Unexpected Benefits

One of feminism's less-heralded achievements is that sexual harrassment law may not only provide an increased measure of equality in the workplace, but also offer the New York Knicks a much-needed pretext for firing the egregious Isiah Thomas. Just saying.

oh, you mean the guy who dominated the draft last year (3 picks, 3 guys in the top 10 of rookies), the guy who got stephon marbury (whose value has been demonstrated in the last few games they had to play without him) for basically nothing, the guy who got one of the 5 or so bonafide centers in the league, and the guy who convinced the best coach in the league to come to one of its worst teams?

oh yeah but he signed jerome james to a contract that was probably a little too big, what an idiot, right?!?!

Hey, Matt,

We already have Katie O'Beirne around to ridicule feminism. Don't feel you have to join in belittling the idea that women are people too. It's already covered.

Maybe I just read this at the wrong time, but let me just say, this cute little post really pissed me off. I don't find sexual harassment funny.

I suspect Matt was thinking of the guy with the highest payroll and the 3rd worst record in the league, who's never seen a lemon he didn't want to pay top dollar for.  Marbury (6th highest paid player in the league) and James ($5 m. for that?) and Hardaway (13th) and Davis (20th) -- Lord, Lord, Lord.

errr...he inherited the biggest payroll in the league.

hardaway and davis are both coming off the cap after this year, making them tremendously valuable commodities.

marbury isnt the 6th best player in the league, but he's Top 20, so if you're paying a little more than he's worth...well, thats the NBA man.

also, it seems from your post like you think he signed all those guys. the only guy of those who he signed was James. Frankly, $5 m isn't that much, and this was before they had Curry. If they don't end up getting Curry, it's not a terrible signing.

I don't find it funny either -- fire the scumbag!

I've no real response of any kind to this post, but it does seem a bit more yglesias.typepad.com than yglesias.tpmcafe.com, IMHO

marbury isnt the 6th best player in the league, but he's Top 20

Is that a joke? You really can't think of twenty players you'd rather have than Starbury? Even without factoring in salary? Wow. Nice to meet you, Mr. Thomas.

marbury isnt the 6th best player in the league, but he's Top 20, so if you're paying a little more than he's worth...well, thats the NBA man.

Marbury is terrible by any objective measure and, frankly, I'm embarassed for you that you're defending Isiah Thomas.  Will you still be defending him next year, when the Knicks hand their unprotected first round pick to the Bulls as part of the Eddie Curry deal (followed by their 2009 #1 to the Jazz for the pathetic Marbury)?  Indeed, the Knicks have the third worst losing percentage in the league and 2007 is billed to be one of the deepest drafts in history.  I'm sure the Bulls are enjoying their struggles.  As for Curry?  Well, he's got a heart condition.  Good thing those aren't chronic, huh?

Look at your roster, man.  Isiah has decimated the organization.  It will be years and years and years before you recover from his bumbling...
