no benefit to the country, and has only benefited George Bush and the right-wing.

It's an important point, one that Joe Lieberman and the Dem side of the Gang of 14 need to learn even more than Clinton.

I'm glad Clinton came out fighting, but the champagne and talk of a "sweep" really needs to wait until November 8.

Dissent Protects Democracy.

I think Huffington's not being fair, as it implies he was compromising to win favor and should know now how futile that was.  He was pursuing bipartisan initiatives in areas such as disaster relief for which they were appropriate. When his record came under attack, he treated it without boasting but honestly and well.

Clinton interview was also a reminder of why the right hates him so much.

Clinton is a fighter. You punch him, he gets up, punches you right back.

The GOP and their media handmaidens don't like that. They want all Democrats to behave like Joe Lieberman. They want Democrats to constantly apologize for being Democrats, trash their own and beg "please don't hit me". That is Liebermanism. Democrats will not win again unless they purge themselves of Liebermanism.

Let's face it, both Bill and Hillary have been riding that Centrist line and been leaders in the DLC for over 10 years now.

It is time for all the Dems who ride this center in the hopes of sowing votes, to come back to the REAL Liberal party.

Wow, you sure are optimistic. It's way too early to even predict Dems taking either House, but it's nice to fantasize.

Clinton finally said some of the things we wish the Dem handwringers would've said years ago, but MSM will spin it as an "angry" Dean-esque interview.

Impeachment is not on the minds of the Democrats in Congress. Even serious hearings into crimes by this administration seem to be off the table. It was great to see Clinton fighting back, but the utter absence of fight from the Congressional Dems is appalling.

Apparently, the Dems are rolling over on the “compromise” torture bill and the Specter bill on NSA spying. Both of these bills grant historic powers to the President. These bills enable Constitutional infringements on people’s rights and (along with the WCA amendments) grant immunity for past crimes. After all they gave away with the Patriot Acts, Congress is going to empower this President, who has contemptuously abused his authority and tried to seize "Executive" power more than any president in history, to torture and spy on Americans.

The worst thing about this is that these bills set an unheard of precedent. A president can break the law and then have Congress retroactively change that law so that no wrong-doing has occurred. Whether Dems take control or not, it is a sad state of affairs for this country.

What amazes me is the willingness of congress to surrender so completely to the President. I might be wrong, but I think a surrender so total is simply unprecidented in American history. Whatever the President wants, the President gets.

The GOPs GOTV effort relies on workers. If you and EVERYONE in the blogosphere were to boycott blogging for 72 hours, we could easily match them. It really is that simple. There's no magic formula for GOTV other than getting volunteers.

Also note that Clinton's performance had nothing to do with him being southern and nothing to do with him being "centrist". It had everything to do with FIGHTING BACK. Now, if we could only get the Clintons to fight for us as hard as they are willing to fight for themselves!

From what I've read that is only part of it. Old fashioned GOTV was brute force, find the precints where you have 60-40 or better support and target getting the turnout high there.

The Dems still do it this way, the right uses much more sophisticated targeting to find their specific voters. I thought it was an article here on the Cafe that talked baout it, they have data bases so they can find the one likely Bush voter in a neighberhood of Kerry supporters for example.

Senate intelligence leaders: Bush should release assessment on terror trends

WASHINGTON – The top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee urged the Bush administration Monday to declassify the most recent, high-level intelligence assessment on global terror – a report that has given new fervor to the election-year debate about how the Iraq war has changed security threats.

Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said the American people should be able to see a public version of the report and draw their own conclusions about its contents.

Clinton's fight back was good to see, and helps the Democratic party very much, even though it shames the other Democratic politicians who haven't been able to sit up (forget stand up!) against the Bush administration.

However, no one should lose sight of the fact that Clinton was fighting about the past, about what various people did years ago. This is the easy fight. What is needed is for people to fight for the future, for what the US should do in the middle east.

On this point, almost all of the Democratic party politicians are not fighting Bush, and the liberal party line is that they're not fighting Bush because they lack courage and backbone. It may be, but I see little evidence of this. What I see is that the Democrats aren't fighting Bush about the middle east because at bottom they agree with him; their differences are over style and details.

Bush's goal in the middle east is to extend and strengthen US hegemony over the area and its oil. The Democrats' complaints are that Bush's tactics are counterproductive. They're right, of course, but they don't repudiate the goal. The Democratic party argues that it could extend and strengthen US hegemony over the middle east and its oil better than Bush and the incompetent neocons. I've no idea, but as long as the Democrats share Bush's goal, they will inevitably be drawn into savage, immoral conflicts in the area because the people in the middle east don't want their land and oil controlled by Washington, and they will fight to the death to oppose it.

This situation presents real challenges to the US and we need alternative views about how to meet these challenges.

Peter Miller

The NIE is clearly relevant to what is happening, but I would be very hesitant to release, without some review and redacting, the entire document. NIE's get relatively wide distribution in the government and tend not to be at an extremely high classification, but most I've seen, especially older ones when the historic context is known, have sensitive references.

Those sensitive references, however, tend to be in the background material, and most of the conclusions tend to be releasable.

Oberman just unloaded on Bush on MSNBC. In a special commentary he ripped GW a new one for attempting to blame Clinton for 9/11. Keith pointed out that GW did not make a concerted effort to track down Osama.
He lashed out at GW, the bungling of Iraq, ABC's Path To 9/11, torture and a whole host of other GW misdeeds.
If you can catch the rerun, you owe it to yourself to do so. (If they leave the Special Commentary intact).
I wonder if he's still employed.
True TV history was made tonight!

I agree. He was brilliant. The question is -- will he get into an "accident?" I am as worried about Keith as I am about my voting machines. He is the only voice!

Same thing Daschle did on the Iraq war, "so we could get back to talking about the economy."

It was boneheaded then, it's boneheaded now.

NBC teased the interview this evening as an example of Clinton’s “famous temper.” I mean, WTF? Clinton was fired up and adamant but, at least once, he was smiling and slapped Wallace on the knee. Of course, they did concede (courtesy David Gergen) that it wasn’t that bad as far as Clinton’s “famous temper” goes, but that only reinforced the frame in the viewer’s mind. I guess if the media is complicit in rewriting the “path to 9/11” (just as they were complicit in framing the path to Iraq), they are not going to play up criticism of that.

Trader Clinton sounded just like he did when he said, I did not have sex with that woman and lied to over 200 million Americans and blamed the vast right wing conspiracy for his problems, that's exactly what he did in the interview on Fox, the greatest truth in news today. If you listen to what trader clinton said, he blamed everyone else for his failed 8 years of reign and failure, he even admitted it. This is the idiot I blame for what's happening now, but he would rather play with monica and let the U.S. burn. How come abc, nbc or cbs never ask clinton questions like that, because they are all liberal communists like clinton. Go Fox, keep up the great work.

"Trader" Clinton?

Are you objecting to his policies on Free Trade?

The rest of your post is unintelligible. Have you ever heard of Richard Clarke?

I suggest you listen to the Country's only actual specialist on terrorists, rather than Rush Limbaugh.(a drug addicted chicken hawk)

Even Chris Wallace, on Fox, acknowledges Clarke knows his stuff

The Dems seem like a one person party, OK, two, but one of those can't stand for President as he's been Prez twice.

You should be almost as ashamed of yourselves as Repugs should be of themselves.

The American I new seems like the Atlanis of old - AWOL.

I miss it.

Regs, Shaggy

How come abc, nbc or cbs never ask clinton questions like that, because they are all liberal communists like clinton. Go Fox, keep up the great work.

And, of course, it's Bill Clinton who is "unhinged."

Don't overlook the media ability to find the delightful "middle ground," just as with Swift Boating  After the initial reports making the story about Clinton's temper, today it's all space for replies, an article in which Rice simply denies everything he said and another with some mixed reports as to how accurate it'd be to speak of a plan to take out Al Qaeda. (Scheuer says none, another source says no shortage of multiple plans.) I'm in a "you can't win" mood today.

John

http://www.haberarts.com/

Yes, I saw the commentary on Scarborough Country, as well.

Thank you, drive thru.

That's just looney nonsense. While Clinton's bi-partisanship has not helped those in the Democratic Party who it seems have been unable to help themselves (what, they can't do anything without Clinton hoisting them on his shoulders and carrying them?), anyone who paid any attention at all to the entire interview and what 15 minutes of the interview was supposed to be dedicated to would plainly see that Clinton's bi-partisanship has been CENTRAL to his ability to raise over 7 BILLION DOLLARS in committments to his Clinton Global Initiatives. Yep, Arianna, NO benefit. To anyone but George Bush and the right-wing. Arianna seems incapable of ever making a point without blowing it so completely out of proportion that the point ends up missing the mark completely.

clinton was always unhinged, he gave the chinese secrets to win his failed presidency. The truth is finally coming out about how clinton betrayed his country. It's funny how he can still lie to you people and you still fall for his crap. I hope we see more of unhinged clinton, he will help keep communisum(Dumacrat party) from getting back in office. The nose of clinton is still growing with more lies, he did absuloutly nothing about terrorism, nothing!!!!!, go back and read about how many terrorists attacks that happened under dumacrat clinton, and there was no response, execpt for bombing an asprin factory. I take that back, he did say I feel your pain. The only reason why clinton did anything that resembled something good is because the Republicans controlled the house and senate, clinton had no choice but to sign in law the welfare reform, his own party (Dumcrat party) didn't like it.

I have heard of Richard Clarke, a clinton appointee, but clinton did not listen to his own advisor, again a failure, you keep sticking a foot in your mouth every time you stick up for dumacrat clinton.

It's the country protecting us from people like you that want this country in the hands of communisum and to help the terrorists.

I'm sorry, but where does one find Marxist-Leninists these days, which I assume you mean when you refer to "communisum"? Cuba may be under the Endangered Species Act.

I would be absolutely fascinated to hear your explanation of how jihadists and Leninists have common goals.

You are obviously clueless. Clarke served under Reagan and Bush's Dad.

Now run along with the other Liberkids. It's past your bedtime and the adults want to talk.

clinton is still growing with more lies, he did absuloutly nothing about terrorism, nothing!!!!!

Are the exclamation points indicative of how many times you cut High School English, per week?

Dude, the actual government record speaks for itself. You are accusing Clinton of the actual thing Bush did.

Bush felt it was more productive to "cut brush" than to respond to a PDB titled "Bin Laden determined to strike within the United States". As a matter of fact, Bush felt it more productive to "cut brush" rather than take care of the gulf states during Katrina. No other President has ever been so callous and clueless. Ever.

You, as well as your fellow braindead freepers, were obsessing on Monica's blue dress and accusing Clinton of obsessing on bin Laden and "wagging the dog." he actually had to fight the right wing to enact legislation to support the "war on terrorism."

You folks have a lot to answer for, and your fellow citizens are obviously upset. Look at Bush's approval ratings. Outright lies juat don't work for most people. (the majority that managed to attend those High School English classes.)

Is the John Birch Society alive and well? Strike!

Chad Mitchell Trio Lyrics - The John Birch Society Lyrics

by Michael Brown

Oh, we're meetin' at the courthouse at eight o'clock tonight
You just walk in the door and take the first turn to the right
Be careful when you get there, we hate to be bereft
But we're taking down the names of everybody turning left

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society, help us fill the ranks
To get this movement started we need lots of tools and cranks

Now there's no one that we're certain the Kremlin doesn't touch
We think that Westbrook Pegler doth protest a bit too much
We only hail the hero from whom we got our name
We're not sure what he did but he's our hero just the same

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Socialism is the ism dismalest of all
Join the John Birch Society, there's so much to do
Have you heard they're serving vodka at the WCTU?

Well you've heard about the agents that we've already named
Well MPA has agents that are flauntedly unashamed
We're after Rosie Clooney, we've gotten Pinkie Lee
And the day we get Red Skelton won't that be a victory

Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Norman Vincent Peale may think he's kidding us along
But the John Birch Society knows he spilled the beans
He keeps on preaching brotherhood, but we know what he means

We'll teach you how to spot 'em in the cities or the sticks
For even Jasper Junction is just full of Bolsheviks
The CIA's subversive and so's the FCC
There's no one left but thee and we, and we're not sure of thee

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society holding off the Reds
We'll use our hand and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads

Do you want Justice Warren for your Commissar?
Do you want Mrs. Krushchev in there with the DAR?
You cannot trust your neighbor or even next of kin
If mommie is a commie then you gotta turn her in

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Fighting for the right to fight the right fight for the Right
Join the John Birch Society as we're marching on
And we'll all be glad to see you when we're meeting in the John
The John, the John Birch So- ci- i- teee
