News of the Day: Morning Edition
Republican Brian Bilbray won the special election to replace Duke Cunningham in California’s 50th District. Bilbray defeated Democrat Francine Busby by a tally of 49 to 45 percent, with 97 percent of votes counted.
The Senate voted down the Federal Marriage Amendment this morning, as expected, 11 votes short of moving the amendment to a final vote.
Fourteen European countries helped the CIA to capture, transport or hold terror suspects at clandestine prisons in the past five years, according to an investigation by Council of Europe officials. Poland’s Prime Minister has denied the accusations.
Iran’s state news agency reports comments from the country’s foreign minister: “Over the nuclear issue, we prefer cooperation to confrontation.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki directed the release of 600 prisoners across the country today. Yesterday he promised that about 2,500 prisoners would be released over the next few days to promote “national reconciliation.”
Harvard researchers plan on cloning embryos to create stem cells identical to those of living humans. No word yet on possible research into human-animal hybrids.
