Washington Post Ombudman Deborah Howell Says "Uncle!"
Ah. Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell says "Uncle."
Last week, her line on why Democrats aren't being heavily investigated in the Abramoff scandal was: "stay tuned." This week, her line on why Democrats aren't being heavily investigated in the Abramoff scandal is: "it's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal."
Deborah Howell, January 15, 2006:
Getting the Story on Jack Abramoff
: [Susan] Schmidt started checking Federal Election Commission records.... Schmidt quickly found that Abramoff was getting 10 to 20 times as much from Indian tribes as they had paid other lobbyists. And he had made substantial campaign contributions to both major parties. "It was enough to get me interested," Schmidt said.... Republicans... say The Post purposely hasn't nailed any Democrats [in the Abramoff scandal]. Several stories... have mentioned that a number of Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) and Sen. Byron Dorgan (N.D.), have gotten Abramoff campaign money. So far, Schmidt and Grimaldi say their reporting on the investigations hasn't put Democrats in the first tier of people being investigated. But stay tuned...
Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell, January 22, 2006:
The Firestorm Over My Column
: I wrote that [Abramoff] gave campaign money to both parties and their members of Congress. He didn't.... My mistake set off a firestorm. I heard that I was lying, that Democrats never got a penny of Abramoff-tainted money, that I was trying to say it was a bipartisan scandal, as some Republicans claim. I didn't say that. It's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal, and that's why the Republicans are scurrying around trying to enact lobbying reforms...
I would still like to know why Deborah Howell thinks various Indian tribes' contributions to Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev) and Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) are "Abramoff-tainted" or "Abramoff campaign money," rather than tribes' continuing to support legislators who have long been concerned with Indian affairs. And I would like to know how I was supposed to interpret last week's "stay tuned" other than as a claim that the Abramoff scandal is bipartisan scandal. As journalism, Howell's latest column is still of very low quality.
But that doesn't mean that we haven't gained a great deal of ground. Now we can all say that even Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell knows that the Abramoff scandal "is not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal." That's real progress.

While included scatological remarks are annoying (personally, I don't appreciate reading along and suddenly having the inage of an enema bag thrust upon my consciousness), I understand Ms. Howell's critics' rage.
She didn't just make a mistake. She let others (Howie boy, for example) excuse it. She made a disingenuous attempt to mollify the critics; she rationalized; she refused to admit the mistake. It wasn't the mistake which was so galling. It was the fact of an ombudsman/person acting against the concerns of the paper's readership, her own clients.
I don't think Ms. Howell gets it, yet.

Wait a sec... the one I read was from Bloomberg. Howell's is still crap.

Notice how casually she elides the real issue here:
I heard that I was lying, that...
The issue for those of us who follow the media is less a matter of people like Ms. Howell lying, and more a matter of people like Ms. Howell being lazy, incompetent, and intimidated by the right wing, hints of which are in the first blurb you quoted from. Even when you laid out simple facts before her Ms. Howell was too stupid and overwhelmed by her position to see that she was being stupid. Maybe the Post made her ombudsperson as a way of "kicking her upstairs" or something. But maybe they really looked at what they had to choose from and decided Ms. Howell was the most qualified person they had. And I'm supposed to worry about Iran?

And back to her little graphic: Here's a comment from one lukasiak on Ververs' Public Eye.
Mr. Ververs, neither you nor anyone else "knows" that Abramoff directed campaign funds to any Democrats. DIRECTED is the key word here.... the one document that has been cited by Howell says that the Coushatta tribe was supposed to give $2000 to Democrats Jean Carnahan and Max Cleland, and $5000 to Tom Daschle. The FEC filings show that Daschle received NOTHING, Carnahan recieved NOTHING, and Max Cleland got $500.
Meanwhile, every Republican incumbent running for re-election on the list got at least $1000....most got $2K or more, for a total of over $15,000 to GOP candidates.
In other words, the "graphic" cited by Howell would have you believe that Tom Daschle and Jean Carnahan got money from the Coushatta tribe in 2002 -- AND THAT IS NOT TRUE according to the FEC.
Explain to me how a document, supposedly demonstrating how campaign funds were directed to Democrats that is COMPLETELY at odds with the money actually contributed to the Democrats that are listed, fits with "what news organizations know."

Good for the blogs.
Are there issues on which the Democrats are almost as bad as the GOP?
Yep, but this ain't one of em.
Good good for the blogs.

I thought the Democrats were a terrorist related group, at least I heard it on MSM, Fox or somewhere.
Why would a God fearing ole' Republican Hitler youth and buddy of the greatest con-man in America, Karl Rove, be supporting flip-flopping Freedom Fries hating liberals?

Please, all I want to know is whether Abramoff slept in the Lincoln Bedroom. If he didn't, all the White House would have to do is say so. What do they have to hide?

No, it is who did he sleep with in the Lincoln Beedroom? You know they had this in thing with gay male prostitutes.....

You are letting the Post off much too easy. They are thoroughly discredited and clearly compromised. Anyone reading through the letters they took off the blog can see these letters were "intemperate" only in demanding an explanation or a retraction of Howell's "mistake",at least almost all. These are completely reasonable demands and any SERIOUS self-respecting news organization would be willing to either explain or retract. I know theNYTimes has done this in the past. And while I am not always happy with decisions made by the Times, they at least have an ombudsman who is responsive and thoughtful. What a contrast with the Fox-wannabees at the Post. The idea that a weasel like Howell is placed in an ombudsman position in the first place is a disgrace. First there was the earlier attack on Froomkin (disguised by Howell as unhappiness with the name of his column (too pathetic for comment)) and then further defended by John Harris (a poor excuse for an editor who apparently takes marching orders directly from the GOP (Patrick Ruffini)). But how pathetic is the idea of the editor of the post.com (one Jim Brady)going on a far-right talk show to bash readers? Or the self-image of this Howell making herself some hero in the midst of an UNJUSTIFIED firestorm by rabble. Judith Miller redux. I think all a serious reader can expect from the Post is more far-right trash.

If Howell were doing her job as ombudman, she'd have half the Post staff calling her names much worse than outraged readers, and the other half saying right on, for improving their reporting. As it stands, the Washington Post ombudsman views her role as chief apologist, and is more part of a mutual butt kissing clique with their reporters and editors.

Howell is not the impartial person you assume she is. While editor of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, she recast the paper as a conservative paper by bringing in well-known conservative activist D.J. Tice as an editorial writer, conservative Ron Clark as editorial-page editor and hateful nostalgia monkey James Lileks as a columnist. When she took over at Newhouse, she brought with Lileks and installed him as featured columnist.

The hiring of these ombudspeople at the Post, NY Times, NPR, it could not be more clear, was to address the accusation of liberal bias. And Howell and her ilk patently view their roles as to ride herd on a newsroom full of liberals. That's why they yawn or sneer when anyone points out a bad call that helps the Republicans.

I think it's quite difficult to foster and exercise open and critical enquiry and evaluation in just about any paid position, unless you make that a condition of your employment contract.

I hadn't realized she was that "Howell".Thanks NotJamesLileks for that information. You may know this better than I do, but how is the Saint Paul Pioneer Press doing with that hard right turn howell engineered. The reason I ask (full disclosure here) is that at that time I was a loyal subscriber to the Pioneer press, and then when they turned right and trained their eyes on the lucrative Republican suburbs (sound familiar to Washington Post readers? to MSNBC listeners?) I switched to the Star-Tribune. BUT I HAD THE IMPRESSION THIS RIGHT TURN WAS NOT PROFITABLE AT ALL. There is a moral in there somewhere.

Um! This is difficult for most of us. In DC though, I gather that you have to demonstrate some butt kissing, sleeping around, and towing the line, or you may find yourself getting kicked around, fired, eating alone, and gaining or losing a good deal of weight.
The good thing is you are bound to spend more time in a sober state.

Remember when the WaPo "broke" the story of Pvt. Jessica Lynch, her heroic gun battle against Iraqi captors and subsequent liberation by US troops? It was only after real investigative journalists at the BBC exposed it as a hoax that the editors were forced to admit the story was bogus and apologized.
This time bloggers have done the same thing --forced the Post to retract spin, bias and disinformation on behalf of the Republican Party Establisment. Shame on them...

Ms. Howell was too stupid and overwhelmed by her position to see that she was being stupid.
I simply can't credit that. The notion that a republican pioneer, a guy who had made his way up through the college republican wars to become an influential lobbyist would give to both parties doesn't pass the laugh test. The idea the K-Street project was something other than exactly what Tom Delay laid out--a demand that lobbyists be republicans if they wanted access--is something she doesn't understand is not viable.
She's in the tank. She's not being stupid, or ignorant or not getting it. She's in the tank. She would rather support a meme that lends "balance" than report the truth.
Her column today was an attempt to change the subject, to blame the Post's readers for her blatant disregard for honest reporting. As the ombudsman, this is especially egregious. Part of the job is dealing with over the top crap coming from wackos. Blaming them as her defense for dishonest reporting is a shuck, not a reply.January 22, 2006 9:34 AM | Reply | Permalink

Silly us. If only we understood what Deborah Howell's job description was, this controversy would go away.
It's our fault, because when we see the the title, "ombudsman", we fall into the trap of thinking that means advocate. In particular, reader advocate. What a bunch of doofuses we are. As the Washington Post makes clear, that is not her job. Here is how they describe it. "In that capacity, she promotes public understanding of the newspaper and journalism. She also writes a weekly column."
As you see, she is actually an advocate for the Post. And because journalism is, you know, really hard, it's also her job to explain it to us rubes.
Clearly, her column lives up to those standards. I know that after reading it, I understand that the Post is a worthless rag, and that journalism is pretty much FUBAR. So let's cut Debbie a break, OK?

Having read Howell carefully, I would say she said, "I'll spit in your eye!"
If people believe the crap she says, you would think Abramoff ran a non-partisan money orgy.
She makes Judy Miller seem capable.

Dear Ms. Howell,
I just read your article "The Firestorm Over My Column," and it is quite disheartening to see that you just don't get it.
I don't know much about you, other than the fact that you write for one of the country's leading newspapers, and that you wrote said firestorm-igniting column, but your background and history are simply not relevant to my opinion of the whole incident. If anything, your lengthy experience in the news business makes this incident less excusable.
By your own admission your wording was sloppy. Given the importance of your position, given the recent history of this country and the ignominious role that journalists have played in this history, given the well-known fact that the Republican strategy to deal with the Abramoff debacle hinges on convincing the public that the problem is a bipartisan one, given their proven ability to distort the printed record, given all this your gaffe was, at best, a case of incompetence so gross that I think that you do deserve to be fired.
But the fact that in your latest column you gloat over the immunity that your contract gives you makes one wonder whether you deserve the benefit of this most charitable interpretation of the facts, which makes it even clearer that dismissing you would be entirely justified.

Hmmm. Your argument makes a certain amount of sense. At the same time, I'd be careful about using too broad of a brush stroke. The rise in popularity of news media ombudspeople transcends partisan battles in the political sphere. This is a trend that has been growing for some time, and it is rooted in a variety of factors internal to the journalism profession.
Let me say it this way: In the journalism professional journals I read, I don't get the impression that the field views ombudspeople as primarily intended to rein in liberal newsrooms. Indeed, such a suggestion would be hotly decried in many quarters. A major reason is that "objectivity" is still a cherished ideal among many in the MSM.

Get Ms. Howell a job description. I wrote her a polite e-mail reminding her that she was the readers' advocate. She does not seemed to have grasped that, even yet. Her admitting a mistake/apology was grudging. As I told her, people are forgiving if you step up and say, "I was wrong; I am sorry."

If memory servies, WaPo and NYT instituted ombudsman offices after cases of made-up journalism (Catherine Cook (?) and Jason Blair, respectively).
I think Josh at TPM has it right: the lazy elite spineless media figure they (and their careers) are safe if they steer their reporting to the right.
Game's up, folks. Life just got more interesting for the "journalists."

I sent WaPo this:
When Deborah Howell blurred the lines between fact and spin, it was a forgivable sin. Just go get all of the documentation together, forgo any conclusion/spin, and set the record straight. Instead she resorted to the type of semantics 'tap-dance' and 'leaps of logic' that you were all over Clinton for, and his regress was of much less dire consequence to our Democracy. Then, when "We the People" have finally had enough, when a desire for the truth has finally outweighed even our own apathy, some rise up in justifiable anger...only to be shut down and labeled as "left-wing fanatics" or "liberals", as if the two were equivalent.
To this day I have yet to see any evidence that Abramoff contributed to, or directed contributions to, any Democrats. Prior to K street the tribes gave about equally to both parties, so their continued contributions to Democrats is hardly evidence of malfeasance. So where's your evidence? If anything, given the known practices of K street, I find it difficult to believe that Abramoff knowingly steered any money to Democrats.
It's time for WaPo to make a decision: Are you a member of the "Fourth Estate", an essential part of our Democracy that holds those in power accountable? Or are you just another business, seeking only the highest profitability and access to power, consequences be damned?
A troubled nation awaits your response.
Sincerely,

I agree with JayAckroyd entirely. It is ludicrous to think of this as a "mistake". This is a carefully orchestrated attempt to spread the politicaql fallout of the egregious scandal to Republicans and Dems alike. I have written so often of my low opinions of elected Dems that their corruption would not surprise me (or many people in the country). Nevertheless for a "newsperson" facts are supposed to matter; but not for the new Washington Post. But look at the history: a Republican inspired push by Howell and john Harris to rein in Froomkin. And Howell is not some unbiased newswoman. As pointed out above she was brought in by the Pioneer Press in the TwinCities to move the newspaper to the right a task she performed with relish. Now you do not get hired by WaPo with these credentials to be ombudsman if your job is not to be Commissar and help enforce the new GOP/Post line. She just is not so skillful.

I wished I believed you were right that she just doesn't "get it." Her story is a complete evasion. She gets it plenty. She doesn't want to talk about it.
The rightwing bs about the liberal bias of the press seems to be doing the job the right wants, creating a rightwing bias of even traditionally honest press.

The whole Washington-coverage octopus -- a few folks exepted (Thank You, Knight Ridder) practices journamalism the same way I did chemistry in high school.
Everyone remembers that the neatest, highest graded results were got on lab reports by drawing your curves before you plot your data. And you could really ring the bell by pulling the value in question out of the Standard Handbook. Then you knew it was the right number.
Once the line is drawn -- that Abramoff's leveraged buy-out of the congressional Republican party was actually a bi-partisan bribefest -- then it's easy to see where the data points have to go -- some Democrats just have to lie along that line, even if the experiment showed otherwise. So Howells goes and puts those points in, too.
When I did it in grade 10, I did it for a number of reasons -- I was lazy, my lab technique sucked, I wanted good grades for no real effort, all the other kids were doing it.
And none of those reasons reflected well on me.
But the Howells of the world can do to politics what I couldn't do to chemistry.
And the reasons are the same -- they are lazy, their lab technique sucks, they want good grades for no real effort, and all the other kids are doing it.
Which doesn't reflect any better of them.
I had the good sense not to become a chemist. Maybe some of these folks are in the wrong field, too.

And, see, by doing this, you find yourself in the obligatory positiion of pointing out, as a reasonable person, that there are also corrupt democrats. That's as may be. But this systematic looting of the treasury in return for graft is unprecedented in my lifetime. Sure Agnew took money, and gave out contracts. Yeah, Wright laundered bribes s through his vanity press. But the scale of this, the brazenness of this, and the complicity of the media is, for me, jaw-dropping.
They exploit, on purpose, both eyes open, the natural tendency of reasonable people to say "On the other hand..." Brad Delong recently said that he's angry at these people, because he is starting to sound like a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy nut. I'm down with that. It's hard to have conversations with people who aren't paying attention. I don't know what I'd do without John Sterwart--he is paying attention, and reassures me that I shouldn't be heading to a shrink and getting a librium prescription.
