Graduate Studies at Abu Ghraib

user-pic

See the article in today’s New York Times  on Abu Ghraib as “a breeding ground for extremist leaders and a school for terrorist foot soldiers”, or in a direct quote from an American commander, “a graduate-level training ground for the insurgency.”

So another Bush administration negative twofer: trampling American principles in the name of security, yet damaging security and interests as well.

Why? Because it seems we still don't get it.  We're lost in a cartoon land of Islamophobia. Let me explain.

Much has been made, and without any effort from the Congress or the "loyal opposition", leaks and memoirs have confirmed the truth that Bush lied us into war. But have they?

I don't think so. Not yet.  You see the Big Unspoken lie is that Bush played upon and stoked American Islamophobia..that is what was behind all those lies about WMD, Al Qaeda, "they hate our values', the Central Front in the WOT, the Myth of the Caliphate, and persists even today in the war and fearmongering campaign against Iran.

No we still don't get it. It isn't about cartoons.

The Arabs - they get it. Even if most Americans, including regretably most members of the Democratic Party's Stragetic Class do not or ever will..they get it

They get it..the lies about Iraq; the lies about Palestine, and lie that the US is an honest broker in the search for peace in the Middle East.

Americans will get it soon I think, but by then it will be too late

Islamophobia??  Have you been watching what these islamists have been doing over the past couple of weeks?  We don't have a "phobia," we have a legitimate fear.  You're right, it's not about cartoons - these animals are real - I'm afraid they're not just caricatures.

No question but that Abu Ghraid War College and Recruiting Center is a valuable asset, but the insurgency continues to strengthen across the board, outside the walls.

Contrary to the saccharine musings of a  dwindling few diehards like Will Marshall at the DLC (don't worry Alice - Iraq's like we were in 1776), failure hasn't been an option in Iraq for quite some time.

National Strategy for Victory in Iraq - Progress Rept

International Crisis Group - Insurgency Consolidating

Key Findings:

  • The insurgency increasingly is dominated by a few large groups with sophisticated communications.
  • There has been gradual convergence around more unified practices and discourse, and predominantly Sunni Arab identity.
  • Despite recurring contrary reports, there is little sign of willingness by any significant insurgent element to join the political process or negotiate with the U.S.
  • The groups appear acutely aware of public opinion and increasingly mindful of their image.
  • The insurgents have yet to put forward a clear political program or long-term vision for Iraq.
  • The insurgency is increasingly optimistic about victory.

Even if ToonTown USA doesn't, the Iraqis "get it" and as far as the United States is concerned, all other views are wholly immaterial. That folks is what our leaders and their enablers never seem to be quite able to understand - the country we invaded and now occupy against the will of the Iraqi  people

Iraq calls on US to hand over detainees

Iraq's human rights minister called on U.S.-led forces on Thursday to hand over all Iraqi inmates at U.S.-run prisons to the Iraqi government, a day after more damaging images of prisoner abuse emerged.

"We are very worried about the Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib," Zuhair al-Chalabi told Reuters. "The multinational forces and the British forces should hand them over to the (Iraqi) government."

"This is a very dangerous issue that the Iraqi government should review," said Chalabi, who was nominated as minister last year but whose appointment has not been ratified as the parliament elected in December has not yet convened.

"The Iraqi government should move immediately to have the prisons and the prisoners delivered to the ministry of justice."

Government Urges Calm

Is it possible, that the responsibility for the sadistic sexual torture went higher than Petty Officer Charles Graner and that part-time Reserve female General?

Abu Ghraib is still talked about because that was when the US lost the 'hearts and minds' in Iraq. Spreading 'freedom' might mean increasing the voltage on your genitals. The fact that Bush/Cheney tried to kill the McCain amendment, then re-wrote the Army field manual and kept portions classified, and then said they can ignore Congress on the issue leads many to believe they will continue to torture. Closing GITMO and firing Rumsfeld/Gen. Miller would be a start to turn around this PR disaster, but it will never happen with Bush/Cheney in charge. Americans on the ground in Iraq will continue to pay the price for these crimes. The Islamic world, and the world at large, will likely always associate the Iraq war, Bush, and America with these images of human degradation and torture.
