Abandonning Joe
It's hard for me to know exactly how persuasive Jon Chait's column breaking with Joe Lieberman would be to the implicitly intended audience of liberal hawks, but the argument certainly seems correct. At this point, Lieberman's become counterproductive to the point-of-view he's most associated with and liberal hawks would do well to wish him off the stage.

Chait rarely makes much sense, and this column makes even less sense than usual.
Why ever would Joe drop out of the general election? His staying in the election does zero harm to the Democratic Party, since Connecticut will be represented by a Democrat either way. So where's the harm in him staying in?
Joe was never running to uphold the honor of liberal hawks or anything like that. Like every politician, he was running to be the best representative of his state's people.
And, ya know what, according to the latest poll, more Connecticut voters think Joe would best represent them than think Ned would.
Bottom line is that Connecticut wants Joe, not Ned.

Not sure it really constitutes a "break" with Lieberman, despite the blogosphere's attempts to tar all TNR writers with the same Lieber-feather. Chait's recent columns have been more about how stupid the big liberal blogs are (present company excepted, I largely agree), and not how great Lieberman is.
