News of the Day: Late Edition
Speculation over North Korea’s missile intentions continues. Bush administration officials now say that North Korea has finished fueling a test missile. AP reports that the missile has a launch window of one month, while earlier reports had suggested that a fully fueled missile must be launched in 48 hours. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today that a missile launch would be seen as a “provocative act.”
In other Axis of Evil news, President Bush said that Iran will face tougher sanctions if Tehran does not agree to rejoin negotiations and halt uranium enrichment.
Across the border in Iraq, three members of the 101st Airborne Division have been charged with murder for the killing of three Iraqi men on May 9.
Sudanese militants have crossed the border into eastern Chad. The Sudan Liberation Army is training new recruits, amongst much distrust of the Sudan government and the janjaweed paramilitary forces.
The National Guard may return to patrolling the still ravaged city of New Orleans. Mayor Ray Nagin asked Louisiana’s governor to dispatch 300 troops after five teenagers died in a gun battle and a man was stabbed to death in an argument over beer this weekend. The city may also reinstitute a late night curfew for young persons.
South Dakota’s Secretary of State ruled that abortion rights supporters gathered enough signatures to force a vote on their ballot initiative to repeal the state’s ban on abortion.
The S&P 500 is back to where it was at the beginning of the year. Fear of an interest rate hike pushed stocks lower today.
