You know the drill. Cancel subscriptions, stop buying at the news stands don't click on the links. It seems to work, I watched some of Russert's interview with Sen. Frist and he actually asked some tough questions. Missed a couple of follow ups but way better than Tweety.

I agree that this is common media problem.  And that this instance is laziness. I'd prefer she'd done the work to say "Democrats pointed to the fact that...."  But I don't think this particular instance is quite as bad as the whole Abramoff/Democrats/Couric/Ombusdman thing, which was heinous. Here the Democrats and Republicans don't cancel each other out, instead they're additive.  Democrats cite evidence of insincerity and Republicans question practicality. Now, if there was more of a he said/she said like "Democrats said Mr. Bush had opposed... Republicans said Democrats are just like the people we picked on in high school and George Bush smells good." It would be another thing. 

Listen, buddy.  Not my job to stand as a filter between the people talking to me and the people listening to me.".  

Peter Dauo did a great piece the other day on the filter, and how it favors Republicans:

It's simple: if your core values and beliefs and positions, no matter how reasonable, how mainstream, how correct, how ethical, are filtered to the public through the lens of a media that has inoculated the public against your message, and if the media is the public's primary source of information, then NOTHING you say is going to break through and change that dynamic. Which explains, in large measure, the Dems' sorry electoral failures.

Get real Todd.  It is actually an excellent article.

When I read that article it seemed like a devastating attack on Bush's attempt at a nice platitude.  Yes gasoline usage equal to 75% of mideast imports WILL be cut, not through any actions of the Bush administration, but just because oil is expensive these days.  You'll see.

But "spurious press balance"?  Read it again.   The paragraph says that Bush was attacted from all sides for his remarks.  There is no hint of balance there.

Maybe she should have said "Democrats pointed out ..." instead of "Democrats said ..."  But, no big deal.

I agree. She should have written that Democrats "pointed out" or "noted" rather than that they "said." At least she didn't write that they "claimed" Bush did it.

I don't tend to think this particular instance demonstrates bias. It demonstrates, rather, that the reporter was writing on deadline and without sufficient resources to check the statement.

However, the Times of all news organizations should have news editors and copy editors who could check this kind of thing in a flash once the story is filed. I'll give any news outfit a break if it happens occasionally, which is why I think Mr. Gitlin is right in the general sense, if not the specific.

Even Woodward isn't like Woodward and Bernstein any more.
