From my memory -- Nightline 8/29/2006 "Terry Moran in New Orleans"
Moran: How much have real estate prices increased since Katrina?
NO Developer: (Silence)
Moran: 50%?
NO Developer: Around that. They've come down a bit since the Spring.
Not too bad, eh wot?
Can you be a little less cryptic? You can't possibly be saying that because the 20% of houses that didn't flood are in demand (because nobody else has a place to live) that things are going well? Please tell me you're not saying that.
Put it this way. Seems like a certain segment of the community is enthusiastic about the future of New Orleans. Indeed, sounds like this bunch is not just "OK" but AOK.
Well, I now own one of those dry houses, along with a whopping mortgage and an home insurance rate well over 1%. And my utility bills (already up 50% since the flood) may go up another 150%.
Whoop-t-fucking-doo.
Yes, people with dry houses are making money if they want to sell them, but there aren't that many for sale. And you can't get insurance to buy a flooded house.
Things are definitely Not OK.
We're definitely not okay. I drove around over the Labor Day weekend and filmed the city's lack of progress. I"m not much of a film maker, but if you're curious or want to send it along to people that claim New Orleans is progressing, check it out at http://katrina.frobba.com
