Corruption=gay marriage

user-pic

This morning I got an e-mail from Tim McFeely, who runs a fine organization, The Center for Policy Alternatives. I've asked his permission to quote it in full

In his meandering, theme-less State of the Union Address last night, near the conclusion Bush declared:

They [the American people] are concerned about unethical conduct by public officials and discouraged by activist courts that try to redefine marriage.

In 8 seconds, the president dismissed the corruption scandals gripping Congress and his Administration and equated these in the American mind with judges who have applied state constitutional precepts on equality to lesbian and gay couples.

The reaction? Applause from both sides of the proverbial aisle - Democrats want to underscore the unethical conduct reference and Republicans want to take another swing at scapegoating homosexuals for the moral decline of America.

It's yet another example of the way conservative wordsmiths "frame" and mischaracterize events and issues. This simple sentence conjoins public officials who pervert their duties by accepting bribes from the Abramoff crowd with state judges who see unlawful discrimination in denying marriage rights to same-sex couples. Corrupt congressmen and courageous jurists are framed in the same photo and filed under "bad characters" that Americans don't like. Instead of seeing the real photo of Abramoff gripping Bush, we get a contrived portrait of Randy Cunningham hugging Margaret Marshall (now that's a mind-bender!)

What's the answer? At a minimum media commentators need to WAKE UP and deconstruct these faulty frames. And all of us need to watch our backs and fight back every time this word-poison is injected into the public discourse.

I think this statement is a masterful piece of work.  The president and his speechwriters know that of the two items mentioned in that sentence, the gay marriage thing is going to resonate more strongly with the average joe six pack than the corruption.  It was the last item mentioned and it inflames peoples passions more.  Now, if the dems could learn to do the same thing!

"What's the answer? At a minimum media commentators need to WAKE UP and deconstruct these faulty frames. And all of us need to watch our backs and fight back every time this word-poison is injected into the public discourse."

Really?  That's the answer?  Demand that Russert, Matthews, et al, deconstruct the republican frame for us?

I thought that was the job of the loyal opposition.  Instead we get "we're so bipartisan in Virginia, you can't tell us apart" from Tim Kaine as the Dem spokesmodel.

Fight back?  Of course!  But against who?  On what battlefield?

I think I would rather try to improve the education level in the USA to the point where people's critical thinking skills are sharp enough to pick up on word games like that sentence in bold. That would seem to be better than adapting sleazy, unethical, Orwellian word games to con people.

As this post has done we need to constantly point out this con game that the Republican wordsmiths are using, and we need to demand the media point out these logical fallacies immediately. If the MSM would spend as much energy on that as they did on sabatoging Howard Dean with the "Dean Scream" we could make some inroads.

The battlefield is the media. Thousands of Republican activists deconstruct every line of every story in print and on the air and mobilize to kvetch to the editors and producers of news. We need to do the same, or continue to be beaten politically.

I keep thinking that the Dems need to steal this fear-mongering technique, but I can't think of any good hooks; the R's have all the bases covered: gay-marriage, gun rights, taking religion out of schools and public institutions, abortion, porn, racism, xenophobia, lack of patriotism, flag-burning, higher taxes...

I can't come up with anything that they aren't already accusing the Democrats of to use against them!

Fight back?  Of course!  But against who?  On what battlefield?

Fight back against Tim Kaine, and all those other nasty centrist Democrats who win elections.  Purge them.  Then you can get down to the serious business of fighting the Republicans, but first things have to come first.  Think of the battles you can fight with 20 state houses and 35 senators!  Fighting Dems forever!

This is the great issue:  Defining words and phrases in such a way as to excite and provoke people in a constructive way...  teaching and re-teaching that often overlooked chapter in your Freshman English handbook on logic and rhetorical fallacies.
I am particularly taken by the wingers' use of "activist" and "agenda" as if they owned such words.  Why cannot a Democrat turn the tables and, through repeated and constant use, grind down and thus make useless any wrongful proprietorship of these and other ordinary expressions?  And what about catch phrases?
Where are the Roosevelts and Trumans and Churchills of our time?
My first thought was that "redefining marriage" referred to those who want a constitutional amendment doing just that.

More seriously, that thought did indeed come to me, but this discussion indicates how thoroughly everyone has imbibed the Bush frames.

It's also seemed to me that "activist judges" are those who would overthrow established law, like Roe v. Wade and deny women the right to control their own body. Activist judges are those who ignore the concerns of the framers of the Constitution that the Executive would be tempted to seize too much power.

We haven't heard much about "strict interpretation" of the Constitution lately. Maybe that's because there's no way the interpretations of John Yoo and Alberto Gonzales could stand that test.

Creativity, creativity! Turn their words against them!

Quick point - it doesn't work without the complicity of the media. If the media would mock or even simply point out the illogicality of the statement it loses its effect. The problem is the media, not that Dems aren't creative enough about coming up with this stuff. People who attribute to Bush and the GOP machine out of native creativity all the power that flows to them from media tilt are grossly misstating the actual state of affairs.

Thousands of Republican activists deconstruct every line of every story in print and on the air and mobilize to kvetch to the editors and producers of news. We need to do the same, or continue to be beaten politically.

Unfortunately, it won't happen as long as the regulating public airwaves is contrary to the private interests that dominate the means of communication.

We need legislators who will take public service seriously.  Urge your represtentives and congressional candidates to support the
Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005 (H.R. 3302).

I was about to post about Bush's ingenious equation of Gay Marriage and the Abramoff Scandal.  This is a technique that Bush and Republicans do with relative degrees of subtly and skill.

Democrats should vigorously, it would be nice if they do anything with vigor, is not allow the two issues to be linked.  It is possible to say that whatever one thinks about Gay Marriage and who should decide the issue it has nothing to do with Republicans taking and soliciting brides that corrupt all government.

For those of you who missed it, here are:
"The Top 10 State of the Union Highlights."

I think the immediate way to address this is to start creating grassroots media policing groups and make it easy for people to flood outlets with angry, yet effectively crafted messages to counter bias. I am starting to work on this in the Bay Area - if people are aware of anyone doing this already, especially in my area here, I would appreciate getting information about that.

As a physician I spend a good part of many days rounding in the hospital.  Invariably, when I enter a patient's room, I glance up at the ever present TV screen.  The channel is usually FOX and the talking head is frequently some Right leaning pundit or (more than likely) a Right leaning "reporter", discussing some aspect of something with a built-in conservative bias.  People believe that they are getting factual information and not propaganda watching this stuff.  Until there exists a media outlet as pervasive and accessible as FOX that offers a different viewpoint, the battle is lost, I'm afraid.

You seem oddly happy about our party's current predicament--I take it that you're more of a Republican-lite Dem? Hopefully, someday, we'll have a centrist party, so you can vote for it...

What?  This post seems like it was written by one of those "legalize marijuana" Dems, who has been over-zealously exercising his rights before they've been granted.

Go Mark. The sentence was sneaky and appalling; lies, damn lies, and faulty parallel constructions.

The only good news: few people pay much attention to the state of the union speech.

EJ

Come on now, it can't be "a fundemental misunderstanding of Gore's point" when I spot it, and "sleazy, unethical, Orwellian word games to con people" when y'all do. (well I guess it can, cuz it happens every time, but I'm gonna continue to point out your hypocracy every time as well).

Instead we get "we're so bipartisan in Virginia, you can't tell us apart" from Tim Kaine as the Dem spokesmodel.

Dude, is that who that was, I thought it was the "Romulin ambasidore" from Star trek: Deep Space Nine, what was up with the eye brow?

I can't come up with anything that they aren't already accusing the Democrats of to use against them!

They haven't been accused of fighting terrorism lately. Oh and that thing y'all keep saying about Republicans sneeking up behind you at the library...that might work...

Until there exists a media outlet as pervasive and accessible as FOX that offers a different viewpoint, the battle is lost, I'm afraid.

Good thing you're a Doctor cuz I almost had a stroke when I read this. Uh... let's see, "...a media outlet as pervasive and accessible as FOX that offers a different viewpoint..." how about ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, PBS, BBC, Al-Jezira...

Bush is doing a great job of wasting money and lives in Iraq, while doing a piss-poor job of improving security in the US. See the 9/11 commission Report.

While you're at it, try to point out "hypocrisy" also.

Another brilliant comment, right to the point of nothing. Keep it up - the GOP might nominate you for President.

Most Republican politicians are really, really awful - see today's budget vote. Most Dem politicians are anywhere from really awful to pretty good.

While you're at it, try to point out "hypocrisy" also.

You gonna run a spell check on all of my posts, or attept to refute the point? (hint: the spell check would probably be easier)

Oh, I think "attept"ing to refute your logic, which is right up there with your spelling, would be easy, but I'd rather not waste any more time.

Oh, I think "attept"ing to refute your logic, which is right up there with your spelling, would be easy, but I'd rather not waste any more time.

You obviously had enough time to point out the errors, so you "chose" not to address the subject, now if you were a Red-stater, you'd be instantly attacked as a troll. Instead you'll get a 4 rating and a pat on the back, your double standards remain in tact.
They haven't been accused of fighting terrorism lately. Oh and that thing y'all keep saying about Republicans sneeking up behind you at the library...that might work...

Who's in charge, anyway?  If terrorism is not being competently dealt with, then we must hold those in charge responsible.  At last count, Republicans hold the White House and Congressional majorities.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a Democrat in the White House who prosecuted the perpetrators of the '93 World Trade Center bombing, prevented the Millennium attacks on the Holland Tunnel and the Seattle Space Needle, and knew how to sustain the alliances to execute regime change and nation building in Eastern Europe.

How long can "the grownups" keep blaming others for everything that goes wrong, and take credit for what little goes right?

How long can "the grownups" keep blaming others for everything that goes wrong, and take credit for what little goes right?

Dude, I didn't blame anyone for anything. The guy asked "what haven't the Republican's accused the Democrats of doing?" I said "Fighting terrorism" was I wrong?

Hey, I thought you didn't have the time to respond to any of my comments anymore.

Most Republican politicians are really, really awful - see today's budget vote. Most Dem politicians are anywhere from really awful to pretty good.

You almost had me contemplating a prty switch, if you had said Republicans are really, really, really awful- you may have had me...of if the Democrats were swell, that might have done it too. With learned political insight like that I can see how you wouldn't have the time to consider your own duplicity.
