A dam along the Danube that burst from heavy flood waters has forced 1,500 people to evacuate their homes in southern Romania. In the past few weeks, thousands of acres of land have been flooded. Heavy rainfall and melting snow have caused the river to surge to record levels.
Diplomats in Kathmandu are negotiating a compromise between Nepal’s king and the political parties which have been staging nearly a month of protests, some of which have ended in violence from police. The parties had been organizing a major rally in the capital on Tuesday. Last week a diplomat from India visited the king to discuss a solution to the country’s ongoing political disputes.
Egyptian police have assaulted a protesting judge and detained 15 others. The judges were part of a group of 50 demonstrating against the government prosecution of two colleagues who made inquiries into possible election fraud in 2005. The judges are demanding a law to protect them from government pressure.
