News of the Day: Late Edition
Italy has issued arrest warrants for four Americans, including three CIA agents, in relation to the kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric named Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, also know as Abu Omar. The warrants were issued at the same time as two Italian intelligence officials were arrested for their part in moving Nasr out of Italy.
Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is narrowly leading conservative Felipe Calderon in today’s recount of Mexico's presidential vote. Lopez Obrador, an anti-poverty campaigner with a long history of leading street protests, is refusing to accept the preliminary numbers, citing many irregularities, including large numbers of missing votes. Lopez Obrador has demanded a full manual recount of the 42 million votes cast on Sunday, arguing that "The stability of the country is at stake."
Israel prepared for the expansion of its campaign in Gaza, ordering forces further into Palestinian territory. The changed scope of the incursion into Gaza comes amid continuing effort to find a captured Israeli soldier. While Israel has conducted operations and air strikes throughout the Gaza strip since the soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, was captured, the new rules pave the way for an expanded ground presence.
The United Nations Security Council spent the day discussing a resolution condemning North Korea’s missile tests. The resolution, proposed by Japan, would condemn the tests and demand an end to future tests. Secretary of State Condoleza Rice and President Bush both pointed to the resolution as proof that it wasn’t just the U.S. that was annoyed by the fireworks.
France beat Portugal 1-0 and will now advance to the final against Italy.
