One More Look at the Washington Post Clown Show...

user-pic

Ah. "Directed" campaign contributions. If I didn't have a sick sense of humor, I wouldn't be so amused by this:

Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell, January 22, 2006: "I should have said [that Jack Abramoff] directed his client Indian tribes to make campaign contributions to members of Congress from both parties.... [T]here is no doubt about the campaign contributions that were directed to lawmakers of both parties..."

And washingtonpost.com honcho Jim Brady, January 20, 2006: "Well, they... they objected originally to the fact that [Deborah Howell]... that when she stated it, she made it seem as if [Abramoff] personally was donating to Democrats. But what she meant to say was that he was directing [his clients to give] money to Democrats, which as I said, is beyond any kind of argument..."

Versus:

Washington Post reporter Susan Schimdt, February 22, 2004: "Under Abramoff's guidance, the four tribes -- Michigan's Saginaw Chippewas, the Agua Caliente of California, the Mississippi Choctaws and the Louisiana Coushattas... have loosened their traditional ties to the Democratic Party, giving Republicans two-thirds of the $2.9 million they have donated to federal candidates since 2001, records show..."

And the late David Rosenbaum, New York Times reporter, April 3, 2002, page A1: "Mr. Abramoff says he represents only those [clients] who stand for conservative principles.... ''All of my political work,'' he said, ''is driven by philosophical interests, not by a desire to gain wealth.''... Mr. Abramoff's background and personality hardly fit the mold of the typical Washington lobbyist.... Most unusual, [Abramoff] is, by his own description, a committed ideologue.... tries hard to persuade his fellow Washington lobbyists to give more generously to the Republican Party, its candidates and conservative organizations. He expects to raise as much as $5 million this year, he said, and plans to donate as much as $250,000 personally. Mr. Abramoff's rising influence is also illustrative of... [how] success can be built on a strong relationship between a lobbyist and a single, powerful lawmaker... Mr. DeLay..."

Which group of people do you think we should believe?

It sure doesn't sound like either Susan Schmidt or David Rosenbaum agree with Deborah Howell's and Jim Brady's claim--their "beyond argument" claim--that Abramoff directed his client Indian tribes to make campaign contributions to Democrats, does it?

Brady's and Howell's claim is not the conclusion that anyone but a right-wing loony would get from Susan Schmidt's and David Rosenbaum's articles, is it?

"[L]oosening their traditional ties to the Democratic Party," "persuade... to give more generously to the Republican party"--you couldn't say those things about a lobbyist who is "directing" his clients to contribute to members from both political parties, could you?

Of Howell's and Brady's use of the word "directed," all one can do is quote the old line from the movie The Princess Bride: "I do not think that word means what you think it means..."

Brad-

I feel your pain and share that same sick humor.  I also know that there are probably many reporters at WaPo and the NYT that are feeling pretty bad about what has happened to the credibility of the fourth estate in general, and their respective institutions.

But the only way to fight the nonsense is to convince these institutions that it is not in the interest of the bottom line to lie to readers.

In this new day, with corruption rife in the halls of government and DC, these rags will only be put right if they can be shown it is economically damaging to be an outlet for BushCo spin.  The coveted "access" for which it seems they have sold their souls will not save them from a storm of advertisers whose services and goods are being boycotted.

Want to help put the WaPo back on track?  Pick the top ten ads from the Sunday paper and write a letter or an email to those businesses.  Tell them you will not buy or click till the WaPo begins to tell the truth.

I'm not sure what the readership is here at the Cafe, but if 300 or 400 thousand messages to advertisers went out, there would be change.

I just wish we could channel Saul Alinsky and flush the crooks and liars out that way.....

Unfortunately, I think the owners of the big papers have enough capital, and enough incintive to use it to stay in favor with the adminstraion, to last through the next election (or two, three, four.) That's not to say that not buying a paper, and writing letters to their advertisers will not have some effect. I hope it has some effect. I don't buy nearly as many papers as i did five years ago, or even a year ago, and for the first time, I've written letters to advertisers. I'm sure if enough people boycott, a few crumbs will fall our way but I'm pretty sure the main course--the credibility of the big papers--will be gone before the crooks leave the table.

It appears to be the view of those who've followed Ms. Howell's past activities for Newhouse at the St. Paul Pioneer Press that her function is to expand a paper's suburbanite Republican readership.  There, she spoke for and published columnists who appeal to those who are most comfortable with the RNC's views.

Since no newspaper can regularly overlook the news of what the governing party is doing and since the governing party has displayed a good deal of corruption, incompetence, and favoritism, her goal is to reduce the cognitive dissonance which such reporting gives rise to among the desired readership.  After all, those made uncomfortable by the news are likely to cancel their subscriptions to the newspaper which is the source of their discomfort.

From the point of view of the managers of the Washington Post, I think it's fair to conclude she's doing the job for which she was hired.

I think we should just keep on them. Just what is the paper’s position on the whole ‘directed’ issue?  I just sent in a question to the K Street Confidential forum that will go on today at noon. The right wing has been doing this sort of thing for years. We need to flex our intellectual and economic muscle here. We need to let the mass media know there will be a price for printing spin as fact. There is something gong on here that can resonate beyond The Post.

Buy I'll say it again. The notion that this College Republican, this Republican Pioneer, this central player in the K-Street project "directs" money  to Democrats is like saying Susan Sarandon sends checks to Trent Lott.  Trying to make this a bipartisan scandal is shockingly laughable, and the Post's trying to do so is very troubling.

It's obvious from those facts that the Indian tribes previously gave more to the Democrats than they did under Abramoff, which indicates Abramoff in fact directed them against giving to Democrats. Historically the Indian tribes have given more to Democrats right?

Can we get a graph of Indian contributions, noting when the notorious Abramoff took over? I'd bet Indian giving to Democrats plunged, and skyrocketed to Republicans the moment he took over. Abramoff was a hardliner one party guy.

All these MSM goof balls ought to be ashamed. It's their job to either get the facts right, or STFU. Instead, it seems like every pundit in the media feels free to run their mouths, and they're mostly just repeating what they heard somebody else say. What a bunch of assholes.

We don't have many journalists any more. Instead we have a bunch of gossiping idiots who love to equivocate, rationalize, and generally talk out of their butts.

looks like a kidnappers ransom note created from cut out magazine text...Hardly persuasive...Yet she and Brady, from this "so-called evidence" make a blanket assertion about all Indian Tribe contributions to democrats being directed by Abramoff.

<img border="0" src="http://www.bartcopnation.com/dc/user_files/12140.jpg " alt="Howell's Supposedly Persuasive Evidence" title="Howell's Supposedly Persuasive Evidence">

Here's an important point that I haven't seen raised:

Howell claims the Post is in possesion of lists generated by Abramoff telling clients where to send contributions.

From Howell's youa-culpa:

The Post also has copies of lists sent to tribes by Abramoff with his personal directions on which members were to receive what amounts.

Which begs the question: if it proves Howell is correct, that Democrats did indeed get donations at the direction of Abramoff, why hasn't the Post published those lists?

Wouldn't this be the very first thing the Post would have done to deflect the criticism they've rightfully received over this issue?  And yet...Howell claims they have these lists - and we should just take her word for it.

This should be the next point where we apply pressure - if you've got em, show em. If you don't, issue a retraction.

Someone suggested boycotting the Post and contacting advertisers about our boycott.

The problem with this is the same as with boycotting oil companies. There are no nice oil companies, and the same goes for newspapers these days.

A second problem is that we really need the product. We're not going to go without news. What we'll always do in the end is buy the least obnoxious newspaper and read between the lines, as Russians did with Pravda.

A third problem I don't have enough information about to be sure of is finance. To the extent that publications are controlled by people or groups with larger financial interests, actual earnings from the newspaper might be secondary to the use of the paper to attain financially-beneficial political goals -- e.g. low taxes. (Recently Knight-Ridder, which performed well during the Second Gulf War, was bought out. What will this end up meaning?)

There is in fact a solution, which I've mentioned many times without much response. get a hundred million or so together and put together a new national newspaper. That would be money much better spent than the half-billion blown every four years on Presidential campaigns alone. (There have to be a lot of talented, demoralized reporters ready to jump the Times and the Post).

exactly right -- let's see the pattern of donations from, say, 1990 to now.  i'm guessing we see a big drop to dems not as soon as bush became president, but after abramoff moved in.  remember that he was on the transition team for the interior dept.  guess where the bureau of indian affairs lives?

The analogy with oil fails.  We need oil or other related energy products.  We don't need anything the Washington Post produces.  In fact, it's easier to get news online, and online news is usually more comprehensive than what one reads in the newspaper.

If the newspaper sucks, why buy it?

The real question is what did that money buy?

Abramoff's job was to maximize return on investment.  It may be that Democrats - seeing contributions decline - offered more...and Republicans - seeing contributions rise - also offered more.

Anyone but a left-wing looney can see that.

Rick, the news you get online usually comes from print sources such as the Post. Look at the bylines.

One thing that has come out in the long discussion of blogs and the internet is that the internet doesn't generate much news. Opinion, yes. Criticism, yes. But there aren't many full-time reporters who don't have a print outlet.

Regardless of whether we need the newspapers, they have a major influence on opinion which we can't afford to write off.
