Thousands of immigrants are expected to turn out today to show support for the estimated 12 million people living illegally in the U.S. The rallies, which will draw people away from their jobs and schools, hope to show how necessary the work of illegal immigrants is to the country’s economy. President Bush, who opposes the rally, has voiced support in recent weeks for a Senate bill that would improve border security but also put some illegal immigrants on the path to citizenship.
After Sudanese rebel groups failed to reach a peace agreement with the government on Sunday, the deadline has been extended 48 hours more at the request of the U.S. The talks are aimed at stopping the violence that has killed at least 200,000 people in the Darfur region of Sudan since 2003.
Police in India-controlled Kashmir say that Islamic militants have killed 35 Hindus in two separate attacks, coming just two days before a meeting between moderate separatists and India’s Prime Minister. This is the worst violence Kashmir has seen since India signed a peace agreement with Pakistan.
Maoist rebels in Nepal have said that they would respect the results of a public election if it were “free and fair.” Little over a week since violent protests caused Nepal’s king to reinstate parliament, democratic political leaders are hoping to hold assembly elections soon, but no date has been set.
