The Other Shoe
Of course, for all hell to truly break loose would require not Israel fighting with its neighbors, but further deteriation between India and Pakistan. I hope the G8 leaders can spare some time to try and work something out on the subcontinent.

I think it's clear that the G8 will be consumed by the feud between Bush and Putin (or perhaps that should be Bush, Cheney and Putin), and the situation in Israel, as well as more threats about Iran.
I doubt anybody will be thinking about Pakistan and India.
Actually, since Israel "fighting with its neighbors" is actually intended to drag the US into attacking Syria and Iran, and since if THAT were to happen, the likelihood would be Islamic jihadist revolution in Pakistan, I'd say that Israel's and the neocons little moves right now are the best way to get "all hell to break loose."
Not to say that Israel cares about Pakistan and India or even that the neocons do (although they probably do), but widening the ME war is not a good sign for keeping Pakistan's government stable.

Some have said the US (or neocon) objective in Iraq and the ME, is to turn every country into a failed state and create a general chaos. If so, then you'd expect the US to be behind Israel's latest madman aggressions. But Bush is acting as if he doesnt really know what to do, asking Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan for restraint. Billmon thinks Frankenstein's monster has escaped the lab here, and is out of control.
I think the focus of "all hell breaking loose" is more apt to be US forces in Iraq, and oil, than any nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan. When other nations knock each other out, standing on the sidelines is good policy.

I think Bush is doing what you would expect him to do if he was supporting - or didn't care one way or the other about - Israel's position, i.e., nothing.
Of course, Rice had to make some sort of request for Israel to restrain itself - it would look bad otherwise.
Word is she got told to shut up and stay out of it by Israel - and probably Bush and Cheney as well.
