Some Excellent News

user-pic

This morning's announcement that Zarqawi is dead is, in the words of Joe Biden, "really, really, really, really (yes, four reallys) good news." He is right. This is good for the Iraqis most importantly, as evidenced by the spontaneous applause erupting from the Iraqi press at the announcement this morning (similar to the reaction to Bremer's announcement that Hussein had been captured.)

What now?

The fact that Zarqawi's group has also announced it on their website suggests that they are much more organized than the man himself. This is a significant interruption, but not a disruption.

I would also suspect that bin Laden will show his face/speak his voice relatively soon. He and Zarqawi had been long competitors as well, alternating between embracing each other and distancing themselves from each other. Their greatest rift was over the killing of Muslims, Indeed, Zarqawi's support outside Iraq had been seriously eroding; In Jordan, for example, his support had decreased exponentially after the wedding bombings there. What is interesting about those polls (however suspect) is that bin laden's never took a hit. Bin Laden's most recent audiotape again announced his prohibition against kiling Muslims, and that political saviness has always been the centerpiece of distinguishing himself from Zarqawi.

Thus, outside Iraq, it is simply unclear what Zarqawi's death means. The interrupted cells in Europe and Canada almost never have any ties to Zarqawi, and are often moved by bin Laden instead.

There will also likely be an upsurge of violence today and this week in Iraq in resopnse, simply to prove relevance after Zarqawi's death. Tony Blair's press conference today made the capturing entirely personal; I fear Bush will do the same. This is good for the Iraqis, but may have limited consequences for us.

PARDON ME!!! As one who prides himself in being a moderate. One never drifts to far left, or right. Hearing todays press conference with one who has lost all creditabilty, leaves me leary. The death, cabinet appointments. severa; days after orange count just leaves me leary. I wait awhile to see how all plays out.

Good, now we can get back to what's really important for America: the gay marriage amendment, flag burning, and cutting the estate tax!

Did we ever find out for sure how many legs he had?

At long last, a good day for President Bush, maybe a good week on balance. The Gay Marriage amendment failure in the long run won't make much difference either way; but he can say - again - "Lord knows, I tried.")

Comparing the Pentagon video of the air strike to a clip of the bomb site where Zarqawi was hiding posted by MSNBC, I found very little resemblance between the two. Also, for having 1000 pounds of explosives dropped on his head from a relatively high altitude, Zarqawi's facial features seem remarkably intact...I have a suspicion that we're not getting an accurate portrayal of what happened here.

I'm sure we'll find out once we see how Bush mounts Zarqawi's body on his wall, right next to Saddam's pistol.

Facial features really aren't sufficient to judge cause of death. Explosions, whether accidental or deliberate, by definition have extremely high speed pressure waves. High pressure air coming in though the nose or mouth can cause massive lung, and potentially heart, injury. Pressure waves also are associated with brain injury.

I'm not trying to go through the pathology of blast injury, but external views alone, especially of just part of the body, aren't enough. He might have been partially buried under enough weight that he couldn't breathe. There could be traumatic amputations not shown. What is really needed is an autopsy report.

I didn't see the visuals of the explosions and aftermath, so can't comment.

Any truth to the claim Zarqawi was killed with 3 #2 men?

hcberkowitz is correct. Many people who die of blunt force trauma die from internal injuries and believe it or not they don't appear injured. I've seen many who've died this way who literally didn't have a scratch on them when I looked at the body.

He had four cloven hooves.

Did he also chew the cud?
