Less Is More

I've criticized Max Boot in the past for proposing that we implement "never gonna happen"-type policies in Iraq and then just kind of punting, so it's worth noting that to his credit today's column takes a different path. Once more he argues for a dramatic increase in troop levels, but then he acknowledges that this has become incredibly unlikely and that as an alternative we should withdraw most of our troops and leave behind a 50,000-strong force. I'm not super-enthusiastic about that idea, either, but it's a step in the right direction.

Why aren't you enthusiastic -- 50k is still too many? Any drawdown or strategic redeployment will involve fewer U.S. troops, but the likelihood that the number will be zero any time in the near future, even if we decide to mostly get out, is exceedingly low.
