The South

user-pic

You may remember those blessed days when administration officials were able to argue that though Baghdad and the surrounding areas were in chaos, most of Iraq was calm and stable. Well, things have gone down the drain in the south, too.

The article you've linked to is dated 2004. Is this a mistake?

Presumably matt meant to point to this article? from today?

"In once calm southern cities such as Basra and Karbala, a Shiite holy city, fighting between Shiite militias and U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces, as well as among rival Shiite militias, appears to be on the rise. Meanwhile, northern cities such as Mosul, which had faced constant attacks, are experiencing new waves of violence along ethnic and political fault lines."

"The more things change, the more they stay the same."

I suppose it is safe to say that things are going south in the north of Iraq and north in the south of Iraq?  It's a crying shame that the press refuses to report all of the good news from Iraq.
